I'm curious about what true conviction feels like. Does the conviction grow over time in its strength? Is there a disdainful feeling of sin, like being disguted by it? I suspect so, but not sure. If so is this present immediately after repentance or does it evolve over time?

Pretty ghastly actually. If we didn't feel absolutely horrible we wouldn't take it seriously. It is the sense that our lives have gone horribly wrong and that we have to do something seriously to avoid total disaster. One response is to start crying out to God for mercy, because of the fear that one could slide down into hell at any moment. The other response is to neutralise the source of the conviction, even to the point of violently attacking the person responsible, such as what happened to Stephen.

If you are Born-Again, it feels like guilt, except with an invitation to get right.

I think it feels like "Truth", and somebody trying to be honest with you, and who is also trying to get you to be 100% honest with them, etc...

Or at least, that seems to have been part of my experience(s) with Him over time, etc...

So, you kind of have to know Truth, and the real truth, in the first place, etc, so you know what to accept as truth/Truth, and also what to reject as lies, etc...

Discerning of spirits to know the Holy Spirit, etc...

God Bless!

Good question. Primarily, the conviction of the Holy Spirit simply says that we are wrong. There is no great feeling with it. If we dwell on a sin, we may end up in condemnation, which is not from God (Romans 8:1).

Now if we are continually sinning the same thing over and over, it may well caused us to be disgusted. God's intent is that we should be free. So if we keep losing our temper with someone, we may feel bad about it. As long as it causes us to repent, it is a good thing. If we sink into despair, that is a bad thing.

Satan is the accuser of the brethren. The precious blood of Jesus cleanses sin away as if it never happened. If we confess our sin, that's it - forgiven and forgotten (1 John 1:9)

We need to know the power of the Lord Jesus within us to overcome sin. It may take some time to come to the place of victory. If you are struggling, don't despair. Victory is not far away. The fact that you care means that God can and will help you.

There can be physical manifestations in your body from ignoring a conviction or warning from the HS.And all He is wanting is for you to align with Him. Once you do the problem is gone, cravings can leave, addictions can leave even. Or illness. It starts with a hint or a warning though, don't ignore that because He could be warning you of coming danger. He doesn't exactly write us 6 page letters or text message, we are supposed to be able to discern stop means stop or do this instead means do it.

He will give us strength to do what is right and a sense of freedom when we agree and of if it's of His will. But a pit smack in the middle of your gut if you are wrong and proceed anyway on that wrong path.

That's my experience in brief.

Holy Spirit conviction brings the boldness, the confidence from a dedicated prayer life.
It is found in the asking and receiving. It is in knowing now what you did not know
before you asked.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

From this and and other posts I've read, I certainly am not experiencing the Holy Spirit.

I don't think there's a formula for how we are to recognize a bona-fide onset of conviction about sin. I suppose, too, that it's not only difficult enough these days for most of us to learn to come to terms with ethereal ideas we find in the New Testament; it's probably going to be even more difficult for those who suffer from sociopathy.

The best we can do on a practical level to gain "feeling" for conviction is to read the Bible, reflect upon its contents, get feedback from other Christians and pray for God's help day to day to become more sensitive to and more discerning of His leading. Other than these things, there's no absolute method by which to become convicted of sin.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
Intimacy with the Spirit can be found in HIS praying and our listening and watching.
Romans 8:
26
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray
for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot
be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
When groaning and sighing become spiritual...
Mark 7:34 Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him,
“Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
Mark 8:12 But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”

John 11:38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave,
and a stone lay against it.

Psalm 38:9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

Exodus 6:5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians
keep in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant.

How can you even say that without experiencing the Holy Spirit conviction in the first place? I mean, it seems to me that you're probably one of the most convicted of the bunch here and don't know it, even as those who are forgiven much love the Master more than those who are forgiven little. But it's wrong to not acknowledge the Holy Spirit because you'll then have no thankfulness for His correction and no love for Him. That's your problem right there. He's there, you just don't acknowledge Him in thankfulness.

So you were wrong in the past and the Holy Spirit showed you that through someone else. Welcome to the club. Don't beat yourself up over it, because that's self-centered. Be thankful He's in your life, because that's not self-centered. To let Him inside of us we must acknowledge that we're all sinners, and believe in the depth of Love that bears the sins of the world on the cross of Jesus. Since the Christ is the True Image of God sent by God for us to believe in and have Life, we must walk in that type of love for Him to live in us.

Yes I do. I feel terrible.
Ok, then the Holy Spirit is convicting you. Now the next step is , do you love Jesus Christ of Nazareth enough to repent, change your mind, from this sin. It's the natural process of santification.
