The bishop is the latest in a series of German prelates publicly calling for changes in the Church’s stance on homosexuality.

MAINZ, Germany — A German Catholic bishop has publicly defended his support for a book of blessings and rites for homosexual unions.

Bishop Peter Kohlgraf of Mainz also suggested that Catholics with homosexual inclinations cannot all be expected to live chastely and the Church should adopt a pastoral approach that acknowledges this.

“Quite a few people who have homosexual attractions belong to the Church and are truly pious in the best sense of the word,” Bishop Peter Kohlgraf of Mainz wrote in a column for his diocesan newspaper that was also publishedon the diocese’s website, with the headline “Don’t ignore science,” on Feb. 3.

“As to the demand for chastity: what does it mean from the perspective of people who experience same-sex attraction? I think that few of them would consider this demand as tactful and respectful, because — as the Catechism also knows — this inclination is not self-selected.”

Can I stop living chastely too? Because I can't ignore science or something?

What about adultery? Should people be expected to remain faithful through the ups and downs of marriage?
This bishop is obviously going against the teaching of God and should be reprimanded.

"The ultimate lesson is that science isn't special---at least not anymore. It's no longer a calling, it's a career. Science is as corruptible a human activity as any other. Its practitioners aren't saints, they're human beings, and they do what human beings do---lie, cheat, steal from one another, sue, hide data, fake data, overstate their own importance, and denigrate opposing views unfairly. That's human nature. It isn't going to change."

Science has become a cult. I love science but it as stated above is extremely corrupt on many levels.

I agree, Michie. Science has been taken hostage by too many people pushing agendas; I think this cartoon sums it up nicely:

How about excommunicating the entire german church? It would be fitting enough for all those *pretending to be protestant ministers clergy*. My answer to this "bishop" is: if you aint catholic why wont you bless us with your resignation?
Go ahead please, just join some random sect of your own liking and leave the rest of us alone...

It is simple. Scripture shows us what’s expected .

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

We are all called to chastity. Sex is not a necessary function of the human body, and it is given to us by God for reproduction, not for sterile pleasure. As it says in 2Peter

[11] Whereas angels who are greater in strength and power, bring not against themselves a railing judgment. [12] But these men, as irrational beasts, naturally tending to the snare and to destruction, blaspheming those things which they know not, shall perish in their corruption, [13] Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you: [14] Having eyes full of adultery and of sin that ceaseth not: alluring unstable souls, having their heart exercised with covetousness, children of malediction: [15] Leaving the right way they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam of Bosor, who loved the wages of iniquity,

[11] "A railing judgment": That is, they use no railing, nor cursing sentence; not even in their conflicts with the evil angels. See St. Jude, ver. 9.

[13] "The delights of a day": that is, the short delights of this world, in which they place all their happiness.

I wish bishops would teach the faith, rather than trying to appeal to the world. Their responsibility is for souls, not the pleasures of the world. It all started back in 1968, when Canada went against Pope Paul VI. They should have been excommunicated due to the Winnipeg statement. We are bearing the fruit of the acceptance of contraception in the world

I hate to say it but I'm getting 1517 vibes all over again.

I feel your frustration, but schism is never the answer. Christ founded a church and promised that the gates of hell would not prevail. We need not follow the error of Luther. The German Bishops are in grave error, and the Vatican has said that homosexual unions cannot be blessed by the church.
We need to be more forceful in stating why they are in error. It is not heterosexual good, homosexual bad. It comes down to the sexual act is meant for procreation, period. Any other use of the sexual act is fornication, of which we are told to flee. Homosexual acts are never capable of procreation, and therefore never licit and cannot ever be blessed. Heterosexual acts whose goal is sterility cannot be blessed either, although they can be hidden in a marital relationship, God sees all.
It is said that there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Contraception is one such way. we only need to look at the 60 million dead babies and collapse of western civilization

Well, my wife and I have followed Church teaching concerning contraception. But we are now beyond childbearing age. Short of a miracle there will be no more children. Are you telling me we need to stop having sex? I would otherwise agree with you about schism and about homosexual acts.

you are married, and in the church I believe? If fertility has ceased in a marriau would not be deliberately thwarting God's will. I would recommend reading the Catechism of the Catholic church

2362 "The acts in marriage by which the intimate and chaste union of the spouses takes place are noble and honorable; the truly human performance of these acts fosters the self-giving they signify and enriches the spouses in joy and gratitude."145 Sexuality is a source of joy and pleasure:
The Creator himself . . . established that in the [generative] function, spouses should experience pleasure and enjoyment of body and spirit. Therefore, the spouses do nothing evil in seeking this pleasure and enjoyment. They accept what the Creator has intended for them. At the same time, spouses should know how to keep themselves within the limits of just moderation.146

there are also readings from the church fathers that explain things further
CHURCH FATHERS: On Marriage and Concupiscence, Book I (Augustine)

I used to believe in birth control, and thought that the church was wrong and Humana Vitae was not infallible. It is only through the mercy of God that I have come to the truth of church teaching. What convinced me is what Christ said,
. [23] And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; for he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall save it. [25] For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, and cast away himself?

What is [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]? It is a pleasure of the world. Do I desire the pleasure of the world, or eternal life with Our Lord?

also

[5] Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is the service of idols.

[6] For which things the wrath of God cometh upon the children of unbelief, [7] In which you also walked some time, when you lived in them. [8] But now put you also all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your mouth. [9] Lie not one to another: stripping yourselves of the old man with his deeds, [10] And putting on the new, him who is renewed unto knowledge, according to the image of him that created him.

I do not believe that you should stop having sex after the time of fertility. you have shown great discipline in adhering to church teaching on birth control. I do recommend study and prayer. continue in the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist. God bless you
