A month or so ago I posted a thread asking talking about a potential future war with China over Taiwan etc. in light of their rhetoric, military incursions etc. Someone in the thread pointed out that Taiwan makes 60% of the world's semiconductors. Anyway I was thinking more about that previous topic in light of watching this Indian You-tubers video on "The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue"



The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or what is more commonly known as the Quad, has decided to end China's global domination dreams with a single move- restructuring semiconductor supply chains. Watch this video to know more.

Hi PM,

Well, my son worked for Intel for awhile. He tells me that Intel is pretty much the only American company to manufacture silicon chips here in America. We long ago gave up our chip manufacturing capabilities to foreign companies. Most of our military chips are made by Intel. Oddly, Qualcomm and Intel just won a huge contract for chips and the report says that Intel will actually be making the chips for Qualcomm. Weird, huh?

But Intel seems to be our last American soil manufacturer of computer chips.

The US produces just 12% of the world's computer chip supply. Here's why it's trailing China when it comes to manufacturing and how it plans to get ahead.

As of may 2021, there were rumors of tesla seeking to acquire their own semiconductor foundry in a bid to overcome semiconductor shortages.

Tesla is set to take the unusual step of paying in advance for chips to secure its supply of the crucial materials and is also exploring buying a plant as part of efforts to overcome the global shortage, according to people familiar with the matter.

“They will buy capacity at first, but they are actively considering buying their own foundry,” said Ambrose Conroy, founder and chief executive of Seraph Consulting, a supply chain consultancy, of Tesla.


But most observers believe that acquiring and running a chip facility would be a step too far for carmakers such as Tesla.

“They see the price tag for the factory and they go back and get in line,” said Velu Sinha, a partner at Bain in Shanghai.

A cutting-edge fab requires investment of up to $20 billion (€16.4 billion) and the intricacies of operating such plants are notoriously hard to master.

I hope Elon Musk and tesla acquire a semiconductor foundry and help america recover some of its lost technology manufacturing capacity and reliable domestic supply of high tech components.

Thanks, well I was going to mention my brother Martin's company of LAM research, but I guess technically they do not make chips as much make the robots that make the chips.

Hi PM,

Yes, as you may have read in the article I linked, the actual slicing and encoding the silicon chips/wafers is a very costly process. I'm not really familiar with all that is involved, but I do know that America long since handed the actual making of the chips over to foreign companies, mainly in Taiwan. American companies just create a product that needs a chip, then they engineer what they want on the chip surface and send that to some foreign chip manufacturer who then sends back a boatload of processed chips.

I find Biden doing anything whatsoever to protect U.S. supply chains preposterous because of the democratic parties stance against the U.S. attempting the same under Trump. They seem far more bent on an alliance with China (regardless of the cost) over independence of dependency on them. You know... because racism. Lol...

I will say protecting our supply lines and freeing us from Chinese dependency is necessary regardless of who is in office, but politicians these days like to say pretty things and then not follow through on anything of benefit to us... that was why i voted for Trump to begin with.

Yeah I think he is, but he is all over the road. Like he cares as much or more "on climate change" than this, and it is a kind of a token resistance, especially what he said the other day at the UN, about stuff like "not wanting a new Cold War" (with China) etc. I mean you can have a country, completely disable your economy with a virus, not only lie about it, but actually facilitate it by not locking down flights (while they are locking down internal travel) this not just an action for a "Cold War", but I'm pretty sure plenty of hot wars been fought over much, much less.

e.g.- The US for instance nearly went to war with Great Britain over their interference with our commerce in the early part of World War I, by blocking trade with Germany etc. We fought an actual war with Great Britain from them press ganging our sailors at sea in 1812 etc.
