"I am suggesting that he tweeted it because he thought he could. A numbness had built up such that the totally unacceptable became ignored."

I agree. Our standards have sunk to unimaginable lows. No matter who the president or any elected official is, we need them to show leadership and character that our children can hope to grow into.

We will always have disagreements about policy. But agreement about the quality of character should be universal.

This seems more like a first than a final assessment.
Early assessment perhaps. I don't know that any assessment of anything can be said to be truly final.

It’s the author's final assessment.

Is the author deceased? If not, then he is capable of making another assessment at some future time. The author would have been well advised just to have not used the word final. If the author later thinks of something that he has a desire to add to this assessment he will look foolish for having called this a final assessment.

Trump Presidency: A Final Assessment, and the Path Forward | National Review

I appreciate this article because I think it best reflects my view of Trump and his presidency. It’s written to those on the right and center-right, though obviously anyone can read it. And I think it clearly spells out why he lost re-election.
As other commentators have said, National Review is currently scrambling to recover at least some of its lost credibility (and readership) after years of trying to be the voice of the NeverTrumpers.

Now that the latter are no more significant in our nation's public life than the Prohibition Party, and in fact are in disgrace, the editors at NR are giving the idea of redefining themselves the "old college try."

It’s the author's final assessment.
But one of the success that he mentions may not be such a success after all. The results of Trump's court appointments have not been entirely favorable to the Right, given Bostock v. Clayton County and the various cases involving the election. Only time will tell.

That’s not relevant to the OP.

True. And not everything will go the way conservatives want. But it’s still a positive on paper.

The United States is changing and conservatives have run out of real vision for anything that isn't the Republic of Gilead where you can "grab em by the genitals" and get away with it, as long as you are a wealthy, powerful Commander.

The rest is just some third-rate political commentator trying to explain away his moral cowardice and confusion.

I’ll finish reading it later, but the first few paragraphs prefacing the framing was off-putting.

Say what you’re going to say and LTCFWTM.
This tidbit seems to say that “many of his supporters” were duped:
“The undeserved martyr-like treatment given to Trump by many of his supporters is mostly the by-product of his treatment by the media, which makes no sense to me..”

Since he’s been doing this for years, my guess is that his intro was to help ward off the knee-jerk reactions.

What a thing to nitpick about.

I don't consider it being nit picking. If one uses a word one should use a word that is appropriate not one that has little relevance to reality. Redefining words so they do not in any way resemble their traditional meaning ought to be opposed consistently. An initial analysis of a presidency as it has just ended should not be called a final analysis.

It should be if he has no intention of writing a second analysis. But hey, let’s talk about that instead.

Whether or not he has no intention of writing another analysis he still has no need to use the word final. "My analysis of the Trump Presidency" is quite accurate under the circumstance. There is absolutely no need to include the word final and a good reason to include the word my.
