I am new to the forums and I have a question about being filled in the Holy Spirit. I have been seeking the filling of the Holy Spirit with evidence of tongues at home for several weeks. Can this happen to me at home or do I need to touched by someone already filled with the Spirit? I have Spirit filled people who are willing to come lay hands on me but I do not want to trouble them and also afraid it may not happen I would waste their time.

Thanks

Yes.
A person can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, with evidence of tongues, at home alone.
I speak from personal experience, as that is how God did it for me.

God bless :plus:

You are .absolutely correct. Keep seeking and believing, just as Jesus taught.
Lk11v 9“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

It is the Father's delight to pour out his spirit on those who ask.

My first experience of the Spirit was at home, back in the 1970s. And since then, invariably at home, I have regularly gone back to the Lord for more of his spirit, and been filled all over again.

Dont want to derail this thread. "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." I cor 14:1 " If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" Luk 11:13

You could search my posts which lists about the groups that received in Scripture and additional info for some help/insight to have a better understanding.

How it happened for me is I just asked the Lord to help me speak in tongues. As I was asking, a word came to my mind, "Asante". So I softly sang that word to the Lord over and over and I felt wonderful. I looked up the word later and it means 'Thankyou' in Swahili. Since then I have just gone to prayer and sang nonsense words to the Lord as I think them up, and images and feelings and knowings from the Lord seem to come to me more easily when I do that compared to when I pray regularly. So it seems to me that as a believer I already have the Holy Spirit and receiving an extra filling of the Holy Spirit with speaking of tongues happens as an act of the will. I decide to do it and I ask and then go ahead.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.....I will keep seeking for the filling that I know I need in order to be effective and have the abundant life far beyond the physical things of the world.

BTW, my friend Dave Cuppett has experienced incredible supernatural events in his life and has written a book called "The Key of David" in which he talks about many of them.

Cool on the book. What did your friend say about your query?

My friend (Dave) now lives about 4 hours away due to some job changes. However, he has reached out to his sister in law and brother in law (they live in my town) and they have offered to help me as they have helped others to receive the Holy Spirit. They reached out to meet me any time that I want. I am just such an introvert that I have not accepted their offer at this point.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Personally I believe that a Christian can receive the Holy Spirit when they ask God, whether or not they speak in tongues afterwards.
I have been filled with the Spirit, and keep being refilled each day, yet I have never spoken in tongues. Tongues may be AN evidence of the Holy Spirit, but a greater desire to know and follow Jesus, and to read the Bible are also evidence that we have received the Spirit. More so, I would say, since Jesus said that the Spirit would live IN his disciples, lead them into truth and give them power to witness.

Jesus said that if we ask them we will receive.
I, for one when I was younger, used to hope for some great outward experience/feelings that would tell me that I had the Spirit; yet friends encouraged me to believe that God had answered my prayer even if I had no dramatic experience or special feelings.

Darrell understand the pressure when being prayed You're correct to asks. "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy." I Cor 14:1 Then from I Cor 12 listing of the spiritual gifts includes "another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:" v10

Some Scripture about what Jesus said about signs and wonders:
Jesus, while on earth, said look at the signs and wonders "If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in Him." John 10:37-38

Jesus said while on earth "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16 Also, "When I come to you and drive out demons by the Spirit of your Father in heaven—for the glory of your Father in heaven—you should recognize and rejoice that the kingdom of God has come to you." Matt 12:28

Some Scriptures about keep on being filled:
"Don’t get drunk with wine, because it makes you lose control. Instead, keep on being filled with the Spirit —" Eph 5:18

Peter and disciples were filled on the day of Pentecost. Plus "And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage." Acts 4:31

Ask God to forgive your sins before asking to be filled.
That's not what Jesus said.

13If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

The father will pour out His spirit on those who ask, not those who have sorted their lives out.
It is the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth, and without the Spirit, most people are not even aware of sins in their lives.

I don't believe anyone needs to have "sorted their life out"; I do believe they need to have repented, asked for forgiveness and for Jesus to make them clean.
The Spirit will have already been at work in their lives, convicting them of sin and leading them to Jesus to find forgiveness. But how could a Holy Spirit fill an unforgiven, sin filled life?

Nope. You are adding your conditions beyond what Jesus said.
The many believers who were filled by the Spirit in the OT obviously knew nothing of Jesus or what he did.

I have seen people filled with the spirit like Jesus said just because they asked, but knowing nothing of the cross.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to lead us to truth. If we can get our lives right without the spirit, then we don't really need the spirit.

Forgiveness, or being released from sin is an ongoing event throughout our lives as over time the Lord, by his Spirit, reveals further areas of our lives which need cleansing.
