When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day—
— Colossians 2:13-16

My understanding is that the first part is about those who have been reborn, since it says "made you alive ..." (You are hardly alive when you are dead in sins). The second part after "having forgiven us all transgressions" I'm not sure about. The certificate of dept is it possibly the ceremonial Laws since he continues "Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival ..."?

I like to hear your understanding. Christ love!

The "having forgiven us all transgressions" is directed mainly at Jewish converts. Within Judaism there are some sins that cannot be atoned for. I read once in the Talmud an account of a rabbi who had a student. The student, for whatever reason, decided to simply "give up". He propped up a brick and worshipped it. That was a means of "spiritual suicide". It could not be atoned for under the law of Moses, so the student was irretrievably lost. Just as Paul said in Acts:

Act 13:39 “and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

It's also the meaning of 1 John:

1Jo 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

That fear he mentioned was among Jewish converts who doubted they had been forgiven -or ever could be forgiven- for things they had done in the past.

Paul's epistle was written to the church at Colossae, a primarily Gentile city. He also declares himself to be the apostle to the Gentiles, so I disagree that "having forgiven us all transgressions" is directed mainly at Jewish converts.

I also disagree with your statement that the fear he mentioned was among Jewish converts who doubted they had been forgiven -or ever could be forgiven- for things they had done in the past.

Would you elaborate on why you think these directions were specifically for the Jews?

Colossians 1:27, "God wanted to make known to them the glorious riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."

Colossians 2:11, "In him you also were circumcised—not, however, with a circumcision performed by human hands, but by the removal of the fleshly body, that is, through the circumcision done by Christ." As you know, Jews were all circumcised "by human hands".

The new testament is filled with that same idea. Jesus said he had come to save "the lost". The lost were those who had strayed from the law and at that time conventional wisdom held that they could not return. Jesus's statement that "all sins will be forgiven" is directed at that same audience. The accusation the Pharisees made toward Jesus that he ate and drank with "sinners" has the same meaning. Those "sinners" had left Judaism and were "written off".

If you were a Jew of the first century and had strayed from Judaism, having been taught all your life that some things could not be atoned for, you would also have doubts about whether your sins had in fact been forgiven.

This is interesting but it's not scriptural. The "lost" are all those who are separated from God, Jews and gentiles. If that wasn't the case He would not be very effective as the Savior of the world.

Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

John 3:16-19, " For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil."

Mat 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.

Mat 10:6 “But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
