I was reading another thread on CF just now from a woman who is pondering the question of children with her husband but she says she has alwAys had stronger desire to adopt .she says her church told her that adopting children or having tubal ligation/sterilisation is sinning against God

I have heard these opinions before from Christians but am a bit confused because I cAnnot find any scripture referring to either of these matters?

Are there any scriptures on these topics at all, have I just missed them. Am curious because I never felt led by the Lord to be a mother and if I marry when am recovered enough from my issues I was pondering sterilisation. I am not keen on idea of taking a birth control pills that may be abortificent, stopping embryos from implanting.

I cAnnot understAnd why adoption would be considered wrong biblicLy? Wasn't Esther technicAlly brought up by her uncle? Moses was adopted.

We are all adopted into the family of God.

Jesus said "Who are my mother and brothers?

I cant recall any teaching against adoption.

As to surgical sterilisation this is a good topic to discuss...

Good point there about adoption

I would say that I have alwAys regarded sterilisation as being more a medical than theological issue as long as husband or wife is on same page as regarding not having children.

To have or not have children Nd whether to have large or small family is something that should be agreed upon before deciding to marry...

What her church tells her is ... well ... up to them. The truth might differ.

Adoption is not sinful. It is, if anything, a good thing.

Sterilization and contraception are wrong. EVERY Christian group prior to 1930 would have told you that and would have provided Scripture to back it up. But that changed when the Anglican Lambeth conference made a tiny exception in 1930. And now, except for Catholic teaching and very rare Protestant groups who concur, it is just presumed that contraception is OK, sterilization is OK, deliberate childfree marriage is OK, and increasingly that abortion is OK and homosexual marriage and gender whatever is OK. Wasn't always so.

If you are interested in an articulate treatment of sexual morality, find the report of the 1920 Lambeth Conference. Not the 1930 one but the 1920 one.

I guess sterilisation and even adoption could be an ethical or moral issue in some cases but I think calling something a sin when there is no scripture to back it up seems a bit...I dunno, I just don't understAnd why you would want to add to God's commandment s. Seems like mAking life complicated

But I am not concerned with what a pastor might preach on it, I want to know where 're the scripture verses to back it up?

Saying something is wrong without scriptural backing to it seems a bit odd to me...why are more rules? We already have God's word!

I heard of a church that banned wedding rings or ladies watches that looked like bracelets because "jewellery is bad". To be fair they used loads of Bible verses but all of them were taken out of context and not written for the church age which we are in today. It was all rules for the Israelites back then. We are not under r those now except the 10 commandments and moral law

As @Carl Emerson pointed out, the Bible promotes incidences of adoption. Even Jesus was adopted...!

Medically unnecessary sterilization is not a spelled-out sin.
I believe that it falls under 1 Corinthians 10:23,

"All things are lawful for me,
but not all things are helpful;
all things are lawful for me,
but not all things edify."

IOW, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that it is a good or healthy idea to do so...

(Smoking tobacco is not forbidden in the Bible, but that turned out to be a really bad idea.)

I knew a blind couple (husband also had a kind of muscle wasting disease that eventually killed him) and because of their disabilities they both decided not to have children. But they had a lovely Christ centred marriage so I cannot see what is wrong with that?

I don't think adoption is a sin. I was adopted because it was virtually impossible for me to be looked after by my birth parents. If adoption was prohibited then I literally would have been put out on the street.

True it the difference is that while there is no " thou shalt not smoke" in the Bible there are other verses about gOing care of our temples and being sober minded, etc

Those are indirect, even oblique, objections.
(And they would apply to medically unnecessary sterilization, too.)

am glad you were Ble to be adopted then

for me I am unable to raise a child due to my disabilities and last childhood trauma of a particulArly severe kind. People think "can't hAve children" means infertile But when I see verses in the bible about God honouring and encouraging barren women, they speak to my heart and am sure God classes me as "barren" rather thAn choosing to be childfree by choice...I alwAys tell People when they ask me, I say "I can't have kids". It doesn't feel like am telling a lie when I say it. It feels.real

Ok but isn't sterilisation a form of family planning? Or is only naturAl family planning like rhythm method endorsed in Bible?

It has to be a matter of what Jesus requires of the individual.

While the command is there to go forth and multiply - there are cases in which sterilisation can save your life.

Yes it would in my case probably. And for many women.

wasn't the command to go forth and multiply given to Adam and eve and Noah though?

I mean the world's population is fine right now. We used to have fewer people and planet survived just fine.
