I was objecting to your assertion that he couldn't vote to convict. Of course he could have. Impeachment is a political process, true, but that doesn't mean that votes have to follow party lines. See Nixon's near-impeachment. The thing that convinced him to resign was that enough of his party's senators were willing to vote for convictionI don't understand your point. How does what you say make it more reasonable for McConnell to make the political vote to convict?
Would there have been consequences? Perhaps - a large percentage of the Republican party has embraced Trump. However, a big part of what gives the Trumpian wing power is the fact that Republican leadership is happy to roll over on command. It's turned into a vicious cycle, and the only people with the power to do anything about it are McConnell and his colleagues, by NOT bowing to the pressure. They might lose some voters, but they'd also get some back - and I think that they fail to recognize that.
