The judge says Trump is allowed to reverse previous policies, but the administration has to show its factual basis when doing so, and they didn't. Oops.

Judge Blocks the Disputed Keystone XL Pipeline in a Setback for Trump’s Energy Agenda

The judge said an administration had the right to reverse a previous policy, but still must back up its reason for doing so with facts. The Trump administration did not do that, Judge Morris found.

“The Department instead simply discarded prior factual findings related to climate change to support its course reversal,” he wrote. He cited a United States Supreme Court ruling that noted, “An agency cannot simply disregard contrary or inconvenient factual determinations that it made in the past, any more than it can ignore inconvenient facts when it writes on a blank slate.”

Biden's energy sec says 'pipe is best way' to transport fuel, sparks backlash regarding Keystone XL pipeline - News Break

President Biden’s energy secretary is facing renewed backlash for canceling the Keystone XL pipeline permit after she admitted this week that using a pipeline is "the best way" to transport fuel. At a Tuesday press conference, Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm was asked by a reporter about the...
What sense does it make to have a pipeline bisect our nation that we don’t profit from, Canadian companies pumping their sludge to be transported ELSEWHERE and all that we get all the environmental hazards and whatever tax that they have for the asphalt-like tar sands being oozed through it?

Yes. "Pipelines are the best way to transport gas and oil" != "All pipelines are in our best interests and worth building"

Is it better to transport it by tanker trucks across the country?

A nice thing about the iOS keyboard is that it gives me one of these, ≠ as an option for =.

This was discussed in another thread yesterday. Here's the response I wrote at that time:

The short summary is: Keystone was transporting tar sands petroleum which are more corrosive and more prone to leakage than conventional petroleum. Further Keystone was originally going to skip some of the more strict EPA oversite. Upon completion of that more strict oversite the Obama administration opted to cancel it.

Not all pipelines are the same.

Better for whom? It is better for the people whose aquifers were at risk of contamination. Worse for the investors of the tar pits.

I wonder what the carbon footprint of trucking the oil vs a pipeline is.

Hard to say, but we do know that the tar sands are a particularly dirty form of oil.

The oil doesn't get any cleaner in an endless stream of tanker trucks to move it, it just requires burning a lot more fuel to get it there.

And again, this low-grade “oil” is not for use in American industries nor domestic consumption, why involve ourselves in its transport?

From what I've gleaned the oil is refinable into fuel for motor vehicles and so on.

It takes much more energy to refine which makes the product cheaper. It is also more corrosive.
The Wikipedia article.
Doesn't matter, if it is in abundance then it can be made cost effective if it wasn't useful or cheap enough nobody would buy it and they wouldn't bother building a pipeline to transport it. Why transport something that is worthless?
