And just like that, the CDC is "wrong" now in the eyes of some folks...

For months we heard about the importance of sticking to CDC guidelines, and following the advice of experts...

Now that they've relaxed their guidelines through a couple of iterations for those of us who are vaccinated, some folks have changed their tune.

For quite a while, I had my suspicions that some folks were using a mask as a virtue signal rather than for it's practical purpose.

I agreed with masking during the time where the vaccine wasn't widely available to everyone...but now that it's available to practically anyone who wants it (places are offering walk-in appointments), and everyone who wants to protect themselves, can do so.

I think that people may expose themselves a bit based on whether or not they opt to still wear a mask after being fully vaccinated.

If people who are fully vaccinated ditch the mask when given the freedom to do so, then they were using it for the pragmatic and functional purpose. If they come up with reasons for why they still want to wear them despite being vaccinated or now start questioning the institutional experts they've claimed to revere for the last 12 months, I think it's safe to assume that for them, the mask is basically the left-wing equivalent of a MAGA hat.

If you just ask at the door, most places will give you one for free. :)
I wear a mask and I’m fully vaccinated. My concern is regardless of the ever changing narrative, I’m still concerned about the vulnerable. My mom, my mil, etc. At this point, I just feel it’s better to be safe than sorry. It has nothing to do with maga hats or virtue signaling at all. People are cautious and reasonably so imo.

I'm just thankful we are getting to the point where we can ditch the masks, which for me was the worst part of this (never got use to them). That was the big thing that really bothered me when they started to roll out the vaccines to the public. If I'm going to take some experimental vaccine, I at least want to not have to be able to get back to normal life and not wear a mask in public, and they did their best to drag their feet and hem and haw on that which made people who were suspicious of the Covid vaccines more reason to think they weren't that good or affective.

There have been times I forgot to put the mask on. Just recently too. There is always some loudmouth asking where it is. I just put it on and carry on. Seems some use this pandemic to spoil for a fight.

I think some people still wear masks because they don't completely trust the vaccine. It is just another method of protection, like staying 6 feet apart.

Right, but that guidance (for wearing a mask, and keeping distance) was from the same institutions that some folks are claiming to be skeptical of now.

"I believe them when they say to put the mask, but not when the say it's okay to take it off" seems counterintuitive.

For the record, I'm fully vaccinated, wore my mask when it was necessary, and limited my indoor contacts to people within my "bubble" prior to being vaccinated.

I "played by the rules" so to speak, which was what many in that camp were demanding. But now that the rules are being changed (in ways that could strip them of their virtue signaling ability), all of the sudden, they're the ones who are skeptical of the CDC and questioning the experts (who they claimed were unbiased and incorruptible 2 months ago)

Got together with several friends (who are on the left politically) who are also vaccinated, and we went down to Amish country this past weekend, went mask-free everywhere we went, indoors and out.

It's not everyone who's on the left who's rejecting the CDC guidelines, it's just the subset who still sees intrinsic value in "showing everyone else how seriously I'm taking it".

We even got to witness it first-hand in a few of the stores we went in...there were some people (who we crossed paths with multiple times) who were wearing masks, and had to "just casually" keep bringing up in conversation - with anyone who would listen - that "even though I'm vaccinated, I'm still wearing my mask because...yada yada yada"

"I'm going to keep wearing it, because I don't trust the CDC's judgement" falls a bit flat when it was their judgement that suggested that they put it on in the first place.

I see that more as paranoia and hypochondria that the media largely served to promote.

I'm just glad they are starting to listen to reason, because I was planning on taking back my right to "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" with Civil Disobedience after I become fully vaccinated which will be mid June if they did not. I still may need to do some of that. We will see how long it takes shops and restaurants to recognize the new CDC guidelines. From what I hear, they are however easy to put aside for more strict state regulations... :(

It’s just no wonder that people are in a state of confusion and indecisive at this point. The message has been very contradictory and changing by the second. It may change still. This has nothing to do with anything but the confusion and contradictory messages that have been put out.

