But "marijuana" isn't a real word. It's just a Spanish slang word invented in Mexico.

...Here in the United States we call hemp, and other non THC Cannabis plants "schwag", or "ditchweed" (English slang). We consider everything else Cannabis.
How familiar are you with cannabis culture? That doesn't jibe with my experience of it at all...

I am cannabis culture. :) (JK)

...Nobody says "marijuana" anymore, unless you're a cop or you're out of date with the times. All the stores here in California sell "cannabis".

Don't feel to bad, It seems a branding thing for legal pot. I hadn't seen it till I went to California this spring. Looks better on the boutique sign with the Beemers in the parking lot. New York hasn't gotten their yet but we will probably start calling it cannabis soon. :)

I guess it's the image of respectability. I await the day when the UK will open its eyes to the possibility. When I was a student, one could be a connoisseur of all the different kinds and preparations of cannabis, and indulging was a communal, social activity.

Seems to be a valid word.

Do I dare say that we have won, or at least that we and our communal understandings then were not irrelevant? Avoiding old comments.

I'm sorry, I don't understand...
Sorry, Marijuana or pot or cannabis was denigrated and went through a long period of massive legal abuse of those who partook, but that seems to have changed. That said, I gave up whatever you want to call it years ago.

OIC! Yes, it's changing - it's telling that it wasn't the moral or the health arguments that prevailed in the end, but the financial argument - tax income. Over here, the hugely expensive war on drugs, including cannabis, continues.

I still indulge occasionally, a light and speedy mood-elevating sativa variety called Silver Pearl. I never liked the heavy, stupefying indica stone.

It's been a valid word... The times, they are a changin'. Cannabis isn't an exotic, foreign kind of thing anymore... It's an American thing now, and so it needs an English name.
How do you pronounce rendezvous? ren-dev-us?

The only reason English people refused to name marijuana is because they refused to identify it as an English custom.

I'm not against Spanish or any other language. I'm for *normalization*... There's nothing wrong with that.

Unless you're an old man like me who had a checkered past.

It's simply a marketing angle that wants to distance itself from its' historical past. It had been commonly and constantly referred to as marijuana in the news in a negative manner way back when I was a teenager. That generation of time was dealing with an older establishment who were influenced by films like Reefer Madness.

If a business seeking legitimacy is going to sell a product, avoiding negative historical connotations makes it more palatable for those who are still politically against its sale. Trying to wipe it from the minds of future generations is about making a dollar.
