Do you practice the laws of the Sabbath?

Leaving out the particular day you live the Sabbath as that is a stand alone thread.
Do you abstain from working, etc. Do you know the various things required in the OT for honoring the Sabbath day? Do you keep the Sabbath?

In all honesty, mate, no. I do not see it as a requirement of faith.
It must be ingrained in me because I still have that train of thought, trying not to work or cause anyone else to work on the Sabbath. I do wish I knew all that was required on the Sabbath in the OT, I guess I have some studying to do.
I do sort of agree with you.

Obedience to God's law is indeed a fruit of faith according to James in James 2:18-20; 26.
But we are no longer under the law are we?
I think the Commandments are good things to live by but they have been replaced.

We are only "under the law" if we stand guilty before God of breaking the law according to the scriptures *Romans 3:19-20. We are not saved by keeping the law. We are saved by grace through faith and not of ourselves it is a gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast *Ephesians 2:8-9. Obedience to God's Law is not how we are saved it is the fruit of faith of one that is already been given Gods promise of forgiveness and salvation and the fruit of God's work in us *Philippians 2:13 as we believe and follow His Word. If our faith has no fruit it is dead *James 2:18-20; 26 and our tree will be cast down and thrown into the fire *Matthew 3:10; 7:19-20; 13:49-50. God's 10 commandments have not been replaced at all. Everyone of them is repeated in the new covenant (scripture support here). God's law (10 commandments) has the same role they always have and that is to give us the knowledge of good (right doing) and evil (wrong doing); sin and righteousness *Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4 and to lead us to Christ that we might be forgiven through faith *Galatians 3:22-25 to be born again *1 John 3:6-9 and made free to walk in God's Spirit of love *Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:4; 1 John 5:3-4; Hebrews 8:10-12.

But we are no longer under the law are we?
I think the Commandments are good things to live by but they have been replaced.

While it is true that we are no longer under the law, Paul spoke about multiple different categories of law, such as the law of God, the law of sin, and works of the law, so it is important to correctly identify which law he was saying we are not under. For example, in Romans 3:27, Paul contrasted a law of works with a law of faith, and in Romans 7:25, he contrasted the law of God with the law of sin. In Romans 6:14, Paul specified that the law that we aren't under was a law where sin had dominion over us, which does not describe the law of God, which is a law where holiness, righteousness, and goodness have dominion over us (Romans 7:12), but rather it is the law of sin where sin had dominion over us.

Furthermore, in Psalms 119:29, David wanted God to be gracious to him by teaching him to obey His law, so that is the content of God's gift and what being under grace looks like. Romans 6:15, being under grace does not mean that we are permitted to sin, and sin is the transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4), so we are still under the law of God and obligated to obey it. In addition, everything else in Romans 6 is in favor of obedience to the law of God and against sin. For example, in Romans 6:19-23, no longer presenting ourselves as slaves to impurity, lawlessness, and sin is contrasted with now presenting ourselves as slaves to God and to righteousness leading to sanctification, and the goal of sanctification is eternal life in Christ, which is the gift of God, so obedience to the the law is again the content of God's gift of salvation. Our salvation is from sin and sin is the transgression of the law of God, so being trained by grace to live in obedience to God's law through faith is what receiving the gift of Jesus saving us from living in transgression of God's law looks like.

All of God's righteous laws are eternal (Psalms 119:160), so none of them will ever be replaced. Instructions for how to testify about God's nature can't be replaced without first replacing God. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, so we should live in a way that testifies about who he is by keeping the Sabbath holy instead of a way that testifies against him.

I’ve honored the Sabbath according to Jewish custom and adapted my approach later on. But the change wasn’t beneficial. That goes beyond Shabbat.

For some, structure is a must. They bloom in settings where practices or traditions are maintained. Others prefer a different approach. Middle of the road or more hands off. Neither are wrong.

My happiest Shabbats were spent with others. Lighting the candles, praying, and sharing a meal. Reading the weekly torah portion and celebrating its arrival and departure was meaningful.

Yours in His Service,

~bella

Lets get back to the Sabbath and whether we follow the guidelines set up in the OT in following them, Do we follow any of them a few or none. Do you know others other then rest with no work, etc?
Recently I read something on the Sabbath, Gods reasoning for it. I will try to find it and post it as it was quite insightful.

Here are ten listed in google, wow, I am sorely lacking.

