Yes I understood that. Just thought I would add these verses for those who don't agree.
My observation UR is never clearly stated but its adherents infer it from certain proof texts.

A little off this subject here, this one here

2Cr 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

These are being contrasted between them so both could not mean temporal correct?

In many translations temporal is replaced with temporary. Not sure if thats what you were meaning though

What I really can't fathom though, is how people are so determined that God's chastizements must last forever, and how horrified they appear to be that God actually is both love and mercy. You would think that the Good News of forgiveness would make people want to rejoice in it rather than be upset that Dante's Cruel Palace of Tortures is not real.
Yes. Since they want hell so badly, we should probably give them some. - lol

Halo there,
Leave politics aside. Do you really think God will "kill" you for ever by never ever again delivering you from hell? You should always think the best of God, you know and use your reason also. Your reason existed before the bible. And I heard this passage is translated wrongly, it could mean for ever and it could mean one aeon/one million years or so.

For those of you here that are convinced in your own minds that God would never allow anyone to be tormented in eternal punishment, I ask you to seriously reconsider.

Some Passages appear to suggest that the eternal punishment is eternal destruction or death – the second death. For instance:

Revelation 21:8-19 (WEB) 8 But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Matthew 10:28 (WEB)
28 Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10 (WEB)
5 This is an obvious sign of the righteous judgment of God, to the end that you may be counted worthy of God’s Kingdom, for which you also suffer. 6 Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted with us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 punishing those who don’t know God, and to those who don’t obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus, 9 who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 when he comes in that day to be glorified in his saints and to be admired among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

Jude 7 (WEB)
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, having in the same way as these given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are shown as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

These Passages, mention eternal destruction or the second death, or the fire itself as the eternal punishment. Even so, those Passages may not be defining the absolute meaning of eternal destruction or the second death or eternal fire, as regards to the spiritual part of man. Does eternal destruction, or the second death, or eternal fire, really refer to non-existence?

So, in light of the Passages we just viewed regarding eternal destruction and the second death, consider the following Passages which appear to explain what those words mean to each resurrected person on the Day of Judgment.

Daniel 12:1-2 (WEB)
“At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”

Notice that both are awoken and will either receive everlasting life or everlasting contempt.

What is everlasting contempt? Let us review the other Passages on this subject.

Revelation 14:9-11 (WEB)
9 Another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a great voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead, or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared unmixed in the cup of his anger. He will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. They have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.

Notice the torment of fire and sulfur is forever, and they have no rest day or night. What do you suppose that means? What do the rest of Scriptures have to say about that?

Revelation 20:10 (WEB)
10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The “lake of fire” although described as the “second death” appears to be a place of torment – day and night without rest in Revelation 14:11 and Revelation 20:10.

Revelation 20: 14-15 (WEB)
14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

So, what is the second death in the lake of fire and sulfur, when we view the other Passages describing that place?

Let us review another Passage about this eternal fire?

Lake of Fire is the same place as Gehenna – both being described as eternal fire.

IF this is true, should we fear being cast into Gehenna if all it means is death? If you are dead, you won’t know the difference anyway, so why fear Him who casts you into this forever place of eternal fire?

Why is it better to gouge our your eyes, or cut off your hands or feet, if it causes you to sin, rather then suffer the eternal fire if all it means is death, where you are put out of your misery anyway?

Mark 9:42-48 (WEB) 42 Whoever will cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if he were thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around his neck. 43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire, 44 ‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’ Isaiah 66:24 45 If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehenna, into the fire that will never be quenched— 46 ‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’ 47 If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is better for you to enter into God’s Kingdom with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire, 48 ‘where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.’ [ Isaiah 66:24]

Matthew 18:6-9 (WEB)
6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea.

7 Woe to the world because of occasions of stumbling! 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. 9 If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire.

So this Gehenna is described here as an eternal fire - forever. The Lake of Fire is described the same way. But why should we fear Him who casts people into Gehenna if all it means is you are put out of your misery?

Luke 12:5 (WEB)
5 But I will warn you whom you should fear. Fear him who after he has killed, has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

Let us review the Day of Judgment of the Sheep and the Goats

Matthew 12:31-46 (WEB)
. . . 44 “Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?’ 45 “Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.’ 46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

In the Day of Judgment, some will go into eternal punishment, while the righteous receive eternal life.

What is eternal punishment according to Revelation 14:9-11 and Revelation 20:10?

This place of eternal punishment is also described as a prison that no one can escape, so appears to be forever

Matthew 5:22-26 (WEB)
25 Agree with your adversary quickly while you are with him on the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison. 26 Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

Lord Jesus appears to be describing a place that the unrighteous will be cast into, and is eternal, because no one who is in that prison can pay anything. So this place is forever.

Luke 12:57-59 (WEB)
57 Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 For when you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, try diligently on the way to be released from him, lest perhaps he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will by no means get out of there, until you have paid the very last penny.

Again, Lord Jesus appears to be describing a place that the unrighteous will be cast into, and is eternal, because no one who is that prison can pay anything.

