This pretty much has to be the case for the variant to be spreading so rapidly there, given how large a fraction of the population has probably been infected before.

So I wonder what having both would mean? I had the virus last December and the vaccines in March. I have yet to decide if I will get a booster.

Most car accidents aren't serious. Your argument would suggest that attributing that fact to safety procedures would ignore it. It obviously doesn't. It's a nonsensical position. Safety procedures are there to help protect people from the serious accidents. Vaccines are there to help prevent serious infections.

Since the primary goal of the vaccines is to prevent serious illness and death, and since they probably still do that with Omicron, I hope everyone who is able to rushes to get shots that are very much related to what people are trying to avoid.

South Africa isn't a very highly vaccinated population, with 24.6% vaccinated. And yet, that's where omicron is spreading most widely:

The good news is that out of tens of thousands of omicron infections, they still haven't linked a single death to omicron. I'd say that's very encouraging news!

Cars in themselves are simply a means for getting from A to B. They are inherently dangerous. Just like diseases are inherently dangerous. So we need to add features to a car to make those dangers less likely to harm us. Most people never have cause to be thankful for the laws that make us wear seat belts (I still have scars from 40 years ago when they weren't compulsory and I was young and stupid). Or give thanks to the engineers who designed anti skid brakes, crumple zones, airbags etc.

So it is with your body. The basic model will generally be ok most of the time. But there's a lot of things in the environment that want to kill you. There's a lot in your own body that can go wrong. A tooth abcess will kill you. Even a scratch on the leg could kill you. So instead of engineers we have doctors. Who have designed drugs and vaccines, lotions and potions to help you live a lot longer. To help you when your body can't cope.

But feel free to rely on your own bodies defenses at all times. Just make sure that you have your affairs in order.

I didn't suggest it was. South Africa is, however, a country in which a large fraction of the population has already been infected with SARS-CoV-2, mostly the Beta and Delta variants.

What? There have only been a few hundred confirmed Omicron infections, almost all of which haven't been around long enough to cause death. There are almost certainly many more out there, but there's no reliable information about them. At this point, no one knows disease severity caused by Omicron, with or without prior immunity. If mortality is lower, that will be wonderful, but so far we haven't exactly been catching a lot of lucky breaks with this virus.

But does the vaccine protect against this new strain?

No one knows for certain -- or really at all. Vaccines (and prior infection) clearly do not provide a lot of protection against being infected with Omicron, although they might well provide some. The guess among immunologists is that vaccines and prior infection will both provide some protection against severe disease and death, although probably less protection than against earlier versions of the virus.

As I stated Covid can just as easily be spread by the vaccinated as the the unvaccinated. We have become aware that we have been vaccinated to keep us from having worse outcomes not to keep us from being infected. Once infected we can spread the virus the same as any unvaccinated person. That is why we are asked to mask. Not to protect ourselves but to protect others. Masks, other than N 95 and to a lesser degree surgical masks, are very poor at keeping the wearers from infection but somewhat more effective at keeping the infected that wear them from spreading their disease.

That says zero about the vaccinated being as likely to transmit. Which was your claim here.

They transmit enough to warrant masks. That's all we know from your evidence.

They transmit is all we need to know. I said the vaccinated could transmit as easily I did not say anything about likely to transmit. If a vaccinated person has Covid that person can spread it as easily as as a non-vaccinated person with Covid can spread it. How likely one spreads it whether
vaccinated or unvaccinated depends entirely upon where the person goes and what precautions the person takes after catching covid.

I got my second vaccination 7.5 months ago in April. I scheduled an appointment for a booster shot for Monday Dec. 6. They were booked about a week in advance. I am in my 60’s.

I am half that I have decided that given what they say about the new one out if a vaccine comes out for it I am not taking it. I am not taking a vaccine to prevent a cold ( which so far is what omicron seems to be.

Hospitalizations are increasing in South Africa where two types of COVID are spreading. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A booster is supposed to protect against severe disease. I made the booster appointment when they said it would take two weeks to learn the omicron virus parameters. The antibodies from the Moderna vaccine I got in April may have dissipated. Natural immunity from previous infection also dissipates.

I got the tetanus, polio, diphtheria vaccinations and the tine test as a child because my dad was in the USAF and we had orders to get vaccinated. There were no vaccine protests in the 60’s. No one was calling vaccines the mark of the beast as happened with the COVID vaccine.
