I am puzzled what GOP strategist and politician trying to do. I can see what Mitch Mcconnell and Kevin Mccarthy is doing. They want to keep Trump in their good grace so they can take back the congress with Trump’s support in 2022.

I am failing to understand what is the strategy for Ted Cruz , Mike Pompeo, Ron Desantis and others. They all want to be president and regardless Trump run 2024, they all will run for President in 2024. How are they going to separate themselves from Trump or from each other when they all want to get MAGA vote.

Liz Cheney on the other hand may not be popular among republican now, but she already established herself as the alternative choice for Republicans. She will get all the support from never Trumpper.

Any thoughts?

Cruz et al are probably either hoping that Trump decides not to run in 2024, or that they can convince him to take them along as VP, which they can then use to launch them into the presidency in 2028.

I am curious how you came to that conclusion.

Ah it make sense about VP position. But if Cruz and Co thinks politics will be same in 2028 as it is today, then they are dumber then I thought.

Afraid of retribution front Trump and afraid of his supporters not supporting them.

One of the mistake GOP did in 2015 is that they ignored Trump and all the moderate fought with each other until there were no one left from moderate wing. I don’t think they will make same mistake. But my question is , how Ted or Rubio going to separate themselves from Trumpism and yet get all the MAGA vote?

Why couldn't they? Anyhow, there's no reason to think that they all are going to run in 2024, even though that's what you wrote. And if Trump were to run himself, most or all of these men would most likely not run. We are in the very early "testing the waters" stage of things as far as the 2024 presidential election goes.

Liz Cheney on the other hand may not be popular among republican now, but she already established herself as the alternative choice for Republicans. She will get all the support from never Trumpper.
Since the NeverTrumpers have almost no support among Republicans, and that fact was proven by their embarrassing failure with the "Lincoln Project" in 2020, her best hope is to buy re-election to the House of Representatives. This is what it looks like she is going to try to do.

I think their strategy is the same as in every election: Drop out of the primary candidate one by one and support the most vanilla candidate in the hopes that he gets more votes than Trump.

Well said. As it has been very clear, republican party is not about idea, but all about Trump. If Trump runs every other republican cheer him up because no one else has any idea on their own.

Given that it may well have cost Trump the White House in 2020, I wouldn't call it an embarrassing failure at all. :)

They're probably hoping Trump doesn't run (due to ill health or being in prison) but the likes of Cruz have no chance anyway after his humiliating craven behaviour in 2016. All Democrats need to do is show endless clips of him attacking Trump, then Trump insulting him and his wife, and then him licking Trumps boots after the election. That's a sequence that makes him look incredibly weak and pathetic and driven only by a lust for power.

The Liz Cheney wing of the party has about a zero chance at nominating and electing the president of the US.

For the rest, it is wait and see. After the 2022 elections, they all can see where they are.

The Republicans have different opinions and strategies. However, I believe most are focused on winning the House and Senate. There are a few, like Cheney, that have chosen different agendas.

They're positioning themselves to be the next Donald, in spite of the fact that the first Donald is hardly one to share or surrender the spotlight -- his 2024 reelection campaign being almost a mathematical certainty.

The more intelligent possibility is that they're expecting him to be out of the picture by 2024, owing most likely to imprisonment or self-imposed exile out of US jurisdiction -- They're counting on not even Donald's base to be loyal to a presidential candidate "campaigning" from a prison cell; let us hope they're correct.

Or... perhaps they really are naive enough to think that Donald will endorse someone besides himself... how sweet.

Donald Trump is also in his mid-70s and not in the best of health. They might be banking on him not being around.

True -- although, for a morbidly obese senior citizen with atrocious dietary habits, a horrible sleep schedule, poor impulse control, and glaring anger management issues, if four years of the most stress-inducing job in human history didn't cause him to keel over, he'll probably make it to 2024.

OTOH, perhaps a few more zealous GOP members have a plan in the works -- all we need are a handful to figure out that Donald's far more useful as a martyr than a candidate.

My guess is they'll go after the moderate Democrats who voted Biden in...

They'll point out that he's destroying the economy with handouts and inflation.

They'll point out that the left is trying to push racial indoctrination on their children.

They'll blame Harris for the total failure at the border and the hundreds of covid infected aliens pouring across the border from all across the world.

They'll point out that issues like healthcare and the environment have been ignored.

They'll point out that the rising crime rates are a result of liberal activist attacks on the police.

In short, they don't have to make any big gains....they can simply point out the myriad failures of this administration and the complete lack of care for what moderate Democratic voters want.
