Pope Francis backs same-sex civil unions

Pope Francis has given his most explicit support to same-sex civil unions in a move that is likely to further enrage his conservative opponents in the Catholic church.

His comments came in an interview in a documentary film, Francesco, which premiered at the Rome film festival on Wednesday.

Where do you think this is heading?

God Bless :)

I think the Pope would like to make homosexuality OK. That would be fine with the US and Europe, but there are enough traditionalists that this is not likely to continue past this Pope's tenure.

I think the Pope has just destroyed the moral credibility of the Catholic Church. Or, if he hasn't destroyed, he's certainty hurt it. I would like him to come out and directly say, yes homosexuality is a mortal sin, but this doesn't affect my political stance on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Pope Francis was described by Vatican watchers as a moderate when he was Archbishop in South America and a potential candidate for replacing John Paul II and then Pope Benedict. Apparently Vatican watchers knew him well. Truth be told, I do not believe that any of us here can predict how far the Christian community will go in future years in terms of accepting gay marriage. It could even be in 100 or 200 years that the Catholic Church could change it's teaching on the subject, though such a dramatic change might possibly result in a split in the Catholic Church. I expect that eventually some/most of the Evangelical Protestant bodies will accept gay marriage, though this may yet take another 50 or 100 years. As for the Eastern Orthodox, the Oriental Orthodox and the Fundamentalist Protestant groups, it seems unlikely that they will ever accept such a change, though as my mother has often told me, "never say never".

I wonder if some Catholics might now start looking at the EOC?

Credibility with whom? Obviously conservatives will evaluate it this way. Others will not. Apparently there's good support among Latin American Catholics. The main issue will be in Africa.

To hell. The Catholic organisation is worldly through and through. If you try to be everyone's friend, you make yourself God's enemy. And the pope is supposed to be infallible?

Anyone with a working brain can see the contradiction. The Pope is encouraging mortal sin in the secular realm. He wants this to be an accepted institution politically and if this is the case for homosexuality, why shouldn't the rest of Catholic moral teaching be thrown out and dismissed within the secular world?

Mind you, the Vatican's lack of moral credibility happened a few years ago with China. Before then it was a the sexual abuse crisis. This only continues to the trend of the Catholic Church going in the direction of anemic and spiritually powerless liberal Protestantism.

Liberals will be satisfied whenever Christian morality is being subverted so of course they will be happy. But for those of us who take the Christian moral tradition seriously and value it, why should we give any respect to the Catholic Church as an institution? I'm not even Catholic and I find Francis' compromise with secularism disheartening. I hope the next Pope will be Robert Sarah.

Why?

The Pope is only a human being. He is entitled to his own personal views. Popes come and go but, Catholicism remains.

Very true, the Pope is only a human being. Unless he attempts to change a core Catholic teaching, most Catholics should remain faithful to the Church.

Before the Rome bashing starts I would be interested in hearing what Francis actually said in context. Just saying.

I posted the link from the Guardian because usually I find them to be quite accurate and also you don't have to join to read the full article. God Bless :)

He may be granting them mercy, but not recommending homosexual union lifestyle.

I would note that the Pope did not approve same sex unions for the sacrament of marriage.

The pope is advocating that homosexuals should be treated with respect under the civil laws just like anyone else.

That's what I got from the article.

A few years ago the Scottish Episcopal Church embraced same sex unions, I think as a plan to make them seem more acceptable to the world and stop the haemorrhaging of members. Perhaps the Roman Catholic Church is going down the same route? I came from a Catholic family and I know from the extended family who are still Catholic none regularly attend Mass. From the dwindling attendances and closure of churches it seems that the RCC is moribund in this country. So, become more like the world to attract the world?

True, but many feel that his words indicate some degree of endorsement or approval of homosexual unions/acts, if only by implication. Others may disagree. At the very least, it appears that the Pope's words have caused confusion and concern for many Catholics.

First, we need to pray for our catholic brothers who are still holding the line against the culture. And to the OP the piskies in Scotland seemed to have abandoned the faith as an institution a long time ago when they elected an avowed atheist as Primus. And add to that the Episcopal Church here in the states and it’s easy to see why it’s recipe for the collapse of any church body.

That’s silly. Don’t you think mainline churches know what is popular and unpopular. Accepting gays is popular with some people, but unpopular with more. No sane person would expect it to gain members. Is it so hard to believe that mainline Christians think it is the right thing to do, and are willing to pay a price in membership? Not everyone accepts evangelicals misreading of scripture.

So advocate for two men to get married as long as it's not in church? Seems like a recipe for confusion.
