The editorial is and isn’t right. It suggests that there would be 3 Democrats snd two Republicans. The law says two and two, with one independent. The problem is it’s almost certain that an independent would want to limit gerrymandering and schemes to limit voting. So they would likely side with Democrats currently. Of course it’s not impossible that at some time Democrats would want to play games with elections. They’ve certainly done it in the past. In that case one would hope an independent would oppose them.

Consider the substance rather than what someone else thinks of a particular media outlet. Make the effort. There have been some serious charges regarding election integrity.
The substance of the opinion piece? Very well. What facts or arguments do they bring that you would like to discuss?

Fact-checking is a required skill to have in the internet age. I do NOT care about the politics, I care about the factual reporting. I want the truth, not my ears being tickled any more. Years ago, I have made the same mistake of believing everything on the internet, and have gotten seriously hurt by it as a result.
(John 8:31-32, Mark 13:20-23, Matthew 24:22-25, 2 Peter 2:17-19, 2 Timothy 3:1-17, 4:2-5)

During COVID-19 and American political instability, what are you hoping to achieve with this?

There have been some serious charges regarding election integrity.

If you have any hard evidence of election fraud, please present it. It can be on any news sources, as long as they have High Factual Reporting. Please and thank you.

This site does a pretty good job of breaking it down, and doesn't just slap smaller right wing sites:

CNN barely gets a higher rating rating, medium, which fox news shares.

How is the independent person selected?

Let's pretend that D Trump is in power, he is putting the screws in on all Republicans in charge of the election process in their states.
Could this force Republican officials who don't care about fairness but instead only care about pleasing Trump, could they then select a known far right person as the "independant", or perhaps someone that owes Trump a favour, perhaps Roger Stone who got pardoned, could he be appointed as the independant?

Here is a quote from the article
"H.R. 1 would quadruple down on everything that caused the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election to be contested so adamantly."

But as we know, the 2020 presidential election was contested as political theatre. Nothing of substance went through the courts. And as Sydney Powell said, no reasonable person would have agreed with her claims of voter fraud.

BTW, the title alone of this thread gives away the political bias of this thread.

Good question. As far as I know, "independent" in the USA means "neither democrat nor republican". So a member of the American Nazi Party (yes, that's a thing) or the Communist Party USA would qualify. Right?

Always diversify the fact-checkers. If their fact-checking is consistent with each other, then I can assume it must be the truth.

If you are distrustful of fact-checking sources, then what is your plan to filter out the lies from the truth in online news sources?

We slip into ad hominems rather than discussing the actual legislation. Here's the ACTUAL bill...lets focus on that.

Text - H.R.1 - 117th Congress (2021-2022): For the People Act of 2021

Section 1005 violates the 10th amendment.

Section 1015 is an issue. Automatic registration without a check and balance for true and accurate metadata on the voter is a serious issue and ripe for fraud. It even explicitly states that a voter would not have to be a citizen to vote! No wonder they push illegal immigration as they do.

Section 1621 will solidify any efforts for one party to keep and maintain control via mail fraud.

How is striking the semicolon at the end of a sentence a violation of the 10th amendment?

What part of 1015 are you talking about? It appears to simply keep people from being able to be charged if they report they are not eligible to vote but were added through an automatic process.

Section 1621 will solidify any efforts for one party to keep and maintain control via mail fraud.

How?

Protection for errors != "illegals" can vote.

Blatant lie, since there was never any proof presented of any mail fraud aside from fact-free whining.

"and inserting the following..." read that part too.

There should be no automatic process.

Nullification of voter ID laws (also a violation of the 10th)

“(A) PROHIBITING IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENT AS CONDITION OF OBTAINING BALLOT.—A State may not require an individual to provide any form of identification as a condition of obtaining an absentee ballot, except that nothing in this paragraph may be construed to prevent a State from requiring a signature of the individual or similar affirmation as a condition of obtaining an absentee ballot.
