I must be too bored in my life to focus on something like this but when a church makes a Facebook post and says "holiday shopping" instead of "Christmas shopping," what do think about that? I know the secular world is censoring the C word but come on, a church?
Maybe it's just for that kind of post - I can't imagine them not using the word when Christmas is actually imminent, but I felt they didn't need to censor it for shopping.

I don't know that a church would be censoring it. It may be something that was written without thinking about it. It may be that they wanted to decouple Christmas from commercialism a tiny bit. Or, if the church fancies itself as "progressive" they may have been censoring it, but the information that was provided is not enough to judge it by.

So many churches are choosing the wide path these days. We were warned about this in Revelation.

I'm going all ye medieval and sayeth Mass of Christ. The secular world is indeed trying to minimize the word Christmas. Happy holiday rings hollow when I'm not even taking holiday during the Christmas season. Can't say much about the intentions of the church you speak of. Maybe it is benign and the poster didn't put much thought into it.

If the event was only for that congregation, I would agree that they should have used "Christmas shopping". If it was directed toward anyone, of any faith or no faith, then "holiday shopping" would be okay.

In the commercial world where sales and profits are king, using the word "holiday" covers all the holidays of the season, and leaves out only those who do not celebrate any at all.

One personal note about "holiday" gift giving. A few years ago, I told all my close adult family members not to give me any gifts, but instead to make a donation in my name to a food pantry or other worthy charity. And I do the same for them. It was partly altruistic, but also because it meant we didn't have to figure out what to get each other. I tell my kids and grandkids not to give me anything personal but their time and some big hugs. Best presents ever.

Somehow "Nativity shopping" doesn't quite work in English, so I think we're going to dodge this particular bullet in my Church, but yeah that would irritate me. Just call it Christmas. You're a church, not a Nordstrom's or whatever.

I can't stand when someone says "Happy Holidays" I want to ask them "what holiday, there are many" It is Christmas and I will always say it. I have two pins that I wear during the Christmas season, one says "Happy Birthday Jesus" and the other says "It is alright to say Merry Christmas" I really don't like it when the sales associates completes the sale and then says "Happy holidays" I always say back "Merry Christmas"
