I’m convinced Bakker doesn’t believe a word of what he says anymore, if he ever did, and is at this point seeing how far out he can get before a significant number of the marks get smart to it.

Hmmm... I'm not so sure he doesn't believe his own schtick, honestly.

Even L. Ron Hubbard believed in his own self made beliefs up until he died. He'd often just make up the rules for his religion on the fly, too. Not only that, but even before he created scientology, he was quoted saying "You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion," so his intentions were pretty clear...

It seems that even when something starts as a scam, even the hoodwinkers get hoodwinked over time. Self delusion is an assured thing when we surround ourselves with folks who all agree with us and never challenge a word we say or have a dissenting opinion, it seems.
