The size of the COVID pandemic in the US has repeatedly exceeded expectations.

I would suggest one possible explanation would be relying on only the proven means of transmission whereas the disease might already be traveling in ways long suspected but not yet verified.

It is very uncool to be alarmist so I will avoid doing that but propose we change from following just the precautions passed down from government to expanding on them,

acknowledge the virus is getting ahead of us and more needs to be done,

I'm hoping together we can stop it.

[Edit]
Information just arrived in post 31 that there are older people with COVID who are symptom-less in addition to the younger symptom-less; the risk is a big one.

Yesterday I got the information that there could be 9% of the total population with COVID but no symptoms. This is getting dangerous.

At this point, the thing is going to run its course. There is nothing that anyone is doing that is stopping it from spreading, we are only slowing it down a bit. Wear a mask in public, wash your hands, don't touch your face. Those are the only steps anyone can take. And that is still not going to stop it, it will only slow it down.

These are some off-the-cuff ideas I would like some feedback on:

1. Add to the multilayered approach
If we could rely on the temperature scanners at the entrances of many stores then we would not need social distancing, but the scanners are not adequate and I suspect neither is the amount of social distancing.

Therefore I would suggest that anyone who can use the grocery pickup should do so, to reduce the risk to other customers and to the store staff.

I'm hoping together we can stop it.

The only way that is going to happen is to make sure Trump is voted out! He has encouraged people not to wear masks. He says things like he is victorious over Covid-19 and now he is immune. He doesn't care about the people, only the money that they generate.

We need to follow in Taiwan's footsteps! They have had only 550 cases total and only seven deaths.

Unfortunately, that does nothing for the asymptomatic carriers.

In NY State we managed so far to limit the spread locally even though as said, its impossible to stop completely. Yet we also know herd immunity will not work with this virus. So learning to wear masks, social distance and quarantine maybe part of our future.

Still temperature checks are not very accurate as someone is likely already sick for three to five days before their temperature rises. Instead asking if taste or smell is off seems to be a better and earlier indicator. This also shows, the longer its around, the more we know.

This is why NY is doing better, by the way, we had the worse first wave and learn a lot, and made changes....

We are at 8.7 million infected and climbing quickly. We are in a third wave.

I think we should really worry when it hits 10% of the population (around 35 to 40 million). At that point, there is a good chance that someone you know has or had it.

We need to get this under control.

NY is doing better, but now it seems as though it is hitting the rural areas of the state.

I have kids who live in Stueben County and they have seen a rise in case numbers the last month or more.

Its because of the NY Penn. boarder, its rising in Pennsylvania and many down there have to cross into Penn to work and bring it home. Its a real problem and no one yet knows the answer. Its not like people can quarantine after work for two weeks.

I admit, I use to be jealous of you folk, your farmers can cross in Penn to get their milk pasteurized, we are too far away. Now we see there are advantages to being rural and more toward the center of the state.

Even out here we had a few cases that closed schools. It wasn't many, but one case closes the school.

2. People should think seriously about whether their children should attend school.

School closure is not a fair option because those of us in the expendable part of the population need to send our children to school so we can work, but the more children in the schools the higher the risk of spread.

The big problem here is the not yet proven route of spread, of the symptom-less as many children could be, sharing and bringing the disease home unawares.

More modes of transmission will increase the likelihood of the disease spreading from below 1 per infected to over 1 per infected.

That makes sense! I didn't think about PA.

I'm in Florida now after their mom and I split back in 2008. Although, with the way housing prices are going down here, my girlfriend and I have considered after we get married moving back to Upstate, NY. She loves it up there as well as central and western PA. Had her up there back in June when I went to watch two of my daughters graduate High School.

We cannot depend upon government or a President to save us from this. If we are to reverse the trend, we, the people, must have the will to do it ourselves. And, that is the scary part because we don't have that will, leastwise not enough of us.

I am against my ex-wife down here in Florida sending our two little ones to school and offered to take them for the school year, not only for their safety but hers as well. Her immune system is messed up from a recent medication she took to help against her multiple sclerosis. She ignored it and instead would rather have the money she gets from me for child support.

We are already aware the behavior of children increases risk of spread by contact from the spread of hair lice, it is mostly among preschool and elementary school children. Expecting them to not spread COVID is something that should require evidence rather than waiting for evidence that they will spread it.

In our economy the low income people are the canaries in the coal mine, but beware the disease can also spread to the people who matter.

school reporting is not accurate, either
they're reporting fewer no. than health dept shows

Out here only one school went back full time (they lost kids for years die to attrition so they had the room) so parents already have the means to balance kids and home schooling at least for part of each week those kids were home.

This is a disaster of unknown proportions, a real actual serious problem and I hope couples reunite to look after the children and keep them out of school and for all the benefits of having two parents, maybe somebody should think about the children because you know the government and the divorce courts don't.

But child support is often a big part of the reason for divorcing in the first place and all those fancy financial arrangements do a lot to keep people apart. You have all my sympathy.

It's also terrible in England because the government is committed to keeping house prices up so basing government assistance on household income means 'throw the man out and get rich'. As I discovered even a wealthy woman gains financially by getting rid of a man if his income is under 50,000.

I hope people bury the hatchet and protect each other from COVID.
