Texas social workers are criticizing a state regulatory board's decision this week to remove protections for LGBTQ clients and clients with disabilities who seek social work services.

The Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners voted unanimously Monday to change a section of its code of conduct that establishes when a social worker may refuse to serve someone. The code will no longer prohibit social workers from turning away clients on the basis of disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Gov. Greg Abbott's office recommended the change, board members said, because the code's nondiscrimination protections went beyond protections laid out in the state law that governs how and when the state may discipline social workers.

It's 1am here and I'm half asleep, nor have I read anything else about this, but could someone maybe clarify the reasoning behind the change? The article only states this, and it's clear as mud.

How can that be? That's discrimination.
It might not go far, Since social workers aren't okay with it

So, he's saying the agency shouldn't unilaterally enact a policy exceed the requirements of the law. Well, if they are extending services to one group not covered under the law, but using the same standards to reject other groups also not covered under the law, then they are actually responsible for systematic discrimination. The only real issue here is that they are discriminating against those who aren't currently politically popular.

Would seem anyone who claims to be in favor of equal rights would applaud the move unless their definition of 'equal' only hypocritically applies in certain areas.

would you be as eager to defend this if the legislature gave doctors the right to refuse to treat black people? if you are saying no then your definition of equal only hypocritically apples in certain areas

Well, posting the first frantic article screaming discrimination without getting facts or context seems to be par for the course, but that is not why the list was edited.

Social workers do not discriminate anyway; that is the heart of the profession. The purpose is to ensure social workers don't practice outside their scope of knowledge and competence and also to comply with state law.

"Darrel Spinks, executive director of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council, said that he consulted with the office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton before the rule change was made. He concluded that Abbott's opinion—"your rule needs to match what the statute is"—was correct. The change was made during a joint meeting of the council and the board"

Social Workers, like every profession have good and bad seeds. However, generally it's a profession of people who sincerely want to HELP everyone the most they can.

That being said, sometimes they realize their own weaknesses and realize that a certain client would be better served by someone else. This doesn't always fall into the line of discrimination on a destructive level. It may be a gift they give to the client, depending on their own inability to serve a certain population.

The social workers weren't complaining. No good Christian would. The Texas State Board voted, Not social workers.

I didn't say they did. Also, not all social workers are Christians.

Thank God.
Lol arent you an atheist? Why are you thanking God? (I'm just friendly teasing, no attitude intended.)

Also, what makes you say that? I can manage to do the job without judgement because I wasn't put on this earth to be better than anyone else or to judge anyone else. I have free will and so does everyone else... just the way God intended it... so I honor that.

Yes, I believe most Christians can do the job without judgement. But, one without gods has no need to balance the opprobrium of the gods with basic human kindness.
