Luke 11:38 (NASB)

Jesus had not first ceremonially washed before the meal.

Wouldn't it be nice for once to thumb our nose at convention? There's a bit of radical in all of us. We all long to defy the status quo and change the world around us. For evangelism to be truly effective, there must be this element of confrontational radicalism in our preaching. In this scripture, we see the Lord Jesus, a pious Jew who kept the law, deliberately not ceremonially washing before a meal at the home of a prominent Pharisee. I'm inclined to believe that Christ deliberately set up this confrontation to rebuke and instruct the religious leaders gathered there (Luke 11:39-54). We have to confront the devil and the conventional ways of this world to advance the kingdom of God.

The word "radical" is badly overused, and in no place more so than in churches. It's an empty word, designed more to brag about one's own self-perceived zeal than anything else.

No Christian has any right to think of himself as radical; rather, let him echo the words of the servant from Jesus' story, the one who after he had done all his master told him to do said, "I'm an unprofitable servant."

No, you don't have to confront the devil. If you are preacher, you have one main job: preach the gospel of Christ who was crucified for ours sin, and preach the full council of the Word of God. Leave your self-perceived radicalness out of the equation, it'll just distract you, it'll make you think about yourself and how you think people see you, it'll make man's opinions of you more important than it should be.

It is only the last and wildest kind of courage that can stand on a tower before ten thousand people and tell them that twice two is four.

Chesterton, G. K. (Gilbert Keith). Heretics (p. 29). Kindle Edition.

Your job isn't to come up with new truths, or new twists on what you think are old and tired truths. The world doesn't need your radicalness, it needs Christ who died for our sins. Your job as a preacher is to tell them very self-evident truths, that they have broken God's laws and are sinners and even the works they think of a righteous are so badly soiled in sins that they are like used diapers. You have to tell them they can't save themselves. That is as plain as twice two is four, and it is the thing almost all of them will not want to hear.

Your lengthy post overlooks one thing, it's not our radicalism but the radicalism of Christ. The world doesn't need your misinterpretation.

To quote yourself, "Wouldn't it be nice for once to thumb our nose at convention? There's a bit of radical in all of us...We have to confront the devil and the conventional ways of this world to advance the kingdom of God." Don't hide your attempts to play at being "radical" by blaming it all on Christ.

The Bible doesn't tell us to "thumb our nose at convention"; if anything, it tells us to submit to authorities, to live at peace with everyone so much as it is within our power, to live quietly and work with our own hands. That there may well be times when we must stand against authorities is also taken into account, for "We must obey God rather than men", but that isn't some kind of license to rebellious nose-thumbing.

I'll say this one more time, radicalism isn't a call for violence or activism but yes, to indeed thumb our nose at legalism, pharisiasm and other conventions that Christ came to destroy to set us free. If you don't understand that aspect of grace, I have nothing further to say to you. You will find out on judgment day who the real Christians are, if you continue in faith that long. Don't pretend to be all knowing when you micharacterize and misrepresent people. You're no super Apostle and believers aren't as stupid as you think they are. Believers know that they have to pay taxes and submit to authorities. They don't need your lectures on that. This is about rebelling against authorities who defy God's word including but not limited to abortion, homosexuality and other perversions that they legalize which are not God's will and not for defying rule of law. Your stupidity is apalling. Believers know that they have to avoid fornication, drunkeness, lasciviousness and other sins. It's people like you who lecture others but are caught smoking pot the next day or with a prostitute. Don't pretend to be holier than others, because I can see you are full of sin and depravity. " You who preach about the law, do you break the law"? "You who preach against idolatry, do you rob temples"? You who call others to resist sin, are you captive to inappropriate contentography, substance abuse, gambling, drunkeness and other sinful habits? Do people like you go out with women 20 years older than them? You don't even know what's in your mind, let alone other people's mind. I'll quote the Apostle Paul, "I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself". Your behavior tells me you're a rabble rouser out there to pick fights with believers. I doubt if you're even a genuine believer. You can keep up your drivel here but I'm ignoring you "warn a divisive person once and after that have nothing to do with him". Good bye.

You start out going on about "thumb your nose at convention". Sorry, but it's a cheap trick to redefine terms when you get called on them.

--If you don't understand that aspect of grace, I have nothing further to say to you. You will find out on judgment day who the real Christians are, if you continue in faith that long.

If I do continue in the faith for that long, it will be by God's grace, not my own radicalness.

--You're no super Apostle and believers aren't as stupid as you think they are.

I don't recall ever claiming, either plainly or by implication, that I am a super apostle.

--Believers know that they have to pay taxes and submit to authorities. They don't need your lectures on that.

I don't recall saying anything about paying taxes, either, but that's one implication of submitting to authorities, so ok. But it's also about much more than paying taxes.

--This is about rebelling against authorities who defy God's word including but not limited to abortion, homosexuality and other perversions that they legalize which are not God's will and not for defying rule of law.

Again, redefining terms. You started off going on about "thumb your nose at convention". Those things aren't social conventions, but sins, and fall under the things where "we must obey God rather than men".

--Your stupidity is apalling.

Well, I do aim to please.

--Your behavior tells me you're a rabble rouser out there to pick fights with believers.

I think that I must thank you for one thing: proving me right about how self-centered this talk about being radical can make a person. You really think you're above correction? You really think that no one is allowed to question you? You really think you're qualified to judge my salvation, to condemn me for voicing some disagreements with you?

You're not radical, you're just a cliche.

One more thing, get out of your mom's basement, get a job and start paying taxes. Stop watching inappropriate content all day and be baptized in the Holy Spirit. You're not even a Christian, you disgrace to Christ. You're just a freeloading loafer, you useless, pathetic garbage

The one who wants to set himself up on a pedestal, who wants the whole world to look at him and how good he is, how zealous and radical he is, should give thought to certain warnings and instructions from Scripture.

Luke 18

9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “ Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, k would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

We should be wary of lifting ourselves up, of exalting ourselves. The Pharisee was so proud that his prayer was little more than him bragging about his good works to God. We would be wiser to see ourselves as the tax collector, as sinners who are in need of God's mercy.

Luke 17

(Jesus said) 7 “ Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8 Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”

In the end, we are even less than unprofitable, for we do not do all that is commanded of us. We are sinners, even we Christians, and we break God commands all the time. We have nothing to brag about in ourselves.

Matthew 6

(Jesus said) “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Seems pretty plain; Jesus warns us to not do good works so that we can be seen doing them. Even if no one else sees what we do, God sees us, and he will reward us.

Matthew 10

(Jesus said) 40 "Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward."

It is the world that focuses so much on the big, the loud, the flashy. It is the world that focuses so much on the outward appearance, but it is God who sees the heart. God will reward even the one who can give only a cup of water, one a small bit of refreshment.

Ephesians 4

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Far from lifting ourselves up and bragging about our supposed radicalness, Paul tells us to be humble, gentle, and patient, bearing with each other in love.

And, finally, there is this sobering account from Jesus.

Matthew 7

(Jesus said) 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'

How radical were these people? They were prophets, they were miracle workers, they even cast out demons! And they did it all in Jesus' name! Yet Jesus rejects them, he says he did not know them. Their works were sin, lawless, even their supposed great works and miraculous works.

Can we see how dangerous pride is? How dangerous boasting is? How any attempts to lift ourselves up is unwise?
