The Biden administration struggled during its first face-to-face meeting with communist China this week, which happened on U.S. soil, as the Chinese turned what was supposed to be an affair only lasting several minutes into a “public blowup” that lasted more than an hour.

The meeting was supposed to get both sides to the table to set the tone for relations between the two under President Joe Biden’s new Democrat administration. It was expected that the U.S. was going to bring up issues involving China, like human rights and its increasing aggression in numerous domains, but what was not expected was that China would mock the U.S. on U.S. soil. Many critics were stunned by the level of aggression that China showed to the U.S. and the weak response of the Biden administration.
This spat turned a four-minute photo-op into a diplomatic spat that lasted more than an hour.

Not what they had come to expect from a U.S. president...

Donald Trump Kowtows To China, COVID-19, On Tibet Issue
Outgoing Lame Duck President Donald Trump Kowtows To China, COVID-19, On Tibet Issue

The atmosphere was expected to be tense because days earlier the U.S. had slapped sanctions on China for Beijing's crackdown on political freedoms in Hong Kong. But the contentious on-camera exchanges that followed were a clear departure from the light pleasantries traditionally offered before diplomatic discussions.

Blinken opened his remarks by saying Beijing needed to return to a rules-based system, lambasting China for violating international norms through their crackdown on Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang, cyber attacks against the U.S. and “economic coercion.”

“Each of these actions threaten the rules-based order that maintains global stability," Blinken said. "Our intent is to be direct about our concerns, direct about our priorities, with the goal of a more clear-eyed relationship between our countries moving forward.”

Top U.S., China diplomats have public spat as Alaska summit opens

Yep. Going to be an entirely different administration.

Well, it seems the United States representatives started right off with criticizing China; so then the Chinese had a thing or two to say back. And the Chinese said the democracy in America is not so great, after all, if minorities have been getting treated badly, I think they could mean.

It's seldom a good idea when starting talks to lead with your strongest criticism. Lay a little groundwork first. Build a little rapport. Relationship makes the tough conversations go easier. So that's on us. I suspect Biden's team felt like it needed to show toughness on the China issue to prove they are not soft as alleged.

And as for China's retort, what did they say about us that is not correct? It's kind of tough to talk about someone else's human rights violations when you have your own, isn't it?

Even Trump didn't round up black people, make them submit to body measurements to make tracking them easier, shut down their churches, or imprison any of them who seemed likely to criticize him. Yes, he probably wanted to, but that's why our country works better than theirs. The law wouldn't let him.

They were used to Trump kowtowing rather than criticize their abuse of religious and national minorities in China.

It's going to be a different administration, now.

I guess this undermines the narrative that Biden is going to go easy on China and overlook their human rights abuses.

Probably not. But they should at least think ahead and play those stories on different days.

It certainly undermines the narrative that China or other world powers have any respect for Biden.

Let's see him actually DO something along those lines before we get all gooey over his supposed accomplishments.

Because they were upset that he called them out on human rights abuses? C'mon.

He's already done better than his predecessor.
October 2019:
This month, we learned that U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly promised that he would tone down criticism of Beijing’s repressive approach to protests in Hong Kong to protect trade talks. Far from getting tough on China, Trump once again deferred to China’s leader, Xi Jinping, on his handling of human rights issues to try to reach a comprehensive trade “deal” that, despite marginal progress last week, is still nowhere in sight.
Trump’s Devastating Silence on China’s Human Rights Abuses

Which is, to be fair, a rather low bar. But still an improvement.

Maybe China worked so hard to get their client, Biden, into the White House because she knew how much fun it would be to humiliate him...without any fear of retaliation, either.

That story crashed and burned some time ago...

Trump Admin’s Claims of Chinese Election Interference Were Bogus: U.S. Intel
A declassified intelligence assessment from the Director of National Intelligence says that China did not try to interfere in the 2020 election, despite a barrage of statements from the Trump administration last year. In the run up to the election, former Trump national security officials, from national security adviser Robert O’Brien to then Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, accused China of meddling. But a new assessment released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence claimed that the intel community has assessed with “high confidence” that Beijing “did not deploy interference efforts” and did not view a particular election outcome as “being advantageous enough to risk getting caught meddling.”

...
The intelligence community also assessed that “Russian President Putin authorized... influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party, supporting former President Trump” as well as undermining confidence in the election and sowing division within the US.

I'm surprised those guys are still trying to peddle it. They aren't stupid, but they hope you are.

The big issue, that has the Chinese really unhappy, is Biden's upcoming reversal of Trump's retreat from East Asia. Congress refused to go along with Trump's intended evacuation of troops from South Korea, after Kelly told him that it could not be, but he did what he could to pull back from that area. China invested in some lucrative deals for Trump's family and considered it money well spent.

Biden looks poised to ruin everything for them.

I suspect it is much bigger than money.

It's not about respect for Biden, it's about respect for the US. We have issues we are not doing great at dealing with. If they call us out, I get it. But, for the record, China is horrible. So, hypocrisy all around, I say.

I don't understand why we came out swinging like that. What is the end game? Are we getting in a fighting stance? I get calling them out on their horrendous human rights violations. But did we think we didn't have any of our own problems, that everyone knows, to address? I don't understand the administration's thinking on this. Virtue signalling? That was a bad idea. What are we trying to do there?
