The long rumored "Legislative Petition" response to Governor John Bel Edwards COVID restrictions has finally arrived, according to Louisiana House leadership.

This procedural move would suspend the Governor's emergency declarations, and allow the state House to set a time limit before new restrictions can be put back into place. The petition is not a bill, therefore it cannot be vetoed by the Governor.

If the Legislative Petition is held up in court, it would suspend all of the state's COVID rules and restrictions.

Seems wise in a state that's #4 for per capita cases and #5 for per capita deaths.

Meh. It's getting to the point where I can't feel any sympathy for people who are being deliberately stupid. If they don't care how many of their citizens die, why should I.

As an aside, I wonder if these red state legislatures understand that the people they're most likely killing is red ticket voters. And most likely it's the seniors, who are the most dependable red ticket voters.

IOW these decisions may be "opening up" their economies, but may also be hastening the eventual extinction of the Republican party (which is another reason I can't be too terribly upset).

It is sometimes frightening to see the lunatics running the asylum, especially when your neighbors helped elect them.

My state legislature is so worthless I would like to give them their salaries just to stay home. The Republican governor tries to run interference, but they, too, are trying to overturn COVID policies. A few have the illness--might keep them out of trouble for a few weeks.

Here in Michigan we have a different problem. While the majority of the state's citizens are Democrats or moderate Independents, the state legislature, because of gerrymandering, and the Supreme Court, because of court packing (majority judges appointed by Republican Governor, Democratic minority elected by voters) is predominantly Republican and enact policies and laws which the majority of the state's citizens often disapprove of. The Coronavirus response by the Democratic Governor was no different, with the Republican legislature and majority Republican state supreme court doing the totally expected and overturning all of the state mandates and policies meant to keep people safe and save lives.

The crass disregard of human life by the Republicans is mind boggling.

Not to mention their former governor, Rick Snyder, who poisoned the water that caused brain damage in Flint's children.
