Did I make a promise not to watch movies anymore?

For a long time I felt convicted that watching movies are wrong. The main reason I think movies are wrong is because they always take God’s name in vain, even in kids movies. I also think nudity and sex scenes are wrong. So one day I decided to ask forgiveness for watching movies. Now I feel like I’ve made a promise not to watch movies anymore. It’s been a half year since then and occasionally I did watch a movie. I feel like it’s impossible to never watch a movie anymore for the rest of my life. But if I watch a movie I feel convicted and sinful.
What do I have to do?

It is not easy to leave something for the Lord, at first we always get the desert, and just like the Jews we often want to go back to Egypt. It is about pressing on and breaking free completely and seeing for ourselves what is good about it, or not of course.

We decided, 24 years ago that TV was taking ungodly influences into our home, so we did away with it and have never been sorry. Lately we are watching some videos, mainly kids videos, for the grand kids, a selected few.

Honest we were greatly blessed making this move for God and for our selves. Our children learned to play and use their imagination without constantly arguing about the TV shows, and we were no longer influenced by the news media, for we did away with the newspaper as well. In those days the web was still in its infancy, and so were computers. We learned to think for ourselves and lost a great deal of anxiety and stress brought on by worrying about world events.

Learn to spend time with the Lord, read books by the great Christians, Billy Graham, Corrie ten Boom, Max Lucardo and others. Centre your mind on the path of life. Slowly but surely you will grow in wisdom and closer to the Lord.

Yep, I agree. It's very depressing...just another illustration of how the world is getting more and more ungodly, and at an increasing rate, as time goes on.

I've stopped watching most movies and all serials. I generally use YouTube these days. I've subscribed to some sailing and motorcycling channels, and there's a plethora of dogs and cats being funny videos on it. Some really good music on it too, Christian, Instrumentals.... and no bad language or sex scenes. Luv it!

If I watch it, it pollutes my mind my heart and my soul.

There many, many movies out there which are very good which do NOT have the things which you claim are in ALL movies. They are not easy to find, though. When my wife and I choose one we are very careful and read about them first.Theses days "R" usually means you will find what we should not watch but NOT always.

Of course, you must be willing to have the Christian perspective of what is a good movie to watch. Maybe all of the movies you watch ARE bad because you are looking in the wrong places. If this is the issue then the problem would not be the movies but what is motivating you to watch such movies. Right? It is hard sometimes to turn your back on a movie which has a very alluring title, for me it is in the Sci-Fi or Action/Adventure realm, but the description, or actor list, or something else gives the diappointing clue that this movie is one to pass up. There is one actor I know of NEVER to watch, Gene Hackman. He might be a good actor but his mouth is full of all kinds of rot and filth. Anything having to do with a romantic theme would seem that it is going to be full of expository sex scenes but not so: "Must Love Dogs" or "Sleepless in Seattle" or "Our Souls at Night" w/ senior citizens Robert Redford and Jane Fonda and the dynamic drama/slight romance with Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen and Madeline Carroll, "The Magic of Belle Isle" (this one walks the line in a few places as we are dealing with a recovering alcoholic who has a couple of "episodes" but due to the theme story and human compassion intent and super-dynamic acting(another one in this category is, "The Deep End of the Ocean" (very INTENSE and heart-wrenching and hard to watch at times but a dynamic story of a magnitude of forgiveness being worked out in every primary actor's life toward others and self-Michelle Pfeiffer, Treat Williams, Ryan Merriman, Jonathon Jackson), we did not abort. "Mr. Holland's Opus", "The Horse Whisperer", crossing over borderline (a few intense, vile outbursts by Will) -"Good Will Hunting"-Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck, "A Beautiful Mind"-Russell Crowe & a whole lineup of excellent actors, the "Wild at Heart" series on Roku, "Cast Away", "Searching for Bobby Fischer", "The Finest Hours", "The Perfect Storm", ...... (If interested in more I have more to share.) My wife and I both come from work environments or backgrounds where as Christians we have had to tolerate hearing the burning, body wrenching experience of hearing the Lord's name taken in vain, so if it is done just few times during a couple of hours of a dynamic human interest or other movie we are able to tolerate (which by NO means is accept, tolerate means you do NOT approve)

By your line of reasoning one could say that ALL grocery stores are bad or evil or that the internet is all bad and evil. But the evil would not be necessarily in either one of them, BUT in one's intent to always look for bad or evil things in those places.

As the years pass in our Christian life, growth, and development we become more and more aware of how much of an alien we really are here in this world and that our first and primary citizenship is NOT anywhere on planet earth, ESPECIALLY any where close to the "Hollywood Ideologies" for the overwhelming majority of it productions. It becomes easier to be exposed to some things and due to defaults built up over time they have no influence or are tolerable for a higher understanding of spiritual matters whereas a less mature Christian might watch and have it influence them. Some Christians may never escape the perceived need to assimilate the world or Hollywood.
