Except six months ago no one knew when the vaccine would be coming. Nothing had been approved at that point.
I agree, but it looks like more planning could have been done. E.g. nursing homes have been slowed because it hadn't been decided how to handle people who weren't competent to give consent. Forms and computer programs could have been done in advance.

Part of it is manpower. The people doing this are the same ones facilitating treatment and testing. And of course states are short on staff because of budget problems that the same people making complaints don't want solved.

Actually they do know exactly how many vaccinations have been given.

The nurse, pharmacist or doctor have to register at the time the vaccination is given. Also, they know exactly how many viles were delivered to begin with.
They're collecting the data, but states say they're taking a while to get to them.

It was pretty clear over the summer that a vaccine was coming by the end of the year. Even by September flip flop Fauci had come around to a vaccine being available by the end of the year. They knew about the freezer issues and other requirements for the vaccine. None of this is new, everyone knew about it over the summer.

It didn't help that Pelosi held up aid to states for the vaccine rollout in her failed attempt to spend more money the nation doesn't have. However, the states have been pathetic in handling the vaccine rollout.

Actually that isn't true. In September the CEO of Pfizer, said the Phase 3 trial would deliver enough results by October to show if the vaccine worked or not. However it wasn't until November 8th that Pfizer was able to release preliminary analysis of the first 94 cases. Back during the summer it was not "pretty clear" that a vaccine would definitely be available before the end of the year. That was a goal, but it wasn't definite. Of course Trump said that a vaccine would be available before Election Day, but he was wrong just as he was wrong when he said that COVID was "going to disappear."

Distribution of the vaccine to the states by the Federal government is also an issue here: Vaccine distribution: Why states getting 40% fewer doses than expected (usatoday.com)

Pfizer filed for their emergency authorization in November. Everyone knew it was coming. Leave Trump out of it, it doesn't matter what his predictions were. Pfizer and Moderna were both signaling over the summer that they believed there would be a vaccine by the end of the year. Everyone knew it was coming eventually, the states were going to be unprepared whether the vaccine arrived in October, December or early next year.

I agree with you. What Trump says is certainly meaningless.

Show me evidence that any manufacturer said that they would definitely have a vaccine by the end of 2020.

Perhaps it would help if the Federal government (under Trump) was wasn't lagging in distributing the vaccines.

See, I don't put all the blame on the states. There is plenty of blame to go around.

The main reason they are getting 40% fewer doses than expected is that they aren't using the supplies they have been given.

Most of the 50 states haven't given out even 25% of what they have received. The nursing homes are the chief culprit. Even nursing staff have refused the Vaccines...

I say that if they refuse based on conspiracy theory nonsense then keep moving forward...don't stop and spend hours wasting time trying to convince them.

Others who truly want the Vaccines want to return to their lives. How about letting them know where to get jabbed?

I know that I would love to get back to work. Then take a nice vacation doing some deep sea fishing...

Pfizer was aiming for the end of the year as early as April. Pfizer aims for 10-20 million doses of coronavirus vaccine by end-2020

Only 2 million vaccine doses have been administered so far despite states being in possession of well over 10 million doses. The dems will no doubt blame Trump and yet it was Pelosi who held up $8 billion in vaccine rollout money holding up the stimulus bill for the last 6 months.

This is yet another example of why products should never be in the hands of government. Right now states are playing middle man, determining where vaccines go and who gets them. They're completely incompetent at this job. Government is never able to adequately determine demand and allocate resources accordingly. Had this been left in the hands of the private sector, administration of the vaccine would be far more efficient. Fascism/socialism never works.

I wish I had the stamina to believe in as many contradictory conspiracy theories with fervent, blind conviction as some people did with the pandemic.

The hysteria has been maddening. No one is willing to question anyone with the title.of doctor, which is a huge problem. The six feet silliness, masks and just about everything hasn't been questioned and when it has been its been met with hysteria. None of the lockdowns have actually worked, in fact in California right now its worse since they placed more strident restrictions. But of course we're not allowed to question.

Because this vaccine is outside the free market, it will be administered in the most inefficient way possible. There is no incentive for the state to move quickly, there's no incentive for the people administering the vaccine to put any care into what they're doing and there is no incentive on the part of the public to treat the vaccine with care. When something is free and costs us nothing we don't care about it much and treat it poorly. When there are no customers to please and no market to respond to, inefficiency rules. That's what we're seeing now.

Most vaccines are delivered “outside the free market.”

South Dakota and West Virginia lead the nation in the % vaccinated. Why? I think it is because they have less red tape on giving it out. I once interviewed for a position at a California state college. I remember looking at my parking pass, and it had four authorized signatures on it. That is quite a bureaucracy just to let someone park on campus for a couple of hours.

I suspect too that these states that are hankering for money to give out the shots are holding it up as a form of blackmail. If you can't fund the vaccine distribution you are in bad shape. Next round should go to those who first use up their vaccine. I bet that would put a fire under the laggards.

I have to say, that a great Governor would have negotiated their own deal with Pfizer and they would be heroes at this point. Pfizer wanted to promise more to the USA, but the federal government passed on it initially. They now have a plan in place for millions more in June or July, when this could have been earlier. Instead, those earlier doses are going overseas.

Incompetence is when after almost a year, it is still extremely hard for the public to buy n-95 masks. There is a severe lack of leadership on Covid.

Our West Virginia governor has done a very good job dealing with the pandemic. However, as you point out with the US government passing on additional doses of vaccine, there is plenty of blame to go around.

It looks like WVa is doing more of the vaccination itself, compared to NJ, which is delegating it to CVS and hospitals. And the CVS thing seems to be a Federal program. WVa is having the national guard give shots. Mostly even the right shots, except for a slight mixup.
