The Call of Joshua

Joshua received his call from God to lead the Children of Israel into the Promised Land,after the death of Moses (Joshua 1:1-2)

Joshua is promised success. 'Every place that the soles of your feet will tread,I have given you',as I said to Moses' (Joshua 1:3)

'No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses so I will be with you. I will never leave you or forsake you' (Joshua 1:5)

'Be bold! Be strong! For the LORD your God is with you..'

Wondered how much Joshua remaining in the tent of meeting played in his call.

"And the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Moses returned to the camp, but his minister Joshua son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the [temporary prayer] tent." Exo 33:11

We already know why they went there "Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the Lord went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp." v 7

It was open to "every one" but Joshua went to that tent and remained.

Joshua was the minister of Moses. He ministered to the needs of Moses. This was a good training ground for his future ministry.

'Be strong and of good courage,for to this people,you shall divide as an inheritance the land to which I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous,that you may observe to do according to all the law,which Moses,my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or the left that you may prosper wherever you go' (Joshua 1:6-7)

'The Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth,but you shall meditate on it day and night,that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it,for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success' (Joshua 1:8)

Joshua prepared the Israelites to cross the River Jordan after three days and to go in to possess the land promised.

'Have not I commanded you,be strong and of good courage? Be not afraid,nor be dismayed,for your LORD God is with you,wherever you go' (Joshua 1:9)

'Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people,saying',(Joshua 1:10)

'Go through the camp and tell the people,'Get your supplies ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here,to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own' (Joshua 1:11)

'But to the Reubenites,the Hadites and the half-tribe of Manesseh,Joshua said..' (Joshua 1:12)

Remember the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you. The LORD your God is giving you rest and has granted you this land' (Joshua 1:13)

'Your wives,your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan,but all your fighting men,fully armed,must cross over ahead of your brothers. You are to help your brothers until the LORD gives them rest,as He has done for you and until they too have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them. After that you may go back and occupy your own land,which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you east of the Jordan towards the sunrise' (Joshua 1:14-15)

'Then they answered Joshua,'Whatever You have commanded us we will do and wherever You send us we will go' (Joshua 1:16)
