In your opinions, what are essential doctrines one must believe and hold onto to be considered a Christian and thus be eternally secure and saved?

Is it, believing in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ? If one denies the resurrection or death of Christ can one be saved?

Is it, believing that faith alone in Christ alone by the grace of God is enough to save? Like for an example, having faith in Christ and trusting that he alone can save them and that the cross is sufficient enough to save.

Is it, believing in the doctrines that set Christians apart? This question is partially to do with my previous question but it goes deeper. Like, believing that Christians are eternally secure, believing the truth that God died for his sheep and that he has preset the lives of people around the globe.

Is it, accepting the Nicene or Apostles creed?

Is it, being baptized, partaking of the Eucharist, or any other ritual based salvation system?

Is it our works, or based anything on what we do rather than what Christ has done for us?

Just, what is required for salvation in your opinions? I think I know the answer to my own questions, I just wanted to check the opinions of other Christians. I obviously left some details out but these are the main questions floating around the church today.

As has been pointed out already, being a “Christian” is not equivalent to being eternally secure and saved.

Faith is the only thing that is eternal that we posses. Everything is Gods doing - Faith knows this.

To understand Salvation you have to understand why it is we need Salvation. When you understand why we need Salvation everything else falls into place.

Propping one doctrine or belief up over another just leads to confusion. Salvation isn’t a doctrine - Salvation is Jesus the Christ.

Acts 16:30-31 (ESV) Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Your question is as old as Mankind. Salvation has never been about what we do, it has always been about what God has done.

Revelation 20:12-15 (ESV) And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Everyone is judged on what they have done, but having your name in the book of life is never said to be based on what you do - it has always been based on what God has done.

Make sure the doctrine for your salvation is based on Paul's letters, from Romans to Philemon.

It is believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, came in the flesh, died for the sins of humanity on the cross, and was resurrected the 3rd day. It is believing he ascended 40 days later and believing in the Holy Spirit. It is loving your God with all your body soul and mind. It is getting baptized and repenting for your sins and every time you realize you have sinned, and helping people in need of food, shelter, and those in prison. It is keeping Gods laws the best we can and spending time in prayer. It is spreading the good news and telling people of Christ. It is refusing the mark of the beast and loving Jesus Christ more than yourself and being ready to die for Him at any given time because life to us isn't worth living if we cannot have Jesus as our Lord and Savior and we will bow for no other.

* and even then, salvation is a gift given once Jesus has searched the heart and mind of the individual person, and seen what kind of faith they have in Him. Nothing can guarantee salvation. You have to find out when you get there. All we can do is the best we can to be ready if we are saved so that lack of baptism or something else does not hold us back. Even those who never knew Him have been saved on their deathbed with true repentance so it is just up to Him.

That is just what I believe, that is why I am not backing it with scriptures. If you are a Christian, I don't need to add scriptures. You already know. .

You can count the essentials of the New Covenant faith on one hand.

1. The virgin birth of Christ

2. The sinless life of Christ

3. His perfect and final sacrifice for sin at Calvary (John 19:30, Hebrews 10:16-18)

4. He demonstrated his defeat of death through His resurrection

5. His future Second Coming to make all things right, as they were before the fall of Adam. (Acts of the Apostles 3:21)

Sadly, many of those who call themselves Christians today have abandoned some of the essentials found above.

These are the essentials of the New Covenant faith? There is nothing here about faith at all. These are events in Jesus' life, but you have omitted our role in the New Covenant.

These events are His redemptive acts in which we are saved. Our role is to know & be faithful to our Lord & savior.

Is the Christian faith built upon what you can do, or upon what He has already done?

  • For people who don't believe there is a God or that Jesus was not necessarily real, then nothing is core, it is more of a tradition or a spiritual practice that people participate in for self edification.
  • For those who do believe there is a God, Jesus was real, and what we know he taught is accurate, then the teachings of Jesus, and his disciples are core. Where doctrines are not 100% explicit, we end up with multiple denominations. Most Christians accept most of the "splits" as non core (i.e. baptists and non-baptists can get along ok)
So you can get an accurate answer to this question by looking at what theological lines denominations split on, and which denominational splits are still accepted as Christian or not.

Many denominations have been built upon the battle between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, which began in Acts chapter 15 and continues to the present time.

Act 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:

Paul said in (Rom. 3:23-25) (v.23) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (v.24) Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (v.25) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.

So the bible tells you to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:36-38). And by doing so you come up under his precious blood and then you are saved from your sins that are past, not present or future sins but for sins that are past. We were all locked under death by Adam’s sin, even the second death.

But when Jesus became (he was God in the beginning) man and died for the sins of the world, he gave us access back to the tree of life (himself) which Adam had caused us to lose. That’s what grace is, our free gift our access back to the tree of life but that’s another lesson for another time. So by coming under the blood of Jesus you are saved from your past sins. And if you are saved now, it is on a day to day basis. Because for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 23:3), and if you continue to live you will sin again. It is the willful sinning that you need to put in check.

They're contained in the ancient Creeds of the Church. The Apostles', the Nicene, and the Athanasian creeds
