I agree with a lot of your post I thought the basic idea of a female Jedi was fine and potentially a good twist.

Except we see female Jedi all through Cannon and the Extended Universe. It wasn't a twist. Female Jedi were already established in cannon (Leia, Jocasta Nu, Luminara, Shaak Ti, ect). Don't even get me started on Nomi Sunrider in the EU

Rey however had a lot of Mary Sue problems and that I think had a lot due to the "Future is Female" agenda as well as the bad management of the Star Wars and Disney's aggressive film making goals which really sacrificed fore thought, planning, refining ideas etc.

Luke is a Mary Sue as well*, he just loses some of the Mary Sueness in retrospective. Various Force Powers are now well established in cannon, so ante building for dramatic effect creates ever more powerful characters. If Ms Rey had been Mr Ray, I also suspect there would have not been as much Mary Sue/Marty Stu talk.

Could the sequels have been done better? Sure. But it wasn't having strong female characters that ruined them - see, for instance, Wonder Woman. Their issues were more structural and plot related, rather than character related. That and not knowing to do with the set up.

*Luke goes from farm boy to using military grade weapons and flying a star fighter into combat without any training, using the Force, hearing Force ghosts and making shots impossible for a computer to save the day.

Yeah but most of the public is not really familiar with the Extended Universe they only know about the stuff in the movies, and a few may have watched some of the episodes of Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels.

There is a lot of good material there. I actually love the back story of things like the History of the Sith. I would have loved a series dealing with the Old Republic, or one dealing with the extended universe that happened after the fall of the Empire as depicted in the various novels, comic books etc. Which I never read, but after the second Trilogy I got into reading the history and lore via the internet especially after playing the Bioware Star Wars game and their MMO.


Sticking to the original source material and simply adapting it for movies, TV shows like what the Walking Dead did for the original TV show would be a no brainer path to success, but some people just got to do their own thing....

It was back in the 50s when I was growing up in GA. It was an article of faith in some (if not most) Southern Baptist churches that separation of the races was God-ordained. To their credit, they've admitted error, and rejected that position. That's my point. Times change and doctrines change--even religious doctrines.

Yikes. Looks like a bunch of extras from Mississipi Burning.

Which reminds me of the time I found myself as an extra in one of the Superman movies that was being filmed in Sydney (hey, it's a clumsy segue, but it was my moment of fame and the thread's about Kal El). I was working on a Sunday in the the city and when I came out mid afternoon, the whole street was set up for a shot. Dozens of extras, cars at all angles along the road and a cable about 3 stories high running along the street. Seems they were running a camera along it and would superimpose the Man of Steel into the scene in post (see, I've got all the technical terms).

I asked one of the extras outside my building what was going on and she told me about the shot, how long it took (all day), how many involved (scores), what she was paid (not bad for a day's work just standing around) and how she got the work. Then it was 'Quiet please. And...action!' And the camera shot along the cable. I did my best 'Is it a bird? Is it a plane..?' and then they did another and I went home.

Months later, I hired the dvd and waited for the scene. It lasted about a second and a half and no matter how many times I froze it I couldn't make out my award winning performance. But it made me think - all the extras, the technical staff, the cost of closing down a main street in the city, the costumes, the catering - it must have cost a small fortune. And for not much more than a second or two of screen time. Go figure.
