• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I am not sure if 1 or 2 or 3 unrepented sins leads you to hell. But lets say, there is a perfect Christian who one day makes 1 or 2 or 3 sins, like small lies and sexual thoughts and dies 1 hour after the sins without having the chance to repent. A monk is telling me that a sinner must confess his/her sins to a priest in order to repent.

Anyway, the perfect Christian makes 1 or 2 or 3 sins in one day and neglects to repent either way and dies instantly that day. Is he going to heaven or hell?

A very sinful person who lives whole life in sin, in his last days, becomes Christian and confesses his sins. So, he is going to heaven just, because he was lucky enought to be alive and repent in his last days after living a sinful life? what about the perfect Christian who died instantly?

In the daily prayer Christ Jesus told his followers (those who believe in Him) to pray each day, we pray that we be forgiven our debts (such as our sins we didn't already perfectly repent from yet) just as we have forgiven others their debts to us.

9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
10Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us this day our daily bread,
12and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Luck has nothing to do with it. A person can repent at any time .... but .... it needs to be sincere .... and only God knows the sincerity of one's heart.

A monk is telling me that a sinner must confess his/her sins to a priest in order to repent.

Jesus is our High Priest ... we confess to Him ... He is the only one who can forgive sin unto salvation .... no earthly priest can forgive sins unto salvation ... if one is claiming that then they are claiming they are God.

Salvation is totally up to Jesus ...... period!

We are to walk with the Lord according to the knowledge we have ... and are also to study His Word so we may become more knowledgable constantly strengthening our walk/relationship with Him.

What is your denomination? Because you are from Greece, I am going to assume that you are Orthodox. According to Wikipedia, in the Eastern Orthodox church, "Orthodox understand that the confession is not made to the priest, but to Christ, and the priest stands only as witness and guide." I don't really know much about the Orthodox Church, but this seems to mean that it is Christ who forgives, so a person could at least theoretically be forgiven without confessing to a priest. If someone knows more about the Orthodox church, and I am misrepresenting what they believe, please correct me.

If you are Catholic, there is a distinction between mortal and venial sins. Venial sins do not cause a person to lose their salvation. I don't think that white lies and sexual thoughts are mortal sins, but it is a good idea to confess them for the sake of your own conscience, and because those sins displease God. However, the type of sins that would cause a person to lose their salvation are grave ones like murder, adultery, stealing something of great value, things like that. Even if you commit a mortal sin and are truly and completely repentant (showing "perfect contrition") and die before you can get to confession, you can still go to heaven.

If you are Protestant, most denominations do not believe confession to a priest is necessary for absolution. Confession is still an important part of the Protestant life, but it is often done more informally, and it is not a prerequisite for being saved. Rather, confession of our sins directly to God is what saves us; you confess to others for the sake of your own spiritual growth.

In any case, the common thread among all three denominations is that the mere act of rote confession is not per se what absolves you. Christ's sacrifice on the cross is what does that, through the repentance and faith of the penitent, and God is ultimately the one that confers forgiveness of sins. Confession is generally necessary for absolution in the Catholic and Orthodox churches, but it is still God who forgives. God honors true repentance and faith, even if a person gets hit by a car on the way to confession.

(Rom 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
(Rom 8:2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
(Rom 8:3) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
(Rom 8:4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
(Rom 8:5) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
(Rom 8:6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
(Rom 8:7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
(Rom 8:8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
(Rom 8:9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
(Rom 8:10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
(Rom 8:11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
(Rom 8:12) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
(Rom 8:13) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
(Rom 8:14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Jesus paid the price for the sins of the whole world; not just the sins up to the point where He paid this price on the cross, but all sins in the future as well - for everyone who has or will be born into a flesh body. when you receive spiritual rebirth, you receive forgiveness for all your sins; past, present and future. if you refuse to receive forgiveness (whether you think you don't need it, or think you've out-sinned all forgiveness), and you never change, then you will be judged for rejecting forgiveness - in such a case, the very first sin you ever committed would be enough to land you in the lake of fire forever.

'repent' doesn't mean 'stop that sinning'; 'repent' means 'to think differently or afterwards, that is, reconsider (morally to feel compunction): - repent.'.

if you have received spiritual rebirth by receiving Jesus as your Lord, as well as Savior, then you have repented through this 'different thinking'; and you've set your heart to be led by God through fellowship with His Holy Spirit inside of you as confirmed by His written Word (as revealed by the Holy Spirit). if you transgress God's laws after this point, these transgressions are already paid for by His blood, you have already received forgiveness for them, and changed your heart to be led by Him (repented).

I don't think God sees sin in such a way as the first guy there, but just as our dad or mother might, as in, are they trying to do good. But still, I see your point.

The first guy was trying and goes to heaven, if not, he didn't.

The second guy, assuming your point is, he got away with a lot of sin and was lucky enought to get his salvation before he died.

If that was the plan he played the odds, just as in poker, and may win, or my lose his life suddenly or Christ may return and catch him not caring, and he goes to hell.

Watch therefor,e for ye know not what hour the lord may come.

Or for that matter...Watch therefore for ye know not what hour ye may become road kill in a car accedent or whatever.

Playing the odds also shows insincerity, and God just may have special plans for someone who tries to pull that little stunt, and possibly not the type plans we will like...at all.

but repentance is not a one time only. we need to avoid sin and if we fail, we must repent

yes, repentance is a one-time only; because repentance isn't tied to specific instances of wrong thoughts, words, and/or actions; it is tied to the intent of our heart to be led by God rather than by self (those not yet reborn in Christ are led by their own limited knowledge, intellect and experience - led by self) - this is why we make Jesus LORD as well as Savior. repentance is a change in thinking; NOT an admission to every transgression of God's Law - we can still transgress the Law of God through ignorance without realizing it - and then, according to your view of repentance, how would we even know to 'repent'? if repentance is like you understand it, then no one would be able to completely repent (you can't repent for transgressions you are ignorant of, even if you're a lost man receiving salvation as you breathe your last breath).

the problem is that we aren't smart enough to apply the multitude of God's Laws to any given situation, so we are likely to transgress the law without realizing it; even though we've changed our thinking to intend to be led by God (repented). sin can be failing to do what's right, as well as failing to avoid doing what's wrong - no one can repent of each and every sin, because none of us can apply the multitude of God's Laws perfectly in every situation.

Kostilaks, I think the key idea is to confess and turn away from sins as you're aware of them, not to be obsessively afraid of confessing every tiny sin the instant it happens out of fear of being condemned if you should forget one. If you should happen to have unconfessed sin when you die, then I don't know for sure, but my belief is that God knows our hearts and He can see our desire to follow Him, even if we have a sin or two that we haven't confessed. Since we are human, we do continually slip up and sin, even if in our hearts we desire to please Him. That's a lot different than having a rebellious and unrepentant heart, or living in a state of continually unconfessed sin that you have no intention of repenting from. In my view, the goal is to keep drawing closer to God, to keep developing our relationship with Him, and to keep repenting and turning from sin as He reveals it to us. It sounds like perhaps this is just something else that your OCD is trying to get you to worry about....?
