'For neither did His brethren believe in Him' John 7:5

JESUS, BROTHERS OF The siblings of Jesus represented in the New Testament and beyond. The nature of their kinship relation to Jesus is a controversial topic.

Jesus’ Siblings in the New Testament
Several passages in the Gospels contain references to Jesus’ siblings (primarily His brothers). His purported siblings also are attributed with authoring both canonical and non-canonical letters.

• Mark 3:21, 31–35 describes the efforts of Jesus’ family to remove Jesus from a crowd, though it doesn’t name these family members (see also Matt 12:46–50; Luke 8:19–21; Meier, “Brothers,” 8–15).
• John 2:12; 7:1–9; and Acts 1:14 contain references to Jesus’ siblings.
• In Mark 6:3, the crowd at Nazareth associates Jesus with His family, mentioning sisters and naming James, Joses, Judas, and Simon as His brothers (see also Matt 13:55–56). However, in Mark 15:40, “James the younger” and Joses might be attributed to another Mary.
• Paul refers to “the brothers of the Lord” in 1 Cor 9:5 and identifies James as “the Lord’s brother” in Gal 1:19.

The New Testament letters of James and Jude are attributed to brothers of Jesus. James names himself in the salutation of the letter (Jas 1:1), but he does not identify himself as Jesus’ brother. Jude identifies himself as the brother of James (Jude 1:1).

'For neither did His brethren believe in Him' John 7:5
John 7:5 was not written as a testimony about their state after their death, so we cannot conclude that they did not believe later. They did not believe in the context of John 7.

We know that James, the brother of Jesus, was one of the leaders of the first church.

Unlike Mary and Joseph, why did Jesus brethren not believe in him while He was alive and teaching. They were not there to even support their mother as their brother went through the agony of the cross as such Jesus asked one of His disciples to take care of His mother and she began to live with him afterwards John 19:26-27

'For neither did His brethren believe in Him' John 7:5
Acts 1:14
All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

I've always found this question interesting or at least wondering about them.We do know this what Jesus said, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. So that would mean being too familiar or the natural mind tends to not accept a relative can be anything better than they.

Do you have siblings? It's normal to think that your siblings are "the same as you", nothing super-special. Would you believe your brother if he told you that he's the son of God? Or would you think that he's either mentally ill or - if there are no other signs of a mental illness - that he is horribly conceited?

One would expect that Mary and Joseph did not keep what happened with Jesus secret, but told their children as they were growing up.

Neither Mary nor his brothers probably expected so much - that He will call himself God, forgive sins etc. They probably expected something like John the baptist - just some prophet or maybe a Jewish king.

Mary and Joseph were well aware of who Jesus was right from conception, Mary was told by an Angel, Joseph was also told in a dream, both were told again by Simon, Anna, the three wise men, Jesus also grew in wisdom; teaching in a Synagogue at 12. They knew. It's unlikely they didn't tell his siblings about Him as they grew.

True, but if my mother told me that she received my brother as a virgin I'd give her a skeptical look. It's one thing to be told something and another thing to be convinced by it. There is always rivalry between brothers, I'm not surprised they didn't believe it until they saw the risen Jesus.

[15] He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" [16] Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." [17] Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
