The mention of the flu is a God-send to any debate about Covid. Or to one side in that debate, anyway.

Certainly, there are differences between the flu and these viruses. But if we don't fight the issue out on the basis of a comparison of Covid to influenza, the questions surrounding Covid treatment come into view and are much less easily dismissed.

Let's see the Pelosi tweet about Trump expanding a travel ban from Africa was dated 31 January 2020.

Where was the coronavirus at the end of January 2020? (Short answer: not Africa.)

Would restricting travel from Africa at the end of January 2020 have any impact on US coronavirus infection rates? (Short answer: No.)

Was banning travel from Africa at the end of January 2020 xenophobic or racist? (Short answer: Perhaps, it certainly didn't advance public health protections against a virus mostly in China.)

Yes it is very useful.

* Covid is much more deadly than seasonal influenza. Seasonal influenza is also mostly dangerous to the very old and (less so) to the very young. Covid impacts the younger elderly and older middle age people pretty bad.

* Covid is much more infectious than influenza. Infected people are likely to transmit COVID to more people than those infected by influenza transmit the flu.

* Like Influenza, there have been winter outbreaks throughout the world when people spend more time indoors and their nasal passages are drier and more susceptible to infection if exposed to the virus. Unlike influenza, there have been AC waves of COVID in the hottest parts of the US each summer as people spend time indoors away from the heat and "back-to-school" waves each Fall.

* Influenza has many very different strains circulating at once. These strains are different enough to require different vaccines. (The "flu shot" is a mixture of these vaccines based on predictions of which strains will dominate each annual outbreak. They are sometimes surprised.) So far, the vaccine against the base version of COVID is fairly effective at preventing infections of all variants and quite effective at preventing the worst outcomes.

* The COVID vaccines are *much* more effective than the influenza vaccines, in part because of the various strains of influenza circulating each year.

So, yeah, let's compare it to the flu.

So you want to play this game again...

Without any adjustment for age (as your number has none), the typical death rate for influenza infections in the US is a little more than 1 death per 1000 infected persons. (Something like 1.2, or so, but the data isn't that precise.)

99.5% survivability is 0.5% fatality or 5 deaths per 1000 COVID infections. This is 4-5 times more deadly on a case-by-case basis than influenza.

Variants can be contained. By vaccination. To lessen transmission and bad outcomes (hospitalization, death, long COVID).

Variants can be prevented by stopping infections. If no one gets infected, no new mutations will occur.

[Approximately 0.1%, or 1 in 1000 of all Americans have already *died* of COVID. Certainly all of them have not been infected.]

My comparison with flu and the sars - cov - 2 virus was the fact that variants can’t be stopped anymore than flu virus variants can be, and to pretend otherwise is ludicrous.

Do we have travel bans to try to stop flu virus variants?

But since you want a direct comparison:

Unlike the flu, 80% of healthy adults can’t even tell they are infected with the SC-2 virus, the symptoms are that mild.

Unlike the flu, the SC-2 virus does not affect healthy children or kill them.

And the survivability rate is actually 99.75%, not 99.5% as I earlier stated.

And survivability rate for it when common sense early medical intervention is given using hydroxychloroquine wit( zinc is 100%, as shown by Dr. Zelenko in NY who treated 1500 COVID patients with zero hospitalization needed.

The SARS virus kills from severe lung inflammation due to the infamous ‘cytokine storm’, which is well known, but the.idiotic protocol doctors we4e told to follow, was to send infected people home with no treatment such as steroids to control lung inflammation- and wait until they can’t breath, and then go to the ER, and be put on a ventilator to die.

Today they are using remdemisvir which causes kidney failure and death from pulmonary edema after they go to the ER because they can’t breathe.

I know there has been talk of travel restrictions due to particularly nasty "pandemic flu" strains in the past. Like the bird flue or the H1N1. But these aren't as contagious as SARS-CoV-2.

Flu can be spread by migratory birds which on either side of this issue, we would agree it is impossible to stop. So how possible is it to produce a vaccine for 9 billion people?

I tend to believe it's like shuffling deck chairs on the unsinkable Titanic.
Yep! Like they cannot contain or cure the common cold.

Best of luck with that info there.

Repeating FoxNews latest outrage?

The tweet was from around Jan 2020. The ban that Biden is talking about was not about Covid.

Trump Administration Adds Six Countries to Travel Ban (Published 2020)
published Jan 30, 2020 and updated April 2021

The administration has argued that the ban, enacted in 2017 to restrict travel from Muslim-majority countries, is necessary to ensure that countries satisfy security requirements for travel into the United States, or face restrictions until they do.

The expansion of the restrictions, which already affected more than 135 million people in seven countries, is likely to hinder more than 12,300 potential immigrants in the next year from resettling, finding work or reuniting with their families in the United States. The effect on Nigeria, not only Africa’s most populous country but also its largest economy, could be particularly severe. The United States issued more than 7,920 immigrant visas to Nigerians in the 2018 fiscal year, the second-most of any African country......

But it also comes as the 2020 election heats up. Mr. Trump is expected to use his travel ban, as well as his efforts to cut refugee admissions, to rally his political base as his administration contends with a Senate impeachment trial. Some of the most vulnerable populations in the world had one door to the United States shut last fall when Mr. Trump lowered his cap on refugee admissions to 18,000, down from 30,000 in the year prior. The administration has also severely restricted the ability for migrants to obtain asylum at the southwest border.
That ban was intended to reduce immigration from countries that Trump used a profanity to describe. It was to please his base. It wasn't about Covid 19. It was about being Xenophobic.

In contrast, Biden enacted a ban after scientific concern over a new variant of Covid 19, omicron, which can kill people. It is about minimizing the spread of a variant identified in South Africa, as it may be worse than the Delta variant we are dealing with now.

There have been over 777,000 dead in the US of Covid 19 n the US since Jan. 2020.

Fox and the like fail to acknowledge all the facts.

It is a difference between bigotry toward Muslim/black countries and the concern about a new Covid variant and how it could hurt people in the US.

That’s the spin. It’s actually protecting from terrorists ant protecting from a virus.