I don't disagree and believe there are some people who are wearing a mask as a statement. (As my mom said, "It doesn't take all kinds...there just are all kinds".) For myself throughout this pandemic I have just used my own judgement. It wasn't CDC guidelines that convinced me to wear a mask, it just seemed like a common sense way to avoid an airborne illness. I have never really trusted the CDC, (Who scoffed at Trump of all people, when he suggested masks.) and see their current stance as a bid to convince those pesky anti-vaxers, that they better hurry and get the shot or they will be wearing masks until the cows come home. Frankly I'm not convinced the vaccine is as affective as they claim (Though I hope it is.) so I continue to wear masks and social distance as my personal judgment dictates. It really never occurred to me, that people might think I'm making a statement, but I guess everything has gotten politicized.

The message as far as the links is division. People are still wailing about Trump, etc. the media is hugely responsible among other things. I’m just not playing. I think it’s obvious they need a scapegoat to continue as before.

You know that Polish pastor in Canada who has been making the news with his Covid protesting, and defying the authorities with street preaching and feeding the poor. He had an interesting sermon on this stuff talking about the Bible passage of people given over to a "strong delusion".

Anyway it was interesting in early April he had a video that he posted that I think got removed from You-tube recently. The video was he was in a Canadian drug store, trying to buy a postage stamp to mail a letter. He was not wearing a mask, and is suppose to have a medical exemption from that. But he was refused service. But he is not the type of person to back down because the fact that some people have medical exemptions is part of the Canadian orders on that. But basically stuck around for 45-52 minutes arguing his case with the store personnel, one security guard, and police officer that wandered in. They originally said he needed a mask. After hearing him describe the regulation in detail agreed that he would not be required to have a mask, but said the store was right to refuse him service.

But the whole thing was funny, because if people were genuinely afraid of him spreading Covid germs by refusing him service etc. they kept him around 50-100 times longer than if they actually would have sold him the stamp!

I've got friends that are slow adopters when it comes to this tech. They will take traditional well tested vaccines but don't want to be Ginneapigs for this new thing.

I started wearing a mask before the CDC said it was cool, and will continue to do so. I haven't gotten the vaccine, not because i think "they're trying to control us" or "track us" or "change our DNA", but because i don't believe they a) fully understand the long term risks and/or b) are giving full disclosure about the risks. I continue to wear a mask and social distance. That isn't to say that i'm fully "isolated", i just socialize in scenarios where transmission is low (i.e. outdoors). I don't fully trust the CDC, but masks limiting transmission of aerosols is intuitively obvious, although i don't believe a mask will help in scenarios of prolonged indoor contact with poor ventilation.

I think it's fairly obvious that my mask wearing isn't a political statement, nor do i assume it's a political statement by others. I think it's a personal choice that is done to a) allow others to feel protected and/or b) allow oneself to feel protected.

While i'm sure there are those who virtue signal via masking, it hasn't been my experience that it represents a majority or even a large percentage of those who mask, vaccinated or not.

And I understand that. When my age group was eligible for it, I was not trusting of it either but given my circumstances, I felt I had no choice. My mother cannot take the shot. It could kill her. So I continue to wear my mask for her and basically everywhere I go. I resent my concerns due to my circumstances are judged so stupidly.

I get that the masks became a political issue when they shouldn't have.

I get that people were being morally judged for not wearing them when they shouldn't have been.

I get that now people are judged for vaccines or masks and stuff.

Does anyone really feel that way though? I honestly never felt any animosity or resentment towards those who did or didn't wear a mask.

I don't think of the vaccinated as virtuous or unvaccinated as immoral.

And now that it's come around full circle....I don't feel any different. I don't resent the masked vaccinated, I don't judge.

We all began this thing without a living experience of such a pandemic. It's no surprise that we saw so many people making so many different choices. None of it was really shocking...there were no flagellants scouring their backs in the public square.

I don't see why this need to judge and condemn seems to grip the minds of so many.
