Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., introduced legislation last week to establish federal standards regarding the counting of ballots, ahead of the upcoming presidential election between Democratic nominee Joe Biden and President Trump.

The Verifiable, Orderly, & Timely Election Results (VOTER) Act would create standards for various vote-by-mail systems that exist across the country and would require all eligible ballots to be counted and reported within 24 hours after polls close on Election Day, according to a press release from Scott's office.

If the bill became law, it would require voting precincts to report the total number of in-person and mail-in ballots they received -- one hour after polls close -- to identify "the total universe of votes to be counted in the election."

Mail-in ballots must be requested at least 21 days before a federal election and would have to be returned and received by the time polls close on Election Day, if the measure passed.

The bill would also prohibit the possession of another person’s mail-in ballot, with exceptions for certain family members and caregivers.

Whilst at the same time gutting the postal service meant to deliver votes on time.

Right, like that is possible with the current post office. Just another excuse to limit votes.

How funny for someone as dishonest as Rick Scott trying to insure the integrity of the vote.

He is Trump lite. As governor of Florida he mandated drug tests for people on welfare and any kind of government assistance. The tests were purchased from a company he used to own, which was put into his wife's name when he became governor. The tests cost Florida many millions of dollars, and since almost all were negative, hardly saved the state of Florida a dime--but certainly enriched Scott and his wife, the on-paper president of the company.

So Rick Scott is worried about integrity? ROFL.

The problem with this voter suppression scheme is that a number of states have laws that don't allow them to begin counting absentee or mail in votes until Election Day. If their laws don't permit them to begin the process until Election Day, how can they possibly finish by Scott's arbitrary deadline? And states have the power to manage their own elections.

But this is just a stupid distraction to cast doubt on an election that will no doubt be the equivalent of people casting off their chains and saying, "We're mad as hel* and we're not going to take it anymore!" The House will never pass it. The House knows the constraints that state laws have put on vote counting, and that Scott's voter suppression bill would wind up with the will of the people being denied.

You could actually go vote... like we have for some 200 years. It is possible. Or get your ballot on time. It's no secret it happens in about a month... might want to get it like now....

The pandemic is not a "hoax." There are 209,000 people in their graves proving it is not a hoax.

There are medically vulnerable and elderly people for whom in-person voting might be inadvisable.

I am voting early. Every time I drive by my nearby polling place I'll look for an empty parking lot, and when I see it, I'll vote. I trust DeJoy's postal service as much as I trust Trump (not at all).

Everyone who can should vote early, especially if they live in crowded cities where red states try to suppress votes by not providing enough equipment. Are they going to change their minds? I knew I would be voting against Trump on January 21, 2017.

Some states have long early voting periods. Ours is two weeks, which I think is adequate, but the state across the river only has two days of early voting before Election Day, and I think that's not enough.

I think NOV 3 will be just like Y2K … all the talks , all the concern , all the prep but on that day things will go well and by end of Nov 3 America will elect a new president.

I have been watching the few States started early voting .. those who are scared of another 4 years of Trump administration .. they are standing in line for hours to vote already..

I think democrat who wants Trump out of office .. they all will vote early or send their mail-in-vote very, very early. On the other hand Republican / trump supporter will mostly vote in-person.

Don't forget the fact that before he entered politics, he once held the title of CEO of the Defendant in the Largest Fraud Settlement in History.

The issue isn't just getting the ballot on time; it's also getting the ballot back to the counters in time. The obvious flaw in Scott's plan is that there's no way for voters to predict how long it will take the ballots to get back to the polls, so there's no way for them to know when to postmark the ballots. His plan is either insidious and disingenuous or absolutely moronic.

Does he propose any new funding to accomplish this goal?

In some states voting has already started. In more states it will start here in a couple of weeks. I know in GA ( my home state), for example our early voting ( in person) by mail has already started) will begin Oct 12th and go until close of business the Friday before election day ( including at least one statewide Saturday vote option that means we have over 120 hours to vote in person early. If you cannot vote in that time you do not want to vote badly enough.

States rights! Except when you don't like them, obviously. More blatant, cowardly hypocrisy from the right.
This is a federal office you could argue state's rights for a STATE office .

so which is it? If I am understanding your post correctly it would imply that the Trump supporters would be the ones more likely to stand in line for several hours.

You could even drop it in a ballot box if you did not want to get out ( instead f mailing it in you still would not have to vote in person.

My state is vote by mail. There are ways around the post office, but that may not help the people that like waiting until the last minute to do their ballot and then just put it in the mail.

It is just a way to cut out those people, and also making the assumption that they are voting Democrat.
