Defunding or refunding should never be an issue. Allocating funds to help police deal with the mentally ill better, for example, is money well spent.
Why should police deal with the mentally ill? Why can't mental health providers be funded to help them?

Mentally ill people are sometimes homeless. They may live with family and become unmanageable because they don't take their meds.
My friend's son was picked up acting out with Tourettes. He was never charged. He has a family and a problem.
Miami-Dade County has very effective and cizt effective program. Learn about it on Al Franken's podcast.

Isn't this the proper use of funding? Police funding for fighting crime while defending efforts that do not support that goal (i.e., defund efforts to militarize the police or change their roles so they're not spending a great deal of time harassing and/or ticketing drivers).

The problem with the framing of this thread is that very few people support removing or abolishing police. They exist, but so do MAGA white supremacists, and they so not predominate the group.

Why aren't they assigned a mental health worker?

Would that we had a society that valued mental healthcare. Oh that would be wonderful! Instead the mentally ill are given few options and forced to jump through hoops just to get the help needed.

I have a family member who is highly functional but has an anxiety disorder that requires rather specialized treatment. He has good insurance but insurance makes it 10X harder to get the help needed than it does to facilitate getting the help. Now imagine a poor person who may be homeless or without a social support system.

Like it or not mental health in the USA in the 21st Century is not a high priority for us.

Yes I am aware of this. I have a mentally ill sibling. He finally got the help he needed when he commited a crime becoming a danger to himself and others. Thats really the problem imo. Not enogh help for the families of the mentally ill, or the mentally ill themselves.

I am not getting the point of this. My brother has a family as well. He just wasn't able to get the care he needed, nor his family.

Effective how? I am glad and hope it's good.

Exactly. I have a family member who has a sever disorder. It was hell for everyone to get him what he needed. He had to become criminal to do so. A real shame.

You know that the mentally ill don’t always time their crises to coincide with “office hours”, right?

I meant that although her son has had a union job fif twenty five years and is married to someone who also has mental health issues and 3 children, there are times when he just has a collapse. My friends hold things together by being hands on grandparents, a 24 hour a day safety net.

Miami Dade has police crisis management teams who are dispatched in these situations. They also train regular police in dealing with these crises.

By taking this step, the mentally ill are helped and many millions of dollars have been saved keeping them out of jail.

Why not have the police trained for both?

Instead of a few months of training, why not a 2-3-year program that includes:

Core areas of mental health - de-escalation, what to look for, etc
Core areas of psychology - Mental health disorders, addiction, etc
Core areas of social work - Understanding the system
Core areas of medicine - Life-saving measures, medical ailments, and medications and how it can present
Core areas of law - Knowing and understanding basic laws, people's rights, etc
Core areas of social science - Covering areas of race, systemic racism, sexism, homophobia, etc

Why aren't they assigned a mental health worker?

Because the government doesn't want to pay to help them. In many ways, our current homeless issues started 40 years ago, when the government quit funding mental health facilities. The people who previously were getting treatment for their issues were suddenly on the street, frequently not stable enough to get employed or hold a job. The fact is, the US is terrible on mental health, with many jobs providing little mental health assistance in worker's health plans.
