We’ve never backed a presidential candidate in our 175-year history—until now

Scientific American has never endorsed a presidential candidate in its 175-year history. This year we are compelled to do so. We do not do this lightly.

The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science.

This may be one of the bigger "snoozes" of an issue that the Biden campaign has come up with lately.

"Climate change" cannot explain everything that's wrong in the world and at once, but that is what the people proclaiming this stuff want everyone to believe.

It's hot in Arizona (imagine that!) but it's cold THIS WEEK in the Great Lakes area and both are caused by melting icecaps or something. At once.

But the most absurd part of the claim is that they are "science believers" and other people are "science deniers."

"Science believers" who deny that a child is a child a moment before he leaves the birth canal completely. What kind of "science" is that? Or that people are either male or female according to how they feel mentally and emotionally even if the genes they were born with say that opposite. Some "science" that is.

Everyone has a right to their opinion. Everyone has a right to endorse whom they please.

Just because this is the "first time" they've gotten involved in politics doesn't make them right in their assessment.

All it means it that they have voiced their opinion - for the first time.

Frankly - to voice MY opinion - I don't want to vote for either man. Not my "first time" to say that, and it won't be my last.

Unfortunately, this will probably convince some conservatives to back trump.

For whatever reason, facts, evidence, science, logic, and reason itself seem to be anathema to a lot of right-wing Americans.

I blame creationism.

As a right wing Christian who taught science - physical science, biology, and earth science - for 32 years, I resent that.

It is strange how the US seems to provide such fertile ground for the growth of strange ideas though. Things like flat-earthism and the readiness with which bizarre stories like the whole pizzagate thing are believed does naturally make people think it might have something to do with the education system, and, if this site is anything to go by, the strangest of strange ideas are associated with the conservative right. Maybe it isn’t about education, but there has to be some reason why large numbers of people in a developed country like the US are unable to assess information effectively. What other reasons might there be for it?

I didn't know that people believed in a flat earth until I became a member of internet forums. AND those I see that purport to believe in a flat-earth have tended to be non-believers trolling amongst Christians. I've never known a true flat-earth believer.

There are some strange ideas amongst people. I have to correct people all the time on Facebook quite a bit. People seem to believe what they are told without researching the truth.

But that isn't limited to Christians.

True, but it does seem that conspiracy theories and the like thrive in right-wing Christian circles at least as much as in any other group there might be. I’m curious as to why that might be more than anything, I’m sure there are probably a number of reasons for it.

Then, with all due respect, you're not looking hard enough. Dig through the Conspiracy Theory forum a little bit, you'll find a fair number of flat earthers. I can't prove they're not just pretending, mind you, but if they are, they're going to absurd lengths.

I don't either. I would have voted for any of the other 2016 Republican candidates....and I am not even Republican

It concerns me that these two are what the electorate came up with.

You have OD'ed on his Kool-Aid.
I am not asking you to vote for Biden. But to look objectively at Trump.

Republicans could have impeached Trump 2 years ago--and have a REPUBLICAN in office.
Right, but none of them have the courage, except Romney.

All sorts of people have done that here and explained their reasoning, only to be told that it's not good enough since they didn't reach the same conclusion as the people urging them to look at the matter "objectively."
