• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I'm battling myself with fears of committing the unforgivable sin. The forums here have offered me immense support. However, I am still struggling to function each day and considering starting medication. My husband says I need psychiatric care at this point

Can definitely help in some cases. Try for 6 months, if it doesn't help or things are worse, you have the rest of your life to not be on them, and that's easy enough to do.

What do you think the unforgivable sin is?

Attributing Jesus to the evil one with verbal words
Many people hate God and don't know it. They have an idol they think is Jesus. Are you sure you have the right, Jesus? If you blaspheme an idol, it's to be expected.

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” 1 John 3:9 (KJV 1900)

Not a Christian but I am a psychotherapist. Depression can be effectively treated with CBT and a family of meds called SSRIs.

Depression will respond to such treatments so you would be doing yourself a massive disservice if you did not give it a go.

I can point you in the direction of some online resources that I use with my patients, if you like.

If you are asking from a biblical perspective Luke in the bible was a medical doctor. Medicine is a blessing and under the direction of medical professionals is the way to go.

Some good advice has been given. I have been a Christian since LBJ was president. I served two tours in Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot '68, '72-'73. I was shot down 5 times, injured once. My helicopter was armed with a minigun which fired 4000 bullets a minute. I encountered enemy soldiers many times and fired the minigun many times.
I was okay for many years until one day in 2011 I was googling and saw something online which, I can only describe as, "made my head explode." After a few years of counseling and meds I came back to almost normal.

Matthew 9:12
12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Mark 2:17 Luke 5:31

As a fellow female I can relate. Sometimes depression is due to a chemical imbalance in the body and antidepressants can help balance you out.

I would say give medication a try. I was worried that it would change my personality somehow and I wouldn't be Me any more, but it was the opposite. My head slowed down, the bad thoughts calmed down, and I actually got myself back. The creative, happy fun me who can function and make clear judgements. You may use medication just for a short time, or could find that when you stop, the negative symptoms come back and you need it longer term to keep balanced. Diabetics use insulin. Some people take blood pressure tablets. Using medication to treat a real condition in our flawed earthly bodies is not sinful. Hang in there, you are precious and important, and have people around you who love you. Xx

If you broke your leg would you stay at home untill it healed, or would you accept the help and medication given by a hospital?

Mental illness is no different to having a broken leg. Something is wrong and needs fixing.

Unforgiven sin etc. Only Christians worry about doing this an Christians are the one group who will not commit it.

If your mental illness causes you to think you have committed it, remember a sick mind has caused it, not you and Jesus knows all about your illness and will no more condem you for what a damaged mind does than he will condem a bed bound sick person for not attending church.

My wife takes them and it helps a great deal, Listen to your husband, my wife had irrational thoughts like you do and the meds help with that.

I personally do not use them. I am concerned about them being a mask for root causes of depression. Also, one of the few thing that makes me feel good about myself is frequent blood donation, and I am not willing to risk being eligible for that for a few minutes of artificial happy feelings. With that said, I would never dissuade anyone else from using them if the need arose.

I love your post, it's almost exactly the opposite of how I feel! Just goes to show how personal the decision is for each person and how we have to find what works for us and to be kind to others who are just trying to get through each day. For me, the root cause of my anxiety disorder seems to be chemical, so taking medication actually addresses the root cause. Also, when I am stable, I can then work on the non biological factors. I miss donating blood, but for me, it is the bad feelings that are artificial, and I'm willing to trade them for donating!

Have you ever considered seeking the Holy Spirit
Within the Christian community, what are your opinions on taking antidepressants?

Have you sought counsel from the Holy spirit and asked why is it you are feeling depressed what lies are you believing. Our life is either influenced by the word of God which is life or influence by the lies
of the devil which is death
My next question is how much time are you spending and prayer how much time are you spending in the word of God how much time are you spending in praise and worship.
We are told to give no place to the devil Ephesians 4:27.
For every negative stronghold, there’s a powerful way to surround it with opposite truth from God.
If you are struggling with a stronghold of depression, surround it with hope.
If you are struggling with a stronghold of rejection, surround it with acceptance from Abba.
If you are struggling with a stronghold of unresolved anger, surround it with forgiveness.
If you are struggling with a stronghold of fear, surround it with the knowledge of God’s love.
If you are struggling with a stronghold of failure, surround it with the victory of the resurrection!
Once you’ve identified a stronghold, go to the Scripture, and study the opposite truth from God.
If the stronghold is rejection, study all that the Bible says about God’s acceptance.
Use a concordance or a chain bible or topical bible.
Then surround that stronghold with the word of God!
Listen, once the enemy sees he’s surrounded by humble submission, praise,
and the word of God, his resistance will quickly weaken, and if he isn’t gone already!

People on antidepressants can donate blood without issue. It's fine if they're not for you but to describe them as providing "a few minutes of artificial happy feelings" shows it might be time to educate yourself on such things if you want to post to someone who imo would benefit enormously from them. Props for giving blood though btw. My hubby donates blood and plasma regularly, I'm unable because I don't weigh enough.

You don't have to live like this Jo! I strongly recommend a trip to the doctor to talk about the intrusive thoughts.

I personally didn't have the greatest experience with them. They helped briefly, but not in the way that I wanted it to. You definitely can't solely rely on them to help you overcome depression though. You'll still have to go for counseling/therapy. Overcoming depression has a lot to do with how you think and teaching yourself to unlearn those things and relearn healthy ways of thinking. I don't shame anyone who wants to try them because everyone's recovery is different.

There are a lot of restrictions on blood donation here. I'd rather not risk it.

I was put on an antidepressant because of unmanageable anxiety over having an irrational fear of going to hell many years ago. The doctors told me my anxiety was due to a chemical imbalance my brain. I'd say the medication slowly fixed the problem. I still get brief spells of unwarranted anxiety over salvation, but I'm able to get a handle on it pretty quickly.
