Let me use a biblical illustration. In Matthew 25, when Jesus talks about separating the sheep and the goats, notice that He doesn’t separate them by what they do, but by who they are. It’s not the good works that made the sheep sheep. They did good works because they were sheep.
Those who are His practice righteousness.
God himself identifies the sheep as those who listen to and follow Lord Jesus. These are the sheep the Father gives to the Son.
John 10:27-29 (WEB) 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father who has given them to me is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
The ones whom the Father gives to the Son, those who are guaranteed eternal life, are the ones who hear His voice and follow Him. Those who believe, demonstrated by hearing and following Jesus, are identified as the sheep that the Father gives to the Son. That is the condition to receive the promise – the guarantee of eternal life.
Matthew 25 starts out with the Parable of the Ten Virgins, who both believed in Jesus and were waiting for His return. But five of them did not remain ready to meet their Lord, and so God rejected them.
Matthew 25 continues with another Parable of the Master how entrusts talents to his own servants. Two of His servants invested wisely, but the last servant was lazy wicked and kept the talent hidden for safe keeping.
In each of the above cases, the virgins and servants of the Lord all knew the Lord, but they were not faithful to carry out the Lord's will.
Then comes the description of the Judgment. We see that God judges our faith by our actions, for the doers of the Word are those who demonstrate a Gospel Faith in Lord Jesus.
Doer of the Word
A true Gospel Faith is a new life of righteousess and love, demonstrated by good works.
Acts 26:19-20 (WEB) 19 “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that
they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.
Matthew 7:21-28 (WEB)
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but
he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 28:19-20 (WEB) 19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20
teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
James 1:21-22 (WEB)
21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive
with humility the implanted word, which is
able to save your souls.
22 But
be doers of the word, and
not only hearers,
deluding your own selves.
