The immersion and raising up from water in baptism is to die and be buried with Christ.
Romans 6:
3
Or do you not know that as many of us who are baptized into Christ Jesus
are baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as
Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in the newness of life.
5
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly
we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin
might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
8
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more.
Death no longer has dominion over Him.
10
For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives,
He lives to God.
11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive
to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Faith is incomplete if water baptism is seen to be merely symbolic.
This act is the death of the old man that we may put on the new man.

Romans 7:
4
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through
the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was
raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused
by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.
6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we
were held
by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit
and not in the oldness of the letter.

The Spirit in which you now must live in, and move in and have your being,
is the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead.

Romans 8:
9
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells
in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
10
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life
because of righteousness.
11
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,
He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through
His Spirit who dwells in you.

Paul is concluding in chapter 8 what he has introduced back in chapter 5.
Romans 5:
8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.
9 Much more, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath
through Him.
10
For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son,
much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11
And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

This is what Smith Wigglesworth have said:

It is possible to hear and not conceive the truth.
It is possible to read and not share the life it brings.
It is necessary for us to have the Holy Ghost to enfold the words that is Christ.
We can never fully understand the wonder of this redemption until we are full of the Holy Ghost.

Paul's doctrine is meaningless to those who have not the new birth, and the abiding Holy Spirit.
Smith Wigglesworth has quite an amazing testimony. He was not timid to face down death, over
and over, and come away victorious in Christ. Bold enough to say, "I have seen Christ", during
his deathbed intercessions. Even when his wife was begging him to accept that they were gone,
he believed the Lord would bring them back if he remained in intercession.
