Supreme Court strikes down Cuomo's COVID restrictions on religious services in New York
Court rules 5-4 that restrictions violated First Amendment
as new Justice Amy Coney Barrett casts decisive vote.

Supreme Court strikes down Cuomo's COVID restrictions on religious services in New York

"The Supreme Court late Wednesday struck down New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's new COVID-19 restrictions on religious gatherings, as new Justice Amy Coney Barrett cast one of her first high-impact votes and Chief Justice John Roberts sided in dissent with the court's liberal bloc.

In a 5-4 decision, the court said Cuomo's restrictions violated the Constitution's First Amendment right to freedom of worship and granted an injunction barring the rules from being enforced."

I already gave my opinion that this is about the stupidest Supreme Court decision since the Dred Scott case . Luckily New Yorkers don’t have any problems wearing masks . We’ve already lost too many people to this virus.

"Members of this Court are not public health experts, and we should
respect the judgment of those with special expertise and responsibility
in this area," the majority opinion said. "But even in a pandemic, the
Constitution cannot be put away and forgotten. The restrictions at issue
here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike
at the very heart of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty."

They strike at the heart of public safety too. Just like when wearing a seatbelt was imposed on us back in the 60s , some idiots complained about that too. It didn’t go to the Supreme Court. This is not about religion or religious beliefs being harassed, this is about preventing the spread of a deadly virus. The Court made the wrong decision

Stupid decision. If they are allowing stadium and convention centers with no rules, but only doing them on places of worship that would be one way for this to make sense. If the rule applies to all places then the fact of it being worship places is irrelevant. I view it the same as if a church saying "building codes go against our religion!" Tough. They apply to all buildings, including yours for PUBLIC SAFETY.

If churches have more strict numbers than other gathering buildings I would love to see the statutes.

Great so on the same basis shouting fire in a crowded cinema is now legal!

One vote away from doing away with the constitution. It should have been unanimous.

How do you interpret this?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Sorry, but like not shouting fire in a crowded theatre, it is not unreasonable to ban or limit mass gatherings during a time if pandemic.

That's not the point. The Supreme Court isn't there to change the constitution. They interpret it. It is pretty clear.

Time to make some adjustments to the Constitution then. Add more amendments. Can't people just do the online thing? That's even done Pre-Covid. Anyways, the selfishness of American's is really showing it's colors and other countries seem to have not much of a problem with going along with mitigation of the virus.

I have to say, America is probably the most selfish of countries.

More like it allows other forms of human sacrifice, as long as someone has a religious belief that they're doing the right thing.

Yeah, their attitude can be put in the same category as anti-vaxxers.

The vote was a waist of time, Since New York has started letting people go back to church and other places. With Conservative .It seem like prolife is pro birth only. If Trump supporters just listen to reasonable guideless and not Trump. We would have COVID-19 dealt with. Anyone can watch church on TV.