The place of eternal punishment is also described as a place of darkness – forever.

Jude 10-13 (WEB)
. . . 13 wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever.

The place of darkness is reserved for the unrighteous forever. What is darkness that is forever?

Lord Jesus gives us more information about that place of darkness, and it is not pretty.

In the place of darkness, that is forever, people will be weeping and gnashing their teeth.

Matthew 8:11-12 (WEB)
11 I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, 12 but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 22:13 (WEB)
13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where [Literal Greek: “in that place”] the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’

Matthew 25:30 (WEB)
30 Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where [Literal Greek: “in that place”] there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

So, whether this place of eternal punishment is described as “eternal contempt,” or “lake of fire,” or “Gehenna,” or a “prison,” or a place of “outer darkness” three things are certain:
  1. The place of eternal punishment is forever
  2. The place of eternal punishment is a place where the unrighteous are cast into and can experience the torment day and night without rest forever.
  3. The place of eternal punishment is a place where there is no escape – no way out.
So, even though this place of torment is also described as “eternal destruction” or “the second death” we understand that the unrighteous continue to exist to be punished.

Blessings.

Serious sin, or mortal sin, is eternal if the person who committed the sin does not receive forgiveness from God by the time they die. The sin still exists, and is eternal. And it does not exist in time and space, just as God does not exist in time and space, He is eternal. So that person would be in an eternal hell by their own choosing because of their unforgiven, serious sin. They chose to turn away from God, and did not seek forgiveness up to, and including, the point of death.
Have you not heard of the Harrowing of Hell? Were those folks dead?

Romans 14:9
For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that
he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

Right, as if we aren't familiar with the apologetics of eternal conscious torment. (gag me with a pitch fork) Here are some that YOU probably haven't considered. (at the risk of creating a Bible versus Bible scenario) Consider the implications of these. (and marvel that they were left intact in a Damnationist biased text - the Bible) If these aren't sufficient, I have more.

1 John 2:2
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Romans 11:32
For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Titus 2:11
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,

1 Timothy 4:10
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

1 John 4:14
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

1 Corinthians 15:22
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Romans 5:18-19
Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,
so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,
so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Colossians 1:19-20
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Romans 3:24 NIV
and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Here's something to consider about the exaggerated language sometimes used in the Bible. Is Edom still smoking today? ("smoke will rise forever" - vs 10)

Edom
Edom was an ancient kingdom in Transjordan located between Moab to the northeast, the Arabah to the west and the Arabian Desert to the south and east. Most of its former territory is now divided between Israel and Jordan.

The destruction of Edom uses the same exaggerated language descriptions as hell in the Bible. Yet none of it lasted forever as it clearly says. And you can certainly pass through it today. For this prophecy to be taken literally it would need to be a smoking tar pit with a bypass to get around it.

Isaiah 34:8-11
For the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause.
9 Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
her dust into burning sulfur;
her land will become blazing pitch!
10 It will not be quenched night or day;
its smoke will rise forever.
From generation to generation it will lie desolate;
no one will ever pass through it again.
11 The desert owl and screech owl will possess it;
the great owl and the raven will nest there.
God will stretch out over Edom
the measuring line of chaos
and the plumb line of desolation.

Here is the longer answer.

This is a rather long, but interesting, citation about the restoration of Sodom and Gomorrah, Ammon and Moab, Elam, Egypt and Edom.

