Not Proud Of My Heritage

I hope my thread wont be sensitive or controversial. But I need to vent. Besides the fact I fear of going to hell, I have this on my mind. I felt this way for years but now things are getting worse in the world now thanks to the media and government. I'm feeling more ashamed and less proud of my heritage (Italian). It literally hurts me when people call them racists, mafias, bringing up what Columbus did, and of what the Roman Empire did. I'm starting to wish that I was a different nationality. Now I'm afraid to tell people what my background is bc I fear they will judge me. Does anyone here feel the same way? Or had felt the same way? Again I don't mean to have this topic come as offensive. If so, I will ask the MOD to remove it

Don't buy into a bigoted mindset that you are responsible for what someone else did.

We have no control over where we come from; but we can make choices that affect where we're going.

I'm surprised to read that a number of people have made accusations to you because of the Romans, for goodness sake! My impression, by the way, is that most Americans do not think ill of either the Italians or the Romans.

But yes, if saying you're "American" instead is what you'd like to do, go ahead.

While Americans tend so say that they're Irish or of German descent, or Italian etc. etc. because we're a nation of immigrants, there are other people who think it is about time we start calling ourselves Americans instead and being proud of it.

I'm African-American ... and I don't know of any lack of appreciation for Italians. Hardly anybody recognizes Columbus as Italian ... or the Romans.

What we know of Italians is dark-haired, swarthy, passionate people ... with great food.
