I have had my eye on this Bible since it was released, but haven't purchased it since I am now an Episcopalian and this is a Catholic Bible. However, I am still interested in it.

What are your thoughts on it?

It's just the gospels. I think it should provide some helpful perspectives. I've always appreciated a lot of things coming from the Catholic tradition.

It is just the Gospels, but every year they will release more. Next year it's the rest of the New Testament and the year after I think the Old Testament.

Well, the translation is nothing special. You would be buying it for the commentary, and that is going to be explicitly Catholic. There are many places where that doesn't conflict at all with Anglicanism, but there are places where it would pretty heavily. Take that for what it's worth.

I appreciate the commentary from the Church Fathers and others. The art looks absolutely beautiful. The translation shouldn't be objectionable. I just ordered one to check it out.

Let me know how much of the commentary is from the Fathers and how much is of more recent vintage.

If you'd like an ESV translation with the Deuterocanonical books included, you should try the Augustine Bible (ESV-CE). It's a paperback, but well-made (Smyth sewn and lies flat). It's plain with minimal notes and references, but that's my preference with Bibles. ACNA's Anglican House publishers also has put out an ESV translation with the deuterocanonical books, but I don't have a copy yet. It's an inexpensive edition and might be worth picking up even if you have "nicer" editions, to use as a travel or bible-study bible.

According to the publishers of this work, it is NOT a Bible.

Therefore, if you get a copy, be prepared to see the book as another in a long line of books that present somebody or other's ideas concerning the history of Christianity.

Yep, I mentioned that above. Once completed it will be the entire Bible.

But whether it's what is in print now or what it will be when completed, this is something other than just a Bible translation or edition, right?

Not that I am aware of. It is supposed to be a complete Bible put out in editions every year till it's completed. Next year is supposed to be the rest of the New testament. The year after that either all of the OT or parts of it.

My read is that it's essentially a study Bible. So it is the Bible, just with a ton of Catholic commentary in it.

My understanding is that the project is more in the "premium study bible" genre, and is based on the RSV translation. Obviously the theology in the study materials will be Roman Catholic.

I dislike the whole "study bible" genre. I don't like mixing fallible, human commentary with Scripture. If you want to publish a commentary, publish a commentary. Putting fallible human commentary next to Scripture gives it undue weight and authority, in my view. Even the very best "study bibles" sometimes assert things as fact that aren't the consensus view in the target audience. And I'm not even getting into the usability problems of modern study bibles -- you almost have to use a forklift to use them nowadays, and I find the colors, pictures, callouts, and other material distracting from rather than enhancing the scriptural text.

I sometimes think the modern bible-publishing industry is just a grift invented to keep selling chumps the same book over and over again.

[EDIT] The NET Bible is an exception - I find the translator's notes to be incredibly helpful when doing bible study, even though I find the actual translation to be a bit meh.

Well then, what's this? (taken from the link provided)

The Word on Fire Bible (Volume 1): The Gospels is a groundbreaking new book introducing readers to the strange, colorful world of the Bible...
surrounding the biblical text with commentary and explanations from Bishop Robert Barron, the Church Fathers, and many of the greatest saints, mystics, and scholars throughout Christian history,..This Bible plumbs the depths of the entire tradition of Catholic Christianity....

Anyway, you asked for our thoughts, so that's something I thought worth mentioning. It's nothing to argue over.

I thought you were asking questions for answers. So I was giving answers. I wasn't arguing.

It was more a comment about the direction that the discussion seemed likely to be heading towards. It wasn't said with anyone in particular in mind. :)

Okay. I didn't have the same thought that it was headed in that direction, just that you thought I was debating with you.

Sorry! My mind is still in a child support modification hearing a couple of weeks later that lasted for almost 18 months where I had to prove every little point. Trying to break away from that is rough.

I can imagine. I'm sorry that you and others have had to go through such a horrid experience.

And then there is a similar scandal in waiting for people unlucky enough to get caught up, in old age, with court ordered guardians, etc.

Unfortunately, the majority of the population which isn't caught up in these kinds of calamities have no knowledge of them and so no corrective action ever occurs.

Surrounding the text. The whole text of the Gospels is in there. There is also a bunch of other stuff in there as well. It seems to be a combination of a study bible and the old illuminated manuscripts.
