Sadly this thread is not about literal cults.. sorry to disappoint some..

This thread is about not so well known media that has a small dedicated fan base. What are some things you really like that are sadly vastly underrated in terms of exposure?

For me that would be The Life And Times Of Tim. One of the funniest cartoons I have ever watched. Sadly it was only on HBO and I've never heard anyone ever mention this show to me in my life. I do feel the writing and humor is on the quality of the best episodes of South Park and The Simpsons. I find the type of humor quite unique too. Much of the humor derives on the awkwardness Tim experiences. Whether from his own undoing or the undoing others force upon him the central theme is that Tim faces a lot of embarrassment in life. From his boss forcing him to pretend to be a Mexican to meet diversity quotas to a priest that talks him into doing bizarre things in public.. the poor guy never catches a break.

Anyways curious about any hidden gems you like that you wish others knew about.

Meh Guy, I remember watching south park on southparkstudios and watch all they had for free. It was a funny show, to watch growing up.
Also on the network tv we had Toonami, which came on Cartoon network and it had the show Dragon ball z which was something me and my brother watched together at home after the school bus dropping me off at the house.

Never watched a lot of the simpsons. I use to watch twilight zone a lot, and Star trek.

Where can you find this movie at? The Life And Times Of Tim to watch it? It sounds interesting.

Ah.. yeah South Park Studios.. brings a lot of good memories.

IDK.. I think amazon has the Life And Times Of Tim. It's not a movie, but a cartoon series. Had about 3 seasons 30 episodes in total.

It looks like you can watch at least some of it on You-tube.

Bah... they want $1.99 per episode

oh-h-h

I am in the United States, and at times I like to see what is produced by filmmakers in other countries. I have enjoyed a few Hispanic shows. One was Cuban, with the cultural context of what can be real life for a Cuban who is not an aristocrat or a media star. The players did not come on like they were stars acting, but they seemed like real people whose houses had front doors on the village street.

There was some funny things from the 70s-early 80s that I like. I wonder how the humor has held up...
things like Kentucky Fried Movie, Fernwood Tonight, SCTV, Taxi (series)

Well I'm not sure what is considered a cult thing. I liked a lot of the older shows that were on Comedy Central from the early 90s to early 2000s

Well Strangers with Candy (the series) was quite good. It was a parody of "the afterschool specials" that use to play on American TV of the 1970s-1980s, as well as based on this one motivational speaker that toured the country in the late 70s (telling her story of getting into drugs and prostitution).

TV Funhouse was another goody. Very short lived, like only 8 episodes.

I laughed a lot at some of the Upright Citizen's Brigade episodes.

Was very into MTV's Daria of the late 90s. Also liked "Celebrity Death Match".

I like the original Tick live action. Actually all the 3 TV series, but especially the middle one from like 2000.

I got into Community after the it was taken off TV and the internet. I really love that show, one of the most cool shows out there as far as being a parody of TV, and movies.

And really watch a lot of Rick and Morty when I can it's really the same kind of postmodern homage and parody of Science Fiction, horror etc.

Oh forgot an old Comedy Central favorite. Really Love the Kids in the Hall.

I don't remember. I found it by searching YouTube for "full movies Cuban", I think.

Oh, now I am remembering > it was something like this >

On national certified . . . state . . . news, it came out that someone had died after making billions of dollars, and all people with a certain last name for their families were getting a cut. Ones felt it could be a scam, but it was in the state broadcast, which ought to mean it was certified.

Things go this way, that way, among various people. Then it is something like certain ones trying to make a claim get no response and they are so concerned, and wondering if they dare pay for a lawyer, and then they could get left in the lurch losing all that money.

So, then, someone finds out people really are getting rich from the thing.

But still . . . it doesn't work for certain ones. Why? The accent position in their last name isn't in the right place!!!! or something like this, about Hispanic spellings of family names making a major diff . . .

I think it's something that never reached mainstream but is highly respected from a smaller community. Older shows that might be less known or indivisible audiences might now count.. I only titled the thread the way I did was because I wikied The Life And Times Of Tim and it said it had a "cult following" lol.. whatever that means.

Honestly I'm pretty liberal with this thread. It's more about sharing media you find if of high quality that you think people in general know nothing about.

When I grew up, 'media' was books, newspapers, radio and limited B&W TV.

As a young teenager I haunted my regional library. It was there I discovered the wonderful world of James Thurber; American cartoonist, author, humourist, journalist, playwright, and celebrated wit. Thurber had a dry and unpredictable wit combined with a sense of the ridiculous. I'm not sure, but I think I may have read everything he wrote, which was easy since he wrote little books full of little stories and single panel cartoons. I blame him, in part, for my sometimes acidic, sense of humour.

Thurber is probably best known for 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'.- a book which became a film I never saw.

Hmm.. Taxi. Cannot say I ever seen that show but my parents say when I was 5 or 6 I couldn't get enough of it and watched it all the time and was obsessed with it. Even though I have no memory of this, lol.

Danny DeVito and Andy Kaufman are great though.

Yes that was one of those noteworthy shows that launched careers kind of like how Mork and Mindy launched Robin Williams, and Moonlighting launched Bruce Willis.

The pilot episode is here

Well I watched it again, not having seen it since sometime in the mid 80s. An OK episode but not something to write home about. I think Breaking Bad had probably one of the strongest pilot episodes I have seen.

I like the original Tick live action. Actually all the 3 TV series, but especially the middle one from like 2000.

Looks like it's no longer available to watch, so this may be cruel to mention, but last month there was a charity event called All The Ticks! where cast members from all three shows (including, obviously, all the Ticks) did readthroughs of scripts and a little Q&A. The spouse and I enjoyed it -- probably the highlight was that the cartoon crew did an unproduced script that would have been in Season 4. A little tough without cartoon visuals, but great to see voice actors doing their thing.

So yeah... The Tick, Cowboy Bebop, Lars von Trier's The Kingdom (the bonkers Scandinavian original, not the 'Stephen King' version)

For more recent foreign things that are worth a try (all on Netflix):
Money Heist (a Spanish bank robbery tv show - at least the first couple seasons)
Samurai Gourmet
Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman

I should probably list off some others...

As far as films go..

I love the 1922 silent film Haxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages. The imagery and tone is just so creepy, especially if you play it on back of a black metal soundtrack. If I were ever given the gift to direct a film I'd take heavy inspiration from this film.

I also enjoyed the Flapper (1920). Wasn't really expecting too.. watched some of it out of curiosity and just couldn't stop.

Freaks from 1932 is also very good. I hear about the film being disturbing but I thought it was alright. Apparently a woman claimed to suffer a miscarriage from watching the film when it debuted. Although personally depending on the reason I find it a little offensive others find it disturbing. Since the film uses actually side show attractions for it's cast. They're still human beings. I also like how they showed the humanity with them even if in the end they (deservingly) turn dark in the end. The film would have been better too if the studio didn't censor and give an undeserved and weird tacked on happy ending.

I enjoyed M (1931). The subject matter is pretty shocking, especially for something made in the 1930s. One of the early Peter Lorre films. I love him, he always cracks me up. Although I guess the Nazis put a stop to these kinds of films.. lol. Came out a few years before Hitler's rise to power.
