Over the past 40 years or so, I have learned this lesson: If you are covering a controversial story and you find a key point where an activist or two in the clashing armies agree with one another, that’s probably something worth noting.

That happened this week while reading a couple of thousand words of commentary about the decision by Pope Francis to all but crush some of the growing communities of priests and traditional Catholics who choose to celebrate the old Latin Mass. To catch up on that, see: “'Where there is incense there is fire.' True, but reporters can seek voices in middle of that war.” And check out this one, too: “Ties that bind? Concerning journalism, Grindr, secrecy, homophobia and the Latin Mass.”

While recording this week’s “Crossroads” podcast (click here to check that out), I read two quotations — one from the Catholic right and one from the left. They offer two completely different takes on what’s happening in the Latin Mass wars, except that they seem to agree on one crucial reality.

The goal is to spot that common ground. Ready?

Quote No. 1 comes from conservative Amy Welborn, writing at her “Charlotte was Both” weblog:

I'm going to my first ever TLM tomorrow morning at 10:30 and to say that I am nervous about it is the understatement of the year. I do not have a suit and tie or anything like that to wear, so I'm just going to wear what I wore to mass today and add a nice button down shirt to it. Hopefully I don't upset people by not owning nice clothes.

Oh and I have absolutely no idea what to do, and do not know any Latin.

Resist. Teach yourself Latin. At least a little. Light the fire.

May I ask, what is the significance of Latin in the Catholic faith? Is there a spiritual significance? After all, the pagan Romans spoke Latin before the conversion of Rome.

Or is it just the traditional aspect?

I've heard (now I can't find the actual source that went into detail) that ancient Catholic liturgies were generally presented in their local language before the TLM became a wide-spread tradition.

Thanks, it's a 90 mile roundtrip so I seriously doubt that I'm going to be able to go every week and since I wanted to be able to participate in the mass, I went to my usual N O mass this evening (I had tried to go to confession and got there with fifteen minutes to spare, but the priest had left the booth already for some reason).

I've got a nice pair of pants and a button down shirt that matches, so I'm going to wear those because I do not own a suit or dress pants or anything. I'm worried that people are going to be offended by this just like I am worried that I'm going to do something wrong or not be able to follow along. I don't know any Latin whatsoever and I'm hoping that they provide Missals to follow along with.

Don’t worry! Not everyone dresses in a three piece suit. You will be fine. Just soak it in and be blessed! :)
