GOP Senators Introduce Retaliatory Legislation Against MLB for Leaving Georgia

Three Republican senators announced on Tuesday they were introducing legislation to remove Major League Baseball’s (MLB) special antitrust exemption over the organization’s decision to move its All-Star Game away from Atlanta, Georgia.

MLB made that decision in response to a new law passed by Republican lawmakers in the state that imposes restrictive voting rules, particularly because the legislation makes voting especially more burdensome for Black and Brown voters.

Using ironic language lambasting “woke” companies involving themselves in politics — an action Republicans don’t seem to mind as much when it comes to corporate contributions for their own campaigns — Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) held a press briefing to announce their intention to declare MLB a monopoly.

That's right -- speak against the government, and they'll try to punish you for it.

Thoughts?

I guess they are really ticked off about that All star game. That is really petty and childish. It will never pass.

Of course it won't. They're posturing to their base, nothing more.

And it's precisely because it won't that this will be quickly forgiven and forgotten by corporate America. If this had happened back when the GOP controlled Congress, they never would have dared even suggest such a law, because if it passed, those businesses would never contribute another dime.

So on top of petty and childish, add cowardly.

I hope corporate America does not forget.

The GOP will have to buy them off with another deficit-exploding tax cut.

Well it didn't work the first time. trump lost despite the massive tax cut for the rich.

.
As if the action of MLB was not itself petty and childish itself and OBTW based on a false narrative. But let's just ignore that and continue to bash the GOP. I mean just how horrible that people be required to actually go to the polls to vote as they have since we have had elections. Let us also not forget that there are scores of things which require a picture ID. How "racist" that we should require an ID to vote.

The narrative is not false. The Georgia laws are more repression against people of color and MLB is taking a stand, as they should. Did you notice that the Masters honored Lee Elder as the first black man to play in the tournament? Good for both organizations to do what is right.

trump lost the state and the voters elected two democrats to the US Senate; the GOP can't handle that, so now more Jim Crow laws result.

Why can't you face facts?

Rubbish! Prove it, quote me exactly what you claim is "repression against people of color?"
Why can't you face facts.
Never mind here is is. Show me what is racist.
Gov. Brian Kemp signed the bill on March 31. Certain provisions will go into effect on July 1:
  • Special ballots will be created for nonpartisan elections
  • Ballots must be printed in black and white ink on security paper
  • A cutoff date of 11 days before a primary, general election or runoff election for mail-in ballot applications
  • A deadline for the issuance of absentee ballots at least 25 days before a federal primary, general election or special election or 22 days before a municipal general election or primary
  • A Georgia state driver's license number, ID card number, date of birth and the last four digits of a social security number or another approved form of identification must be printed on the outside of an absentee ballot
  • Conditions for rejecting absentee ballots if certain requirements are not met.
  • Georgia voting law: Here's what to know about the new election rules
What about early votin

I think the mlb made the wrong move here, but I also don't agree with the republicans doing this. Corporations and organizations have the right to do as they please with boycotting and such whether we agree with them or not.

Explain again why MLB deserves to be punished.

They don't. But neither do bakers, or florists, or photographers who don't want to do business with people they don't agree with.

On what basis are you drawing that conclusion?

The number of lawsuits against Christian businesses because they won't do something which violates their faith. e.g. a baker being sued because he will not decorate a cake with a gay theme.

First you explain why Georgia deserves to be punished by MLB. Still waiting for the part of GAs new law that is racist.

Remind me again of the difference between a gay theme and a black theme?

Don't let the GOP hear you say that; they can cancel MLB; think what they'll do to you if you don't shut up and obey.
