Smoking anything is a sin because it's both addictive which is a form of slavery of the flesh and it is destructive to health.
Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Marijuana is additionally sinful because it's illegal -unless it isn't where you are from.
Romans 13:1
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

Oddly enough, my ONLY addiction is caffeine. I can smoke cigars/pipes as and when I like without ever becoming hooked. Months on, months off, no problem. But a world without caffeine in it just seems bleak. I haven't gone a day without for years now.
To put it into context:
Space cake: consumed once - kind of enjoyed it, never really bothered again.
Caffeine: consumed once, addicted for life.

Agree on the caffeine. I've been up a few hours now and already had two diet dews and two energy shots.
I can relate only too well. It's even worse for you in the states because of the SHEER variety on offer. I'm like a kid in a candy store when I'm across the pond, to the point that I'm often literally the last man standing in the "city that never sleeps".
With regards to marijuana, I think it has the potential to be a wonderful thing for certain people WHEN used accordingly at pharmaceutical grade with the mg's CLEARLY labelled. But that's another story...
I've known enough smokers to know that it's bad for you. There is a reason that it is called dope. That's what it turns people into. The bible warns people against getting drunk. It's not illegal but it is bad for the health, effects personality changes (never for the better) and can get you killed. Dope smokers are usually passive, but many suffer from severe psychosis. Mental health is a major issue in Australia. There is a substantial correlation between using marijuana and mental illness. If it’s illegal where you live it’s a sin. Also if it causes you to sin when your under the influence of it then it’s a sin. Other than that if used in moderation in a place where it is legal there’s nothing in the Bible against it.
What if it’s illegal in your state and you live 1 mile from the border of a state where it’s legal? Your fellow citizens 2 miles away smoking weed would not be sinning, while you would be sinning. See how that doesn’t hold up?If it’s illegal where you live it’s a sin. Also if it causes you to sin when your under the influence of it then it’s a sin. All things are lawful but not all are helpful. Marijuana is, in most cases, harmful. God gave us dominion over the creation. If we are addicted, it has dominion over us.The body is a temple is way to broad. If that was the case just by using electricity you are purposely causing pollution that in turn harms the body. I've been over this issue before and all I can come up with is God made it so we can use it. Everything has a purpose.

Sin isn’t based on man’s borders and what’s legal or illegal according to man’s laws.
sin is the transgression of God’s law.
True, it's all about how you use it. Alcohol was used in the Bible but being a drunkard was wrong. We can't abuse any substance. Except caffeine.
I don’t believe marijuana consumption is right for me.
I don’t believe its right for my spouse and children.
I don’t impose my standard on others.
But I won’t be around those who do. It’s not my thing.
Yours in His Service,

“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;”
Romans 13:1-3 NASB

With marijuana, you may not know what you are getting either. I know someone who had some that was laced that nearly sent her mad.
Unless under medical supervision, I'd avoid drug use of any kind, except for over the counter medications like aspirin or Panadol.
