Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell warned big businesses they would face "serious consequences" after accusing them of employing "economic blackmail" in attempts to influence voting laws as the backlash over Georgia's elections law that imposes voting restrictions intensifies.

At an event in his home state Monday, McConnell said he "found it completely discouraging to find a bunch of corporate CEOs getting in the middle of politics."

"My advice to the corporate CEOs of America is to stay out of politics," he added.

McConnell's statement comes after he has previously supported businesses involvement in politics, including backing the US Supreme Court's 2010 decision in the Citizens United case, which allowed big businesses more power to spend freely in federal elections. In 2014, he spoke out against Democrats' attempts to allow Congress to set limits on corporate campaign spending in federal elections, calling it a threat to basic speech rights.

For a long time, the GOP has supported the idea that money is free speech, particularly when it meant corporations dropping large sacks of free speech into GOP coffers and superPACs to promote conservative candidates and laws. Suddenly there is great uproar about corporations spending (and not spending) their free speech in ways the GOP doesn't like. Boo. Hoo.

Well, if you can use money to get votes . . . how about government-issued checks with Donald's name on them?

When I got a check with Donald Trump's name on it, I first thought may be he was trying to buy my vote. But I do not know of any anti-Donald people complaining about money with his name on it being dropped in their laps :) lololololololol

And no one, apparently, at least in mainstream reporting, accused him of trying to buy the election - - not that I read or heard.

Do you think that people had to have Trump's self serving publicity stunt explained to them? Seriously?

^^^That was only Trump's cabinet, and I left out a couple people who were Senior VP's, not C-suites executives. Here are a few other popular Republican executives:

Well, I think it is common knowledge how numerous individuals have held Donald to be close to and even above question; so you might have a problem trying to get them to accept your explanation.

I think each person can have a unique way of seeing things. Therefore, I do not assume how each person reacted to having Donald's name on his or her check.

But . . . even if people felt he was trying to buy their vote . . . how many of them do you think refused to accept the money?? :)

By the way . . . even if I have not considered Donald to be on the level, still I did not assume the name on the check had to be a vote buying scheme. I considered it possible, though. But I did not ever hear him broadcasting how he had given everyone money and so they should vote for him.

What might have happened, for all I know, is the Democrats might have wanted the checks, but they had to compromise by having Donald's name on them. But I don't know.

Democrats, too, can do things which effect people's pocketbooks, so they can get votes . . . right?

Is there a president's name on the present checks going out . . . by the way?

Probably not. Except for whatsisface, the signatures are traditionally those of the Secretary of the Treasury.

The REPUBLICANS don't like corporations flexing political influence? :)

They are continuing to put themselves in a serious hole, being supported only by Trump, his base, and those corporations that support them.

Democratic counties produce 71% of GDP. Corporations and the rich are no longer all Republicans. Lots and lots of corporations moved to support Obama and stayed.

As a Democrat, I'm fine with Republicans delaying their introspection as long as possible, hopefully until after the 2024 election. pre-Trump Republican principles have the support of a large portion of America, perhaps close to a majority. That Reagan coalition is long gone.

In the last 8 elections they've won the popular vote once and that was by a tiny margin.

The Right to Vote is the Cornerstone of our Democracy.
We believe every American should have a voice in our democracy and that voting should be safe and accessible to all voters. We stand in solidarity with voters 一 and with the Black executives and leaders at the helm of this movement 一 in our nonpartisan commitment to equality and democracy. If our government is going to work for all of us, each of us must have equal freedom to vote and elections must reflect the will of voters.

Our elections are not improved when lawmakers impose barriers that result in longer lines at the polls or that reduce access to secure ballot dropboxes. There are hundreds of bills threatening to make voting more difficult in dozens of states nationwide. We call on elected leaders in every state capitol and in Congress to work across the aisle and ensure that every eligible American has the freedom to easily cast their ballot and participate fully in our democracy.

If Leader McConnell is so against CEO's being involved in politics, that mean's he's going to refuse all corporate campaign contributions and demand all public officials who are former business executives resign correct?
If so he should probably look no further than his better half.

From a business perspective, why would American businesses want their brand to be seen supporting a political party under the control of a dictatorial, narcissistic septuagenarian closely associated with those "white-supremacist" groups and "domestic terrorists" who stormed Capitol Hill on January 6th?

Apparently America's business community was less than convinced by the President's 0-50 record in the courts that despite the best efforts of his legal Dream Team," failed to confirm his accusations of widespread voter fraud!

Given that these unverifiable accusations have served as the premise for the "voter suppression" legislation being forwarded by Republicans attempting to find favor with Trump and his supporters, America business leaders question as to why the limiting of access to the ballot box is in the best interests of the nation!
