As a child 50 years ago I had a book called 'Shining Hours ' which had a story about a Norwegian girl who made a carved dragon chair for her name day. The story explained about the name day, which I found really different and interesting.

Interesting!
Norwegians are not noted for their interest in name days! :)

My main name day is on August 20.

Because of him:

Bernard of Clairvaux, O. Cist. (Latin: Bernardus Claraevallensis; 1090 – 20 August 1153), venerated as Saint Bernard, was an abbot, mystic, co-founder of the Knights Templar, and a major leader in the reformation of the Benedictine Order through the nascent Cistercian Order.

He was sent to found Clairvaux Abbey at an isolated clearing in a glen known as the Val d'Absinthe, about 15 kilometres (9 mi) southeast of Bar-sur-Aube. In the year 1128, Bernard attended the Council of Troyes, at which he traced the outlines of the Rule of the Knights Templar,[a] which soon became an ideal of Christian nobility.

But I have other name days as well. :)

Again I am overwhelmed by that much active interest! :)
Post in the Eastern Orthodox subforum and you will get a different result ;)

Celebrating birthdays are egocentric, whereas celebrating Name days are Christocentric, because you are Celebrating the life of someone who actively "put on Christ" in their lifetime.
When someone celebrates their birthday, it is expected that guests with bring that person gifts. When celebrating your Nameday however, it is customery for the person celebrating to offer gifts to their guests, usually in the form of sweets or savory snacks, sometimes small icons of the Saint being celebrated.
It is a beautiful tradition.

It is a beautiful tradition.
So I think as well!

And I think it a real pity how this topic is often disrespected and mocked as "Catholic nonsense".
Acording to this "logic": Something that I dont know must be nonsense!
