David Bowie: “It’s all pose. It’s all ******* posing. It’s nothing to do with music. He knows it too.”

Prince: “An overrated midget… Prince has to find out what it means to be a prince. That’s the trouble with conferring a title on yourself before you’ve proved it. His attitude when he opened for us… was insulting to our audience. You don’t try to knock off the headline like that when you’re playing a Stones crowd. He’s a prince who thinks he’s a king already. Good luck to him.”

Elton John: “An old *****… his writing is limited to songs about dead blondes.” Elton’s response: “It would be awful to be like Keith Richards. He’s pathetic. It’s like a monkey with arthritis, trying to go on stage and look young. I have great respect for the Stones but they would have been better if they had thrown Keith out 15 years ago.”

Sex Pistols: “There’s more to it than saying ‘****’ on TV or learning to spit by practicing in the mirror.” Sid Vicious’ response: “I wouldn’t **** on Keith Richards if he was on fire.”

Oasis: “These guys are just obnoxious. Grow up and then come back and see if you can hang.”

Justin Bieber: “He’s a wannabe. His music? I mean it’s a load of crap isn’t it?”

Guns N’ Roses: “I admire their guts. But too much posing. Their look; it’s like there’s one out of this band, one looks like Jimmy, one looks like Ronnie. Too much copycat, too much posing for me.”

Grateful Dead: “The Grateful Dead is where everybody got it wrong. Just poodling about for hours and hours. Jerry Garcia, boring ****, man. Sorry, Jerry.”

Metallica and Black Sabbath: “Millions are in love with Metallica and Black Sabbath. I just thought they were great jokes… I don’t know where Metallica’s inspiration comes from, but if it’s from me, then I ****** up”

Creedence Clearwater Revival: “When I first heard them, I was really knocked out, but I became bored with them very quickly. After a few times, it started to annoy me. They’re so basic and simple that maybe it’s a little too much.”

Led Zeppelin: “Jimmy [Page] is a brilliant player. But I always felt there was something a little hollow about it, you know?”

The Bee Gees: “Well, they’re in their own little fantasy world. You only have to read what they talk about in interviews… how many suits they’ve got and that kind of crap. It’s all kid stuff, isn’t it?”

Two questions, bracketing a statement:

Are fifteen cherry picked comments from a sixty year long career actually significant?
Given the quantity and range of chemicals that have allegedly passed through his body those remarks are surprisingly incisive.
Did he have nothing to say about penguins?

I always liked the Stones music and never gave a rat’s behind about anything they said or did mainly because I thought they were all poseurs doing it to shock the bourgeoisie. I even thought that as a elementary school child.

lol for me the quote about Jimmy Page is very telling. I like Richards but Jimmy Page clearly out classes him if you are familiar with his work in Led Zeppelin as an artist, but it's funny his quote. It's totally sour grapes.

Yeah, I totally agree, not to mention Zeppelin had John Bonham too as a drummer.

Yeah, I agree not to mention Zeppelin had John Bonham too as a drummer.

Bonham was a very accomplished drummer. I had a big pubescent Led Zeppelin phase in the early 80s after his death.

But one thing I have noticed since getting into alternative rock there is lots of various styles of drumming. In some ways Bonhams seems pretty conventional by hard rock standards. I think if I had to become a drummer I would have an easier time with it compared the two simultaneous rhythms going on in Blur' song 2, or the high speed high percussion going on in Blondies Dreaming. I even noticed that the Drummer of Green Day, who often has simpler music can really hit the drums with a hard hit that gives some of Green Day's music a different feel from some of the older rock.

Also, I have to say that Richard's critique of Prince was a little harsh, considering that Prince had tomatoes, shoes and all kinds of garbage thrown at him when he opened for the Stones... I just don't see the purpose of insulting Prince worse than he had already been insulted by impatient Stones fans.

Controversy Tour - Wikipedia

Most people don't realize Prince, while being pretty extravagant in the public eye, was actually a devout Jehovahs Witness in his private life.

I guess I can sort of see his take on Prince with his attitude etc. Going back to the early days of Bill Maher, the first season of Politically Correct on Comedy Central in the early 90s, he gave out an award called the "Get Over Yourself" award and it was shaped like the Prince symbol back when he changed his name to a specially designed hieroglyphic. That action got a lot of bad press, even though I think there was some sympathetic reasons for it when it came to trying to get out of record contracts etc. that could be very unfair etc.

I think probably the biggest annoyance was his trying to be a Casanova. He was very lucky with the ladies but some of his attention was unwanted. He wrote Manic Monday for the Bangles and had a serious crush on their lead singer Susan Hoffs that bordered on celebrity stalking for a year or two.

I think he had more talent than I gave him credit for back in the day. He tried to straddle a lot of music genres from Rock, and Pop into Soul, Funk etc. And had a decent song writing ability and could play a number of instruments, with a very respectable electrical guitar proficiency.

Considering all the drugs he's taken over the years, it's amazing the guy can put together one coherent sentence. Rumor has it that he regularly takes blood transfusions to clean out his system. If so, that would make sense how he's managed to stay alive over the years.

Yes I had similar thought at the back of my mind, folks have joked about that for decades. I think he did kick a lot of the drugs somewhere in the 80s...
