I had AOL and a 14.4K modem. I remember installing Windows from floppy drives.

Yep, that's how I installed Macintosh System 7.5, 3.5" floppy disks on our old Macintosh Performa 6118. IIRC we couldn't run the internet on 7.5 though, by the time we got connected I think we were running (now) MacOS 7.6, 8, or 8.5.

We had an IBM Aptiva with Windows 98 and boy oh boy did that OS lock up a lot.

It was the first windows OS to have desktop themes though, and I liked those. I usually used the space one, but I ended up downloading a few smashing pumpkins ones too. Those downloads took a while even though they were only a few megs.

To me, it’s been a lifesaver. I have made loads of friends and then there have been some fellow Catholics that liked to push the boundaries and play the devil’s advocate.

One thing I have noticed, as a Catholic, is a particular viewpoint here. It's been squeezed out over the years. Maybe not all Catholics share the same viewpoint. That's been my opinion over the last 20 years since King's Tavern.

I have always wondered why the Salt of the Earth and the Lord's Table are closed while other faith groups are still open. Are these two things related? Or was it just too hard moderating multiple Catholic groups for the typical anti-Catholic misunderstandings that people constantly post?

Too much infighting between the forums. Etc.

Oh, that makes sense.
Yeah there was a lot of snide comments going back and forth between forums and discussion of the other forums in a passive aggressive way. There is really no need to split up Catholics like that. I think it caused more trouble than it was worth. It fed the divisiveness going on at the time.

I just realized I never gave my own account. Doh.

I think I popped in occasionally for the first 6-7 years or so I was on CF but then I jumped into RCIA and this quickly became the only corner of the site I cared to come to.

I tell you what this place played an instrumental role in my conversion, with friends making great suggestions and recommendations, showing patience as I learned and grew, and generally demonstrating what proper Catholicism looks like.

I had a lot of moral conversion to go through. I was raised conservative but was pretty liberal at the time of my conversion, I thought it was possible, but God gave me the graces to open up my heart and mind fully to the teachings of the Church - not just theological and practical, but moral. And I quickly experienced a conversion (or maybe reversion?) from a liberal to an conservative-orthodox morality.

Deo gratias for that!

Ever since I've enjoyed the company of folks on here, Michie always stoking the flames of discussion with her sharing articles and posts, and then all the other regulars engaging in different levels of conversation. To me it's the best Catholic spot online, Catholic Reddit is bigger, but it's also too much of a fray with too much questionable tolerance on there with creeping protestantism subtly entering in.

This place has been a stalwart of an online community, and while it may not be as bustling as it was 10 years ago, I still think it's an excellent "gathering place".

Cheers my friends.

They tended to be too quarrelsome, plus I think ultimately there was a bit too much overlap and redundancy so they just consolidated everything again.

I was kind of hoping when Catholic Answers shutdown their forums at least some of their members would migrate here, but I don't know if that happened. I don't know if that's a good thing to wish for either cause it might've been a toxic community. I don't know much about it. I know at least a few of them ended up on Catholic Reddit.

Well I'm from California and I know @eastcoast_bsc is from Boston so there goes that theory.

But sure let's lay it over our political spectrum instead of just calling what it is: faithfulness to the magisterium.

Very on brand.

Actually I don't. Please appease my curiosity as it wasn't piqued enough to log in and post on this thread until I got to your comment. I remember the Kings Tavern, and some of the posters.