"1. Do not work.
If a work event comes up on the Sabbath, you decline. If you don’t get all your work done before the Sabbath, you plan for an early morning the next day. When thoughts about work pop into your head, promise yourself you will deal with it tomorrow (if you need to, write a quick note so you won’t forget about it). By not working on the Sabbath, you are saying, “God is more important than my job.”
2. No TV.
Remember the Sabbath is about being with God. I don’t know about you, but I don’t often experience God’s presence while watching Television.
3. No social media.
Similar to TV, social media is a distraction from God. Cutting out these types of distractions will go a long way in keeping your Sabbath day holy.
4. Only listen to Christian music.
Setting your music to Christian radio is like setting the mood for the day. It draws you into God’s presence and keeps you focused on His goodness.
5. Spend extra time reading your Bible and praying.
One of the best ways to build a relationship with God is through direct communication with Him. Be intentional about seeking more time to talk with and learn from God.
6. Have a family Bible study time.
Read a devotional or passage of scripture as a family. Spend time discussing what you read and then pray for each other.
7. No house work.
Whether it’s cleaning the bathrooms, doing laundry, or mowing the lawn, house work never ends! So do yourself a favor and ignore it one day a week. (If you need some convincing, just remember the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42; chose what is better!)
8. Spend time outside enjoying God’s creation.
God created this whole world for our benefit! This is why many people experience God more intimately while in nature. So take a walk, play in the park, or climb a mountain and ask God to reveal himself to you through His creation.
9. Have family worship time.
Gather the family together and get creative. Worship God through, song, dance, art, or storytelling.
10. Invite friends over for fellowship.
A Sabbath day does not need to be a day of isolation. Get together with your brothers and sisters in Christ and spend time encouraging each other in the Lord.

Remember, these are just ideas for how to observe the Sabbath, to help get you started, and you do not need to implement them all. I recommend prayerfully considering how God would like you to spend your Sabbath day, and follow His guidance above all else.

Even though I spent the last year taking a Sabbath rest day, I am far from perfect in this discipline. Some weeks still get away from us and Sunday fills with everything we didn’t get to sooner. Therefore, I leave you with these words of wisdom about how to keep the Sabbath according to the Bible, from Matthew Henry:

“The Sabbath is a sacred and Divine institution; a privilege and benefit, not a task and drudgery. God never designed it to be a burden to us, therefore we must not make it so to ourselves. The Sabbath was instituted for the good of mankind, as living in society, having many wants and troubles, preparing for a state of happiness or misery. Man was not made for the Sabbath, as if his keeping it could be of service to God, nor was he commanded to keep it outward observances to his real hurt. Every observance respecting it, is to be interpreted by the rule of mercy.”"

What Is required in keeping the Sabbath according to Mosaic Law:[/U]

"1. No work done at all (Ex. 20: 10; Lev. 23: 3; Jer. 17:21-22). No watering the lawn, no working in the yard, no hobbies, no surfing, no fixing flat tires, etc. By law if a person did not stop all types of activity in honor of the Sabbath, he was breaking the law. In Numbers 15:32-36 a man was caught collecting sticks on the Sabbath, and he received a rock concert from the people he knew.

2 No kindling of a fire (Ex. 35:3). No fellowship cookouts or barbecues. You can't go into a restaurant and get a hamburger that's been flame broiled, you can't cook eggs, or pancakes in the morning because you'd be kindling a fire for cooking. To drive a car would be to "kindle a fire" In the combustion chamber of your engine.

3. No traveling (Ex. 16:29). Later the Jews added to this law, allowing only a half mile of travel on the Sabbath which we see observed in the NT. But the pure law says "stay at home." Actually, If you kept this part of the law, you could not travel to your church gathering unless it was less than one-quarter mile away from home. If you had an emergency you could not drive to the hospital.

4. No trading (Amos 8:5). If you happened to need gas to get to church service, you could not "trade" money for gasoline. You would not be allowed to buy a cassette tape of that morning's message or a book at the store. There is to be No exchanging of money for goods. If you worked with stocks and you needed to sell you couldn’t.

5. No marketing (Neh. 10:31; 13:15,19). Make sure you do no shopping whatsoever. You can't buy any ice cream for dessert after dinner or anything else. If you run out of food or drink at home you can’t go out to purchase any, you can’t even by a stick of gum.

6."... a holy assembly with double the daily offering along with the other offerings. In other words, you are to give twice as much on the Sabbath (Num. 28:9).Do we practiced this today In compliance with Old Testament law. Do Sabbatarian's really practice the law? I have yet to see people go to Shabbat and give twice as much each week.