The bit about Edom is most interesting. It discusses the use of exaggerated language (to make a point) in biblical literature. Meaning, it is not to be taken literally.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The restoration of Sodom and Gomorrah from "eternal" fire
Jude 1:7
In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Zephaniah 2:9
Therefore, as surely as I live,”
declares the Lord Almighty,
the God of Israel,
“surely Moab will become like Sodom,
the Ammonites like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder them;
the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”
Ezekiel 16:53
“‘However, I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,
The restoration of Ammon and Moab
Zephaniah 2:9
Therefore, as surely as I live,”
declares the Lord Almighty,
the God of Israel,
“surely Moab will become like Sodom,
the Ammonites like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder them;
the survivors of my nation will inherit their land.”
Jeremiah 25:22, 27
21 Edom, Moab and Ammon; ...
27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.’
Jeremiah 49:6
“Yet afterward, I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites,”
declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 48:4, 47
4 Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.
47 “Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
Here ends the judgment on Moab.
The restoration of Elam
Jeremiah 25:25, 27
25 all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media; ...
27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.’
Jeremiah 49:39
“Yet I will restore the fortunes of Elam
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.
The restoration of Egypt
Jeremiah 25:19, 27
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people, ...
27 “Then tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:
Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.’
Ezekiel 29:13-14
“‘Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered.
14 I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt, the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly kingdom.
setst777 states: "What is everlasting contempt? Let us review the other Passages on this subject."
Laz replies: I saw that the Scriptures you posted after that statement did NOT bear on "everlasting contempt." Perhaps in a tangential way, but not directly. I interpret it this way - look at First Corinthians 3:15. Some suffer loss, yet are saved, and would that lead to a certain contempt from those who got rewards? I try to take a commonsense approach to interpreting Scriptures, while also keeping an eye out for (especially in the KJV) words that have been rendered in the English with more emotionally-charged words. I see those sorts of words all through your post, but try to find a balance between that and Scriptures stressing God's mercy and forgiveness. Think of Romans 6:7.
Have you not heard of the Harrowing of Hell? Were those folks dead?
For those who prefer a biblical answer.
Matthew 12:40
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Note: Christ was laid in an above ground tomb. Where is the heart of the earth?
1 Peter 3:18-20
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
Ephesians 4:8-10
This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”
9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that he also
descended to the lower, earthly regions?
10 He who descended is the very one who ascended
higher than all the heavens,
in order to fill the whole universe.)
1 Peter 4:6
For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
Romans 14:9
For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
Thank you for the replies. The first reply regarding Edom, Moab, the Sodomites, etc., all this relates to life on earth, and those who die, will no longer live on the earth.
Of course, many who were sinful in this life did not receive the punishment they deserved. That will take place in the Final Judgement.
The earthly judgments on the disobedient serve as an example, because the punishment they received while on earth foreshadows the eternal judgment at the end of time, when ALL the unrighteous will be raised and judged to receive eternal punishment.
Blessings
Can you explain why fire and brimstone pouring forth from heaven on Sodom to incinerate every living thing there was insufficient punishment? I'm pretty sure they got the message.
Yes, that is an earthly punishment.
If you think the Sodomites got their just punishment, can you explain why the Sodomites will be raised again on the Last Day to receive eternal torment, where, in that place, there is no rest day or night forever, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place?
I don't believe in eternal conscious torment. (or Annihilationism, for that matter) Someone else will have to defend those views.
Besides, "weeping and gnashing of teeth" describes a conversion experience to me. Beyond that, we are dealing with exaggerated language. And i think the biblical texts are biased toward Damnationism. (the Traditional view)
Actually, everyone goes to "hell". (as defined below)
Mark 9:49
Everyone will be salted with fire.
Malachi 3:2
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.
Right, as if we aren't familiar with the apologetics of eternal conscious torment. (gag me with a pitch fork) Here are some that YOU probably haven't considered. (at the risk of creating a Bible versus Bible scenario) Consider the implications of these. (and marvel that they were left intact in a Damnationist biased text - the Bible) If these aren't sufficient, I have more.
1 John 2:2
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Romans 11:32
For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.
Titus 2:11
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
1 Timothy 4:10
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
1 John 4:14
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
1 Corinthians 15:22
For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
Romans 5:18-19
Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,
so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,
so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
Colossians 1:19-20
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Romans 3:24 NIV
and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
God’s grace is offered to all through the Gospel, but the Scriptures clearly teach that a person appropriates that saving grace to himself by faith in Lord Jesus.
  • The ransom was paid for all (1 Timothy 2:6),
  • God desires all to be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4),
  • and to have mercy on all (Romans 11:32).
We appropriate, or gain access to, that grace, mercy, and ransom to ourselves by faith (John 3:16). That is the Gospel Covenant, so:
Not all are ransomed
Not all are saved
Not all receive mercy
But those who believe, appropriate to themselves, or gain access, that saving power and grace of God:
Romans 5:1-2 (WEB) 1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; 2 through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 1:16-17 (WEB) 16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Greek. 17 For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.” [Habakkuk 2:4]
These are your thoughts and opinions.
The Passages you quoted shed no light on the Scriptural legitimacy of your views regarding the Judgment
Revelation 22:12-17 (WEB) 12 “Behold, I come quickly. My reward is with me, to repay to each man according to his work. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 Blessed are those who do his commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
Lol. Glad tidings of great joy to you too friend.
I wish everyone blessings. That is my desire and hope for all. But that blessing will only rest upon those who are worthy to receive it.
Regarding the Judgment, keep in mind that God is not mocked. God will repay.
Galatians 6:7-9 (WEB) 7 Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we do not give up.
Hebrews 10:30 (WEB)
30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance belongs to me. I will repay,” says the Lord. [Deuteronomy] 32:35 Again, “The Lord will judge HIS people.” [Deuteronomy 32:36; Psalm 135:14] 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Hebrews 12:25 (WEB)
25 See that you do not refuse him who speaks. For if they didn’t escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,
James 1:12-16 (WEB)
12 Blessed is a person who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
Can you explain why fire and brimstone pouring forth from heaven on Sodom to incinerate every living thing there was insufficient punishment? I'm pretty sure they got the message.
Those abominable sodomites deserve to be woken up and fried again, just for good measure.
It's like these guys think God is the devil, but grossly meaner.
You've got it upside down and inside out friend. Salvation is a gift to those most unworthy of it. That's what grace is all about.
Inheritance, crowns of righteousness, that's the work part.
God is love. That's your starting point. Fatherly love so incomprehensibly deep and devoted that it overcomes all resistance, destroys all enemies, the last is death. So life prevails, and in abundance, the life of Christ in all, so every knee will bow and tongue confess in worship, God all in all.
