Rock music , love it ! Always thought that idea of it ( or dance) being sinful was pure D stupid. There is music that will make you sad or fearful or show you bad or wrong behaviors ( no one nowadays complains about Carmen, Lucia di Lammamore , or Tosca, the operas) and you need to listen to that in limited amounts around small children. But censorship , NO!

What do you think it is a sin to listen rock music and why?

Depends on what you're listening to. Generally not though, just like art is not inherently sinful. Though both 'can' be.

I play guitar and I grew up with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan etc etc. The question in everything that we watch, listen to and actually do is how does it affect us spiritually? All things are lawful, but not all are edifying. That includes music of all kinds.

I don't believe it is a sin any more than most other music. I will qualify here and say that some contemporary music is bad as having high levels of vulgarity certain bands, rap groups etc.

But you can take an experiment with things like I did decades ago. I got rid of all my records for something like 6-9 months. I really intended it to be permeant, but all I listened to were some of the happy Charismatic chorus and praise music that was popular then as far media goes. I was not even watching TV then either. Having such a strong spiritual focus was a great blessing in some ways. But then I encountered some areas where I really needed the rock in certain times like feeling to lazy to want to clean your house, feeling sleepy when I'm driving my car etc. I actually found some times when that music actually helped me do things, and sometimes it brought me joy, or otherwise expressed sadness that the other music couldn't do. So I brought it back, but in a more focused way. Trying to avoid things that I thought brought me down, but brought back things that helped to motivate me etc.

There was a documentary, a bit dated now; 'Hells Bells: The Dangers of Rock and Roll'.

Probably would find it (or a similar one on youtube). Perhaps you might find it interesting.

I remember being shown two vids at a youth group, the first was Hells Bells, the second being 'Doorways to Danger' and was about Ouija, the occult etc.

The background instrumentals are too loud most times, I often wonder why most Rock musicians wear black colored garment a lot, why some of them act weird on stage, also the lyrics of most of their songs do not glorify God, as a Christian this is important to me. While I won't condemn all rock music as sinful, I will only listen to one whose lyrics glorify God, isn't too loud(my ear drums don't need it), they don't wear black colored garment all the time, they don't act weird on stage, and if the message of Christ is preached through their songs. God bless

(Blushes) just got finished listening to Cee Lo Green doing Forget You . But I was listening too and singing along to the real version of that song , not this bowdlerized radio edit . I don’t mind raunchy artistic expression as I consider that stuff to be mostly fantasy anyway . Cee Lo was actually mad at the record company but he edited the lyrics to sound like a he’s angry at a golddigging woman . .
There is one song by ICP that I only listen to when I’m in a good mood as the lyrics are really out there and having that image is not something I want in my head when I’m upset

"Rock" is an absolutely enormous genre, that encompasses millions of various artists. I really dislike it when things are pigeonholed in this way. It's an ignorant, lazy way to shut one's eyes to reality, and look down on things they don't understand.

I mean, you've got rock ballads like this one, that are just beautiful. I don't see anything "sinful" about this.

Not every "rock" song is about death and sex and drugs.

What do you think it is a sin to listen rock music and why?

What did God make you for? Yourself? Indulging your own desires, preferences and pursuits? Or did He give you life in order to know and serve Him?

Does your rock music glorify God? (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Does your rock music move you closer to the Lord? (Philippians 1:21; Hebrews 12:2; Colossians 3:2-3)
Does your rock music establish you in the philosophies and values of the World, or in the truth of God? (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17)
Is your rock music spiritual or does it appeal strongly to your flesh? (Galatians 5:17)
Can you do without your rock music? Is it at all difficult simply to stop listening to it for good? (1 Corinthians 6:12)

What do you think it is a sin to listen rock music and why?

I think a lot of Good answers have been given already, no of its self it is not a sin. A scripture to consider is:

Ecc 7:16 Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

There is a kind of righteousness, that destroys our life, it is where everything is sin to us, and we are afraid to do anything for fear of offending God. God is not easily offended. Enjoy life, enjoy what God has given. He asks us to not have a destructive kind of righteousness. With the following provision:

Ecc 7:17 Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

When the apostles were debating what a Christian should or should not do. The only two sins they mentioned were, avoid sexual imorrality, and idol worship.

Is it a sin? No. Should you listen to it? Probably not. Will you go to hell for listening to it? No.

For me I used to listen to all kinds of music. Until one day I realized how bad some of the lyrics were and got rid of the songs. Sure, some of the music I listen to is still "worldly" to speak, as in its not about God. But it's safer than the music I used to listen to. Though I prefer music without lyrics, this way I don't have to worry about if it will affect my thinking or not.

"More critically, the documentary is riddled with factual errors: for example, it's misleading to say Madonna was an "ex-inappropriate content star" in 1989-- the nude pictures that appeared in Penthouse and Playboy were modeled as figure studies. Furthermore, Michael Jackson was never an "all-American boy"; Metal Fatigue was the name of a compilation, not a band; and Robert Palmer the singer and Robert Palmer the journalist are two different people. The new DVD cover bills itself as "The Original Classic", which is true but not for the reasons Reel to Real might think: Hell's Bells has become a relic of the Satanic Panic, a piece of extreme propaganda that has new life as mostly harmless kitsch." For Whom Hell's Bells Toll

Rock and Roll has never led or caused me to sin. Well know hymns uses the music of bar songs. Did any of the hymns cause a person to sin?

Hello Daniel. Thanks for your reply. This is an area I had not considered whether there is a difference between art and inappropriate contentography. Perhaps someone will begin a thread on CF about it, would be an interesting read.

Overall though I think the point can be made that rock and pop stars are perhaps not the best role models.

God Bless :)