7. New showbread In the holy place (Lev. 24:8). Of course this cannot be done today since there is no temple, so this part of the Sabbath cannot be followed by the church. The fact Is the Sabbath was not made for the gentiles, but for the Jews and their generations Ex. 31:12-17). It's a law given between God and the Jews.

8.The last part of the requirements for keeping the Sabbath day law Is the penalty for breaking It. DEATH"

Number 3 is confusing as if you can't travel and they suggest you stay home, how can you go to church. And for many that is the only time they go to church is on their Sabbath and is the most important day to go to church for most all.

What do you mean a Saturday belief? The "seventh day" is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. - Exodus 20:10 according to Gods' 4th commandment. Bible time is "evening to evening" Genesis 1:1-5. This would make God's Sabbath of the 4th commandment Friday evening to Saturday evening our time according to the scriptures. No other day is the Sabbath according to Gods' 4th commandment and God's Word.

Exodus 20:10 [10], But THE SEVENTH DAY IS THE SABBATH of the LORD your God...

Actually no! Most of that post is taken out of context to scripture (referring to points 2; 3; 6; 7; 8) and is in regards to collecting manna and cooking on the Sabbath and other civil and Sanctuary laws in regards to the old covenant for remission of sins (I am referring to the scriptures used to justify some of the modern claims of what to do and what not to do). We are in the new covenant now not the old covenant made of better promises. God has supplied His own sacrifice for the sins of the world *John 1:29. Jesus is now our great high Priest ministering on our behalf in the Heavenly Sanctuary made without hands of which the earthly was only a copy *Hebrews 7:1-28; Hebrews 8:1-13; Hebrews 9:1-23; Hebrews 10:1-22

Now come on, you know that is the sda's practice for the Sabbath but it is another subject because it is huge and so it needs to be kept separate and you know it There are many threads that touch on that subject which is why I asked you to not start it. If you want another thread among the 100s that have been started then go and start one but not here. Many do not use Saturday for their Sabbath. Not that you need to be told that so please don't start here.
Also no where in the word does it use the word Saturday for the sabbath.

I am sorry dear friend but I do not know what your talking about here. You posted in the "Sabbath and law" forum and according to the scriptures in Exodus 20:8-11 in God's Word (not mine), the Sabbath as "the seventh day" of the week. There is no other Sabbath beside that which the scriptures define as the Sabbath day in regards to Gods' 4th commandment of the 10 commandments. If you believe there is then you will need to show this from scripture as the scriptures your trying to use that relate to the Sabbath in the old testament are to the definition of the Sabbath given in Exodus 20:8-11. Anyhow, I am happy not to participate in this discussion if you do not want to discuss what the scriptures define as the biblical Sabbath of God's 4th commandment in Exodus 20:8-11, but honestly how can we talk about what is required on the Sabbath if we do not know what the Sabbath is?

Man was not made for the Sabbath, as if his keeping it could be of service to God, nor was he commanded to keep it outward observances to his real hurt. Every observance respecting it, is to be interpreted by the rule of mercy.”"
10 Ways to Keep the Sabbath Holy - Arabah

The Sabbath is a blessing that God made from the beginning Genesis 2:3.

The Sabbath is a sign between God and His people Exodus 31:12-17 12 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.

And a sign of sanctification Ezekiel20:12 Moreover I also gave them My Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them

The Bible tells us how to enjoy the Sabbath:

Isaiah 58: 13,14 “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the Lord honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words,
14 Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord;
And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth,
And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father.
The mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Mathew 12:11 Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.

Sabbath will be kept on the New Earth (God is consistent about His chosen day).

Isaiah 66:23
And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.

God tells us the importance of knowing Him. Sabbath is 24 hours out of the week that should be dedicated to spending time with God by praying, going to church, reading the bible, bible studies, taking nature walks, doing good to help others and resting. It's His very special day and God wants it to be a blessing for us and should not be burdensome.

God bless

I don't want to debate with you and your beliefs. You shouldn't use mine or anyone else's threads for your own soap box. I asked you not to bring up your Saturday belief as there are hundreds of threads about it and this is just to hear what others think is necessary to practice on the Sabbath concerning the OT's direction.

Saturday is the seventh day of the week, always has always will be.

This is not words of the SDA. God spoke and wrote them thousands of years before the SDA church formed:

Exodus
20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
